CM YK MAMBALAM TIMES The Neighbourhood Newspaper for T. Nagar & Mambalam www.mambalamtimes.in Vol. 18, No. 12 896th Issue : August 18 - 24, 2012 Fire stations get hi-tech motorcycles By Our Staff Reporter Royal Enfield motorcycles equipped with firefighting apparatus were given for use by personnel of T. Nagar and Ashok Nagar Fire and Rescue Stations by Tamil Nadu Government on Aug. 15. One motorcycle has been provided for each station. R. Ravichandran (Station Fire Office, T. Nagar) told Mambalam Times that each motorcycle, costing Rs. 6.75 lakhs, has also been fitted with a public address system and siren. He said that firemen on these motorcycles will be able to enter narrow streets to fight fires as fire engines find it difficult to approach narrow roads and lanes. Each motorbike is equipped with two cylinders containing chemical mist instead of water. One liter of the chemical is as effective as 200 liters of water used in conventional firefighting. The mist also ab- sorbs heat faster. This technology will complement conventional methods rather than replace them. Each cylinder will have a ca- pacity of 10 liters. A 2-liter air bottle will be attached to it. When sprayed, the water and air will be compressed under high pressure and come out as mist. While conventional fire tenders discharge water at the rate of 450 liters to 1,800 liters per minute, the cylinders discharge mist at .45 liters per second. They are ideal for initial stages of a fire. The bikes will be in operation till fire tenders reach the spot. They can only complement conventional fire fighting methods rather than replace them. They are ideal for fires in cars that occur on the highways and ones in small spaces. The motorcycles and the equipment have been bought with funds provided by the Central Government. Student drowned in school swimming pool M. Ranjan (Std. 4 student of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School, K. K. Nagar) drowned in the school swimming pool during a swimming class on Aug. 16 morning. K. K. Nagar police arrested Swimming Coach Rajasekaran (36), Physical Director Ravichandran (39), Asst. Swimming Coach Arun Kumar (18), pool cleaner Ravi (31) and pool contractor Ranga Reddy (64), and registered a case under Section 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of IPC. They were remanded to judicial custody. A preliminary report of post-mortem examination stated that water had entered the boy’s windpipe, resulting in br eat hl es s nes s and respiratory failure. Ranjan (9), who has been swimming for two years, was doing his laps along with 25 classmates from one Continued on page 3 FREE Page 2 MAMBALAM TIMES T. NAGAR BAZAAR TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 26 With his impressive voice and handsome looks and flair for singing, Subbaiah Bhagavathar made his way up fast and played lead roles on stage. Soon he was a stage star. Meanwhile he learnt classical Carnatic music, and emerged as an excellent singer. He was a major draw and his song ‘Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala...” became a rage among audiences. He sang this song as his signature tune as he entered the stage in every play, irrespective of its period, the character he was playing and the situation! Even when he played Lord Rama he entered the stage singing ‘Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala’, an anachronism because Krishna was born long after Rama. Maybe not correct according to the theory of drama of Aristotle but nobody cared! Neither the audiences nor Bhagavathar! In a play as Lord Krishna, he came on stage dressed in a silk suit with bow tie and all. Only the top hat was missing! The musical duels between Bhagavathar and Devudu Iyer led to a misunderstanding between the two artistes and, for two long years, they went their separate ways. ‘By public demand’ they came together again in March, 1933 and the two, referred to as ‘kesaris’ (lions!), worked in the successful mythological play ‘Bhama Vijayam’. Bhagavathar was Lord Krishna and their battle began once more with verve, sound and fury. Mikes were not yet in use in those days and actors had to sing at the top of their voices! It is interesting to note that Subbaiah Bhagavathar sent Vasan and Kalki a lawyer’s notice for defaming him in ‘Ananda Vikatan’! But Vasan was unfazed. He knew that, if the actor went to court, the resultant publicity would help the circulation of his weekly! As they say in Hollywood, there is nothing called ‘bad publicity’. All publicity is good because you are being written about and not forgotten! The story of Nandanar, as immortalised by Gopalakrishna Bharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnatic music greats. In 1935, another version of ‘Nandanar’ was produced which created history at many levels. One of the immortals of Carnatic music, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, made his only appearance in film as the rich Brahmin landowner Vedhiyar under whom Nandan worked as his lowly ill-treated farmhand. A legend in his lifetime, the mercurial maestro of music was a bohemian and agreed to play the role, although the lead role of Nandan was to be played by a woman, K. B. Sundarambal. Indeed KBS had reservations for she was a lowborn woman while Maharajapuram was a highborn Brahmin! Such class, caste, communal distinctions and prejudices prevailed in top gear in those days. But the great musician did not care because he was above such narrow view and tunnel vision attitudes. He received a fee of three thousand rupees while KBS got an unheard of salary of one lakh rupees - a mega buck fortune indeed in 1935! The two acting in a film became news per se! Public expectation ran high and moviegoers eagerly awaited the release of the film. The film was produced by Hassandas Classical Talkies and directed by the noted Hollywood- trained filmmaker, Manik Lal Tandon. He made many Tamil films during 1930-1940s and ‘Nandanar’ was one of them. His films included ‘Bhama Vijayam’ (1934), a super hit in which Lord Krishna was acted by Maharajapuram R. Krishnamurthy, Viswanatha Iyer’s younger brother. It was in this mythological box office bonanza that another legend of Carnatic music, a legend that still lives long after the mortal man had gone to the yonder blue, the never-never-land of no return, G. N. Balasubramaniam (immortalized under his famous initials, GNB) took his bow in cinema as the musical sage Narada. Student death in swimming pool: 5 held tered and the police are investigating the