South Chennai constituency records lowest
polling percentage in Chennai
By RANDOR GUY
G.RAMANATHAN - 4
As the new decade -1940s - dawned, G. Ramanathan made
a mark with the hit of the year ‘Uthamaputhran’, directed and
produced by the Salem-based Indian movie mogul T.R.
Sundaram of Modern Theatres Limited. It was a successful
rehash of the Hollywood hit film of 1939, ‘The Man in the Iron
Mask’.
The French novelist Alexander Dumas was a prolific writer
of historic adventure and this novel became very successfuland
found its way to Hollywood. It was made more than half a dozen
times under different titles with different casts and direction.
Later it was also made as a TV series in Japanwhich was also
a hit.
Sundaram made the first Tamil version of the story in which
he introduced a new feature for the first time in the history of
Tamil Cinema - the dual role. P. U. Chinnappa, the singing star
of the 1940s, was Sundaram’s discovery and was cast by him
in the role of the twins. Even though Chinnappa had acted in
a few films earlier, it was this filmwhich placed him firmly on
the ladder of fame and success. This feature per se was one of
the main causes of the success of this filmbecause moviegoers
wondered how two similar looking men could talk to each other
and, what was more interesting, indulge in sword fights!
This film had, besides Chinnappa, T. S. Balaiahas the
villainand the singing star of Karnataka, M.V. Rajamma, as
the heroine.
The music composer G. Ramanathan created a fine impression on the Salem movie mogul not only with his musical talents
and acquired skills but also with his disciplined methods of work,
pleasing manners and such other factors. Not surprisingly,
Sundaram employed Ramanathan to compose music for quite
a few of his later films and also gave him roles to play.
Like most Tamil movie music composers of the day,
Ramanathan too did not bother about copyright laws and made
use of popular Hindi film tunes for the songs in this film.
Interestingly the song-book mentions details of the Hindi film
songs which were adapted by Ramanathan.
That was not all. That was the period when the songs of the
rebel poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar were banned
by the British government and he had moved to Pondicherry
which was then part of French India. One of his famous songs,
‘Senthamizh nadennum pothinely inba then vandhu payudhu
kaathiniley’, was used in this film unmindful of British Indian
government’s ban. Chinnappa sangit as a ragamalikawhich
became popular. In small towns moviegoers cheered this song
loudly and some saw the film repeatedly mainly for this song.
Ramanathan also made use of Classical Carnatic Music and
composed songs in ragas like Kedharagowla, Mohanam
Behagand others in the ragamalika song
Besides Chinnappa, this film had Balaiah as the villain.
Interestingly, the cover page of the song-book of this film has
onlythe photograph of Balaiah, Rajamma, N. S Krishnan and
T. A. Mathuram but not of Chinnappa, the possible reason
beingthat he was not yet a star which he became with the
success of this movie.
Others in the cast included K. K. Perumal, C.V.V.Panthulu,
T. S. Krishnaveni, Sandow Natesan, U. R Jeevaratnam in a
supporting role, S.S. Kokko , Kali N. Ratnam, C.T. Rajakantham,
P.R. Mangalam, and P. A. Periyanayaki. later a top off-screen
singer who also played a supporting role in movies.
S. Velsamy Kavi wrote the lyrics while the dialogues were by
D.V. Chari, a close associate of the Modern Theatres boss.
There were comic songs rendered by Kali N. Ratnam and C.T.
Rajakantham, N.S. Krishnan and T.A. Mathuram, ‘Buffoon’
Shanmugam andC.R. Kamala. In such songs, names of the
communities to which the characters belong were mentioned
which today would be deleted from the film. Those were the days
when the British Indian government did not bother about such
references to caste and community
Ramanathan’s music came in for praise and paved the way
for him to go places, which he did soon!

Though the poll turnout for
the 2014 general elections in
Tamilnadu was a healthy 73
percent, Chennai recorded the
lowest.
Out of the three Lok Sabha
constituencies in Chennai, the
South Chennai constituency
(which includes T. Nagar,
Mambalam, Ashok Nagar and
K.K. Nagar) earned the dubious distinction of having
polled the least percentage of
57.86, despite being considered
a prestigious seat by politicians.
The voter turnouts for the
other two seats – Chennai
Central and Chennai North –
were 60.9 percent and 64.63
percent respectively.
Dharmapuri constituency logged the highest percentage of votes with 80.99

Kittu Park ill-maintained
By Our Staff Reporter
Kittu Park (adjoining K. R.
Koil Tank, Ellaiamman Koil
Street, West Mambalam) is in
a neglected condition.
The walker’s path is slippery
as it is covered with sand. There
are no chairs for visitors and
the children’s play structures
are in bad condition.
Nearby residents told
Mambalam Times that with
the summer holidays starting,
the park is a good recreational
place for children in the mornings and evenings.
“At present we walk around
the park and take our kids to a
nearby playground,” they said.
They have appealed to
Chennai Corporation to repair
the structures and clean the
park so that it can be put to
proper public use.

tree walk in
Panagal Park
By Our Staff Reporter
Nizhal, a trust to promote
concern for trees in the city,
conducted its ‘Chitrai Tree
Walk’ in Panagal Park (T.
Nagar) on April 20.
The walk was guided by program coordinator Usha Sreedhar.
She said that there was a
very good response and both
the young and the elderly participated in the walk.
The participants learnt
about the various species of
trees in the park, including
bodhi, gulmohar, mast and
vilvam.
Each tree’s significance to
the environment and its medicinal value were explained,
she said.
“Nailing advertisement
boards on the trees will cause
bacterial and viral infections.
Cementing around the trees is
illegal. The roots start deteriorating and it disrupts the flow
of water and absorption of minerals for the branches.
Hanging lights on the trees
kill millions of microbes and
exposes birds’ nests.
The birds are unable to take
rest in the night. Most people
do not know about these
things,” she added. Such tree
walks are being conducted at
regular intervals, she said.
Those who are interested in
participating in such walks
may contact Usha in 97910

Sir, I reside at 26, Abdul Azeez Street, T.
Nagar. Nowadays, the road margin on either
side of the street is occupied by parked vehicles thereby narrowing the road width.
While most of them park the cars in front of
their houses, some residents with more than
one car park their vehicles outside other residents’ compound.
Likewise, a nearby resident has permanently parked his car along the road margin
in front of my house and refuses to remove it
even when I need that space. I have also
posted a complaint in the Facebook page of
Chennai Traffic Police a week back. The car is
still there.
Will the concerned authorities look into
this matter and take suitable action?— K.
Raman, 26, Abdul Azeez Street, T. Nagar
Pedestrian subway a must at accidentprone Burkit Road-Usman Road
junction
Sir, In the Mambalam Times issue dated
April 19-25, there was a news item about the
death of a senior citizen at the Burkit RoadUsman Road junction caused by a speeding
MTC bus.
There are frequent accidents at the junction because of the lack of safety measures for
pedestrians.
At the centre of the junction, though there
is a signal, it caters only to the vehicles and
there is no zebra crossing. The pedestrians
are forced to exercise extreme caution as they
have to cross based on the direction the vehicles are plying.
Added to the woes, the road margins are
further blocked by parked share autos and
MTC buses.
To ease the life of pedestrians I recommend
constructing a subway at the junction. – V.S.
