Betty wanted
to honor her friend by helping employees with their
college education, and she did it in a big way. She
believes in philanthropy and has made similar gifts
throughout her life to causes dear to her heart. Betty
also appreciates the tax benefit in making donations.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE.

a celebration of life ceremony on Saturday January
23 at 3pm in the Lillian Pratt Parlor at Franke Tobey
Jones. Invitations will be mailed soon. If you have not
made a memorial or honorarium gift, you will not be
excluded. Everyone is welcome. Please join us as we

are you listening?
Do you hear what I hear? Many people
do not so we made some important changes at
Franke Tobey Jones to help those with hearing
impairments. Several Induction Loop Systems were
installed in our Lillian Pratt Parlor and Dining
Room, Health Care Dining Room and Activity
Terrace, and the Tobey Jones Parlor, Solarium and
Dining Room. An Induction Loop, also known as
a Hearing Loop or T-Loop, is an assistive listening
system that provides access to facilities for those
with hearing issues. The system takes a sound
source and transfers it directly to a hearing aid
without the nuisance of background noise. This
new system now enables our residents and visitors
to hear much more, enriching their lives at Franke
Tobey Jones. The presence of an Induction Loop is
indicated by the use of the sign above. Come check

celebrated another successful year. As
2015 draws to a close, here are a few of
our accomplishments:
Planning for the future
Master planning is well underway. We
rekindled the efforts in 2014 with a
market study and the engagement of
Marathon Development, a real estate
development company specializing in
senior housing. Together we have taken
a number of important steps toward
planning for the future of our campus,
including working with the City of
Tacoma and retaining an architectural
firm to begin exploring the repositioning
of our campus.
Financial Security
Financial security is a priority of the
Board of Directors and Franke Tobey
Jones management team. 2015 has proven
to be a strong year thanks to higher than
budgeted occupancy and the exploration
of cost savings. Through our master
planning efforts, FTJ looks to continue
to grow our financial strength to further
carry out and expand our mission.
Welcoming New Faces
Heidi White joined the FTJ team in
2015 as our Director of Life Enrichment.
Thanks to her background and
experience in therapeutic recreation,
activities and programming have seen
a boost under her leadership. She has
instituted new regular activities in Lillian
Pratt, Our Place and the Health Center.
Heidi’s work plan will continue to expand
and enhance this area for the benefit of
all our residents as well as those 55+ who
participate in our Wellness program or
Senior University.
Kelly Merry, whom you will read more
about in this issue, also joined us this
year as our Director of Philanthropy.
Kelly comes to us with many years of
experience in senior communities. Her
role with FTJ is to continue to fund
our community service and internal
programs and to help make our
expansion of services vision a reality.
As we map out plans for 2016, we remain
ambitious and far from idle. I look
forward to another busy and productive
year for Franke Tobey Jones!

Welcome Kelly Merry!
K
elly Merry joined Franke Tobey Jones as its
new Director of Philanthropy in September.
Kelly comes to FTJ with over 12 years of
experience as an advancement professional. Nine of
those years have been in leadership roles with not-forprofit continuing care retirement communities. She
holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor
in Information Systems and Statistical Analysis from
the Schreyer Honors College at
Pennsylvania State University and
earned a certificate in Fundraising
Management from the University of
Washington.
Office of Philanthropy
With Kelly’s leadership comes a new
name for her area of responsibility.
Formally the Office of Fund
Development, Kelly believes the new
name of her department – the Office
of Philanthropy – will better reflect
the envisioned department culture.
While the previous term “fund
development” aptly describes the
fundraising function of the team,
Kelly’s perspective is that a name should represent the
deeper purpose of her team’s work. It’s not just about
raising money. For all logophiles out there; you may
be interested to know that the word “philanthropy”
is from Greek philanthrōpos, from philein ‘to love’
+ anthrōpos ‘human being.’ Philanthropy is about
loving other human beings. Kelly believes her
role is to help facilitate anyone’s desire to care for
others through their own act of generosity. While
traditionally and practically this comes about through
managing financial support, it can also take the form

of managing volunteers or ideas that influence how
we improve the way we carry out our FTJ mission to
enrich and extend the quality of life for seniors in our
community. Kelly is delighted to have joined longtime team member Terri Vickery, Assistant Director of
Philanthropy and Volunteer Coordinator, in the Office
of Philanthropy & Volunteers located in the “A” level
of the Garden Apartments. “There is a strong sense
of community at FTJ and
a spirit of generosity in
the air. I look forward to
helping that spirit continue
to flourish to benefit
residents, team members
and other seniors in
Tacoma,” said Kelly.
Kelly will oversee FTJ’s
Annual Fund, the
Legacy Circle, Tribute
and Memorial Funds,
grants, Franke’s Follies
and other select special
events, corporate and
foundation relations, and fundraising for the Point
Defiance~Ruston Senior Center, Senior University, and
the Wellness Program. In addition, she will manage
the distribution of dollars that benefit FTJ’s charitable
programs. Kelly lives in Gig Harbor with her husband
and two children. Prior to moving to Gig Harbor, Kelly
and her family lived in the Proctor neighborhood
of Tacoma for eight years. She is a member of the
Association of Fundraising Professionals, Washington
Planned Giving Council, Leading Age, and the Phi
Beta Kappa Society.