case.” Report courtesy The Hindu Rajasekaran Ravi Continued from page 1 end of the pool to the other on a stretch of water that is not more than 4 ft deep. Around 9.30 a.m, after a couple of laps, he tried to come up by climbing the pool ladder but struggled to breathe and collapsed. Coach Rajasekaran and his Ravichandran Ranga Reddy assistant rushed to the boy’s aid and pulled him out,” said R. Sivakumar (Deputy Commissioner of Police, T. Nagar). Ranjan was rushed to a private clinic on R. K. Shanmugam Salai where doctors referred him to Vijaya Hospital saying his condition was serious, the officer said. Arun Kumar Ranjan was pronounced ‘brought dead’ by doctors in Vijaya Hospital. The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Indira Vaidyanathan (School Principal) said: “When he came to school in the morning he was normal. After he swam on the three-foot side, he started coughing, and was immediately taken to K.M. Nursing Home and then to Vijaya Hospital. From the school’s side we had taken all precautions, and the class teacher, lifeguard and coach were all present near the pool.” Sheela Rajendra (Deputy Dean & Director, and Correspondent) said: “We cannot make any comment now. All I can say is that we are shat- Spotlight on safety aspects in swimming pools The drowning of Ranjan, a Std. 4 student of PSBB School, in the school’s swimming pool on Aug. 16 has thrown up many questions on safety in swimming pools. “It is hard to imagine how one coach can manage 26 children in a pool at a time. Ideally, there should be a coach for every 5 to 7 students because his line of vision will be limited to five meters. Also, two lifeguards in uniform must monitor the entire pool,” said T. Elango (coach and Proprietor of V. V. Swimming Pool). If the children are just beginners then each of them should be coached individually with care, he said. There are other aspects of safety that require attention, Elango pointed out. For instance, there should be lifebuoys and a rope, and the depth of the pool should be clearly indicated on the pool walls. Also, only if the water is clear, can the coach see if a child drowns. “For clear water, the right amount of chlorine must be added and water should be tested every two months,” he said. When the depth varies from 3 to 7 ft, it is difficult to make out if a child is drowning if clarity is poor, he said. It is not always the case that only a beginner drowns, said the swimming coach. “Even good swimmers get tired and when they do, they are also susceptible to drowning,” he said. In such cases, the coach or the lifeguard must press the victim’s stomach to pump out the water, give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or chest compressions, and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. For this, he must undergo first-aid training provided by some agencies especially for coaches. Some schools which are equipped with swimming pools and give regular coaching to their students say utmost care has to be taken while handling children in water. “We ensure there are only 5 to 6 students in the pool at a time. Two coaches and four lifeguards are always on duty,” said Sarah Selvakumari (Vice Principal, Maharishi International Residential School). They said that there was no response to calls made by the residents to complaint numbers. When residents marched to the EB office they found the receiver of the telephone off the hook. SADANAND Dara Singh, the macho hero of my college days (when one thinks more of one’s muscles than one’s facial map) looked like a mountain when, one day, friend Hegde and I walked into the Marina Canteen having slipped out of Prof. Sethuraman’s economics drivel at the Presidency College opposite, for elevenses. Ali, our favourite waiter, told us that the mountain with the rippling biceps was Dara Singh. He must have been several inches beyond 6 feet, because Hegde, who was a six-footer, looked tiny hunched in his chair sipping tea. I, a good 6 inches shorter than Hegde, never compare myself with anyone and so always felt at ease in the company of giants and dwarfs, for I had discovered the Higgs Boson at my birth that we are all variations of particles that get distributed helter skelter and there is no copyright to it. Higgs will probably have to take a trip to Stockholm for the 2013 Nobel ceremony, and I hope he would at least throw these humble wrestlers or other performers a thought on our good old Bose who, like me, had discovered the truth that was omnipresent that we are all particles. Dara, being human, had to go like all good or bad things. These performers or world shakers leave the legacy of wisdom for ordinary chaps like me that, be you ever so high, there is something higher and ineffable, the search for which is what billions of the earthlings are engaged in. It is certainly a cold comfort, but comfort is not dependent on temperature but temperament. The great expo Olympics has just ended, but all that I will see is PARTICLES and their clamour for ascendancy. No medals from me. Corporation’s smaller house site proposal rejected Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has rejected Chennai Corporation’s proposal to reduce the minimum area required for construction of a residential house in the city, Corporation sources said. The proposal to reduce the minimum area required for construction of a residential house from 80 sq. meters (861 sq. ft) to 50 sq. meters (538 sq. ft) was mooted by Mayor Saidai Duraiswamy, who felt a smaller plot size will benefit the common man and help make housing affordable for the weaker sections. However, the CMDA, in its reply, said that the plot extent is a basic planning parameter that determines the extent of built-up area and setback spaces and, as such, relaxing it will have serious implications on natural ventilation and safety. CMDA said that if Chennai Corporation faces problems in issuing planning permission in cases where the plot extent is less than 80 sq. meters, it can relax the planning parameters only if there are demonstrable hardships, family partition, court cases depending on the genuineness as done by CMDA. Corporation sources said that a survey by CMDA was carried out following the request from the Chennai Corporation in a few blocks of the older parts of the city like Triplicane, Mylapore, Tondiarpet and Purasawalkam. The survey found that even in continuously built-up areas, plot sizes were more than 50 sq. meters. It indicated that even in old land parcels no further sub-division has taken place.
