Dr. Glenn McBride
M
ost everyone in town has
heard of him–has a child,
grandchild or a friend delivered by him.
And many have received extraordinary
care from him. Dr. Glenn McBride is a
great physician and a much loved resident
at Franke Tobey Jones.
Pratt building, Dr. McBride continues with
“business as usual”–exercise, bingo and
other activities. He is the ultimate “Energizer Bunny” one we can’t imagine ever
slowing down. He chooses to treat each
day as a gift–a wonderful example to us all.
Dr. McBride was a young family
practitioner with a major surgery
rating when WWII broke out. As a
patriotic American, he closed his
medical practice and joined the Air
Force, ready to serve overseas.
However, the military chose to keep
him on home soil providing extraordinary care to his countrymen for four
years. For the next 40 years, he
cared for his adoring patients in
Tacoma, healing the sick and injured, Dr. McBride and his daughters Betsy, Molly and Barbara.
and delivering more than 3,500
babies. (I am one of his special deliveries, Dr. McBride was married to the love of his
and proud of it.) He gained the trust and

medical community.
His two books - It’s Lighter Ahead, and
Dr. McBride served for many years as a
Board member at Franke Tobey Jones.
We were so happy when he became a
resident in 2005. He brings much energy,
enthusiasm and quite often laughter to the
atmosphere. Always gracing everyone
with a smile, his jovial demeanor is
contagious. While living in the Tobey
Jones building, Dr. McBride worked out
on exercise equipment a minimum of three
times a day, participated in bridge games,
bingo, and most every activity offered.
His presence at “Happy Talk” was
always entertaining. Now in the Lillian
Curbside Diagnoses and Some Second
Opinions, chronicle his life and were
written as a gift to his family. These books
are filled with stories that are both amusing
and moving. Dr. McBride is an amazing
writer, and personally typed each and
every page on his manual typewriter, with
no spell-check.
“My career and my family have been a
wonderful experience for me. I don’t have
any regrets” said the good doctor. His
presence at Franke Tobey Jones is indeed
a wonderful experience for all of us.

The Franke Tobey Jones
Wellness Program
continues to grow with
many full classes and much
fun. Classes include
strength training, toning and balance, Tai Chi, Yoga, and
Zumba. We also have weekly walks, both on and off
campus. One of our more active groups of walkers
explores Point Defiance Park each week.
Wellness
Tips
We have added two new aerobics classes this year. The
more challenging class attracts our more “fit” residents,
community participants and staff. Our low-tempo class is
designed to be friendly for those who use assistive devices
such as walkers or canes, and can be done either seated
or standing. Come join us!

Annual Report 2009
Finance Committee 2009 Annual Report
uring the 2009 fiscal year, the Finance Committee
attended to all matters of financial oversight and
policy review, including review of bond fund
compliance, investments, and budgets. All Committee
actions were brought to the full Board for approval.
FTJ’s asset managers held discussions with the Committee
and reviewed their investment strategies. Operating and
capital budgets were approved for 2010, including necessary cost-containment measures.
The 2009 audit was reviewed, again showing good
controls and procedures, with no management exceptions
to report. The finance team’s compliance with standard
accounting procedures was noted.
IRS regulations have changed Form 990 reporting requirements for non-profit corporations, requiring extensive
narrative and accounting work by staff.
The Committee wishes to thank the Finance team, Board
members, and our Interim President/CEO, Judy Dunn, for
their excellent work.
Committee members: Sue Brabham, Rick Carr, Dave
Edwards, Anne Katterhagen, Mark Patterson, Jeff
Watts, Janet Moore Werner, Robert Whitney, MD, Chair,
and B.Z. Zenczak.
Staff - Judy Dunn, Judy Hawkins, and Lesley Garban.

A
s the new Director of the Pt. Defiance~Ruston
Senior Center, I feel privileged to be working in
an environment where so many lives are positively
impacted. The Center serves an important role in our
community, particularly for those who have no family in the
vicinity and have difficulty getting around. It is a gathering
place for old friends and a place to make new friends. And
for some of our seniors, it is a place they depend on five
days a week.

‘Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.’
The Pt. Defiance~Ruston Senior Center not only serves
local seniors, but it reaches out to the community providing

offers is a perfect example of this, attracting seniors from
Pierce County and the surrounding counties.