“A Night in Oz”
Unforgettable
Franke’s Follies “A Night in Oz” was a smashing
success this year. Our 10th annual party and auction
helped raise $60,000 for Franke Tobey Jones’
community programs; Wellness, Senior University
and our Point Defiance~Ruston Senior Center.
Almost 100 guests were greeted by Dorothy, the Tin
Man and their friends as they entered the M.J. Wicks
Family Wellness Center. The evening was filled with
laughter, fun and an outpouring of generosity. Thank

FTJ Senior Art Show a Success

fter a year hiatus in 2014, the Franke Tobey
Jones Senior Art Show came back stronger
than ever. Over the weekend of October 23 – 26, we
displayed fantastic art and encouraged creativity from
our arts community in the process. All art displayed
was created by artists “55 and better” within the last
two years.
Over 200 pieces of two-dimensional art, threedimensional art and photography were submitted for
jury consideration. Local artists on our jury; Becky
Frehse, Patsy Surh O’Connell and Dane Gregory
Meyer, rose to the challenge of evaluating all the
entries. In the end, just over 70 pieces were accepted –
the perfect amount to fill up our multi-purpose space
in the M.J. Wicks Family Wellness Center.
On Thursday, October 23, FTJ hosted a public
reception to open the show.
At the reception, “Presence”
by Michelle Friars was
awarded Best of Show. First
place in two-dimensional
art went to Janyce Sukow for
“Abandoned.” First place in
three-dimensional art was
awarded to Kathy Thurston’s
“Raven Steals the Sun.” First
place in photography was
awarded to Dan Suckow for
“Conflict.” Additional pieces
won second and third places
in their respective categories
along with several honorable
mentions.
“Presence” by Michelle Friars won Best in Show
and People’s Choice.
We are excited to announce that the
show continues at the Tacoma Art
Museum. Artists showing at FTJ were
invited to show their art at TAM from
November 11 to December 7.
We sincerely thank our art show
curator, Dayton Knipher, without
whom the show would have been
impossible to put on. A special thank

Point Defiance~Ruston Senior Center
S
enior Center programming has
evolved over the past five years and it
will continue to evolve
as we move into the new
year. I am researching
more services to offer,
such as the retired
barber who will be doing
haircuts on the first
and third Fridays of the
month. Jim Lince owned
his own barbershop in
Gig Harbor, but like
Barber Jim Lince
many retirees, he does
not want to totally retire so he will be joining the
Senior Center family. He and his wife love to dance so
you may see them in the line dancing class, too. If you
do, introduce yourself and make them feel at home.
Our Projects for a Cause continues to be a focal point
for those who want to do community service, but are
unable to get out to volunteer. Just recently, our project
was the Nativity House. We collected men’s clothing

for homeless men who use Nativity House. This day
shelter is operated by Catholic Community Services.
They offer meals, overnight shelter, mental health and
chemical dependence assessments and referrals, as
well as rapid re-housing access to mainstream public
benefits, such as Medicare and SSI, and job training.
Next year we are losing a few of our events that have
typically happened during the summer, but we are
replacing them with what we think will be a huge
hit, an Oktoberfest. I found it rather interesting that
in 2016, Oktoberfest starts in September, thus this
is when it will be offered at the Pt. Defiance~Ruston
Senior Center. We will still have the all-time favorites:
Pasta di Partita in January, All Things Irish in March
and a Mexican Dinner in May. Then, when we move
into fall, we will have our Murder Mystery Dinner,
which is always a favorite!
In addition, we have planned some educational and
interesting trips. In June, we are going to revisit the
Naval Undersea Museum in Bremerton where history
is reborn through exhibits of model ships, submarines
and dive gear. In October, we will
visit Hunter Farms where you can
take the tractor ride out to the
pumpkin patch and/or try your
skill at the corn maze. You can
also purchase your Halloween
pumpkin and visit the general
store. Afterward, we will continue
to the Lucky Dog Casino for a
shared meal.
Nativity House
The Senior Center is going to
be bustling next year. I hope you will stop by and
visit with us or join us for a fun filled event or trip.
Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed to have
fun!