Legacy Circle Bequest
I
n March of this year, Franke Tobey Jones received
a gift of $300,000 from the estate of Edward
Hudson. Mr. Hudson joined
our Legacy Circle in 2006, and
talked with me repeatedly about
how pleased he was to be a resident
at Franke Tobey Jones, along with
his daughter, Carolyn Hudson. Ed
moved into the Garden Apartments
in 2005 and enjoyed learning how
to use the computer, soon becoming
an avid computer reader.
Ed lived in the Puget Sound area for
almost all of his life, becoming a
successful business owner of
Peerless Laundry, providing services
to Fort Lewis and McChord Field.
He was very active in the Tacoma

Rotary Club of Tacoma #8, Elks, Chamber of Commerce,
United Way, Tacoma Utility Board,
Northwest Laundry Association, and
the Air Force and Army Associations,
to name a few. He was also an elder at
Immanuel Presbyterian Church, a
Masonic Lodge member, and a member of the Tacoma Golf and Country
Club.
Ed passed away here at Franke Tobey
Jones in June of 2008. We are extremely grateful to Ed for his generosity
to Franke Tobey Jones and his love of
our community. We will be working
with Ed’s family to identify the best
designation for his wonderful and
thoughtful gift.

Legacy Circle Bequest
I
n March of this year, Franke Tobey Jones received
a gift of $300,000 from the estate of Edward
Hudson. Mr. Hudson joined
our Legacy Circle in 2006, and
talked with me repeatedly about
how pleased he was to be a resident
at Franke Tobey Jones, along with
his daughter, Carolyn Hudson. Ed
moved into the Garden Apartments
in 2005 and enjoyed learning how
to use the computer, soon becoming
an avid computer reader.
Ed lived in the Puget Sound area for
almost all of his life, becoming a
successful business owner of
Peerless Laundry, providing services
to Fort Lewis and McChord Field.
He was very active in the Tacoma

Ed passed away here at Franke Tobey

attended to all matters of financial oversight and
policy review, including review of bond fund
compliance, investments, and budgets.

The Pt. Defiance~Ruston Senior Center not only serves
local seniors, but it reaches out to the community providing
services to everyone. The free tax preparation that AARP
offers is a perfect example of this, attracting seniors from
Pierce County and the surrounding counties.

Dr. Glenn McBride
M
ost everyone in town has
heard of him–has a child,
grandchild or a friend delivered by him.
And many have received extraordinary
care from him. Dr. Glenn McBride is a
great physician and a much loved resident
at Franke Tobey Jones.
Pratt building, Dr. McBride continues with
“business as usual”–exercise, bingo and
other activities. He is the ultimate “Energizer Bunny” one we can’t imagine ever
slowing down. He chooses to treat each
day as a gift–a wonderful example to us all.
Dr. McBride was a young family
practitioner with a major surgery
rating when WWII broke out. As a
patriotic American, he closed his
medical practice and joined the Air
Force, ready to serve overseas.
However, the military chose to keep
him on home soil providing extraordinary care to his countrymen for four
years. For the next 40 years, he
cared for his adoring patients in
Tacoma, healing the sick and injured, Dr. McBride and his daughters Betsy, Molly and Barbara.
and delivering more than 3,500
babies. (I am one of his special deliveries, Dr. McBride was married to the love of his

medical community.
His two books - It’s Lighter Ahead, and
Dr. McBride served for many years as a
Board member at Franke Tobey Jones.
We were so happy when he became a
resident in 2005. He brings much energy,
enthusiasm and quite often laughter to the
atmosphere. Always gracing everyone
with a smile, his jovial demeanor is
contagious. While living in the Tobey
Jones building, Dr. McBride worked out
on exercise equipment a minimum of three
times a day, participated in bridge games,
bingo, and most every activity offered.
His presence at “Happy Talk” was
always entertaining. Now in the Lillian
Curbside Diagnoses and Some Second
Opinions, chronicle his life and were
written as a gift to his family. These books
are filled with stories that are both amusing
and moving. Dr. McBride is an amazing
writer, and personally typed each and
every page on his manual typewriter, with
no spell-check.
“My career and my family have been a
wonderful experience for me. I don’t have
any regrets” said the good doctor. His
presence at Franke Tobey Jones is indeed
a wonderful experience for all of us.

We have added two new aerobics classes this year. The
