THE AVM STORY - 83
Meenakumari (1933-1972), hailed as one of the best actresses of Indian Cinema, came from a family of theatrical
background, her father Ali Bux being a stage actor and mother
Iqbal Begum a dancer.
Named Mahajhabeen, she entered movies to support the
family as a child actress under the name ‘Baby Meena’ in 1939.
Renamed Meenakumari, she blossomed as an excellent actress of tragic serious roles and showed a wide range including
comedy.
Her complicated private life influenced her screen persona
and urged her to write and publish poetry. She created memorable roles in costume and period films like “Baiju Bawra”
(1952), “Azad” (1955), “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” (1962),
“Chitralekha” (1964), and “Pakeezah” (1971). Sadly she did

itself. More than 35 dishes are

In 1957, Meiyappan scored one of his finest triumphs with
“Bhabhi”, the Hindi remake of “Kula Deivam”. It was a major
success of the year and enjoyed long runs in many States of
northern India including Punjab where normally heavy melodrama did not always find favour with folks! In Calcutta, it had
an astonishing run of 54 weeks at Roxy cinema. The issue of
widow remarriage evoked empathy in family audiences contributing to the grand success of the film.
Meiyappan introduced the directors of the Tamil version,
Krishnan-Panju, to Hindi cinema with “Bhabhi”. The excellent
actor and Hindi film star, Balraj Sahni, played the elder
brother. Pandari Bai played the same role as his wife and her
performance was highly impressive.
Balraj Sahni (1913-1973) was a person of varied talents and
skills. Writer, poet, journalist, college lecturer, and brilliant
stage and screen star, he is considered one of the best actors
of India. A Leftist by conviction, he wrote Hindi fiction and,
after an impressive career on stage, he came into cinema with
“Dharti Ke Lal” (1946). His convincing performance as the
struggling, starving, land-less farmer in the Indian neo-realistic classic, Bimal Roy’s “Do Bigha Zamin” (1953) brought him
stardom and undying fame. His fame soared high with “Garam
Coat” (1955), “Sone Ki Chidiya” (1958), “Kabuliwala”(1961),
“Haqeeqat” (1964), and ”Garam Hawa”(1973). A champion of
the underdog, he was a highly respected figure of Indian
Cinema.

Free Narayaneeyam classes for
women
1957 was a historic year for Meiyappan. He produced three
Hindi films and the third film brought him not only fame and
name but also proved memorable - a time to cherish in his
memory and recall with justifiable pride and pleasure. Interestingly, the third film of 1957 which gave so much joy to him
was a children’s film, “Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke” - an unusual
genre for him and AVM Studios! It created history as the first
film to win the Indian Prime Minister’s Gold Medal for the Best
Children’s Film.

By M. A. SADANAND
Every evening, when I switch on the TV,
I straightaway land on Asianet in spite of its
generous lard of the good things of the market without which one feels lost in this bountiful and beauty-filled world and feel honoured
that the goodies of life are brought before me
as though I am in a fabulous supermarket
which I have heard of but never shopped in.
One paint company has made a vow to
spread sunshine and colour in the lives of the
viewers by showing an old decrepit man, a
retired teacher, going to seed sitting on the
steps of his house, when an old student
approaches him. The chap bows and touches
his feet whereupon the oldie says, “I am old
and so is my house”. The rich-looking young
man immediately promises to take care of
both. And he does it with the special brand of
paint which makes his house sparkle. The
oldie, overwhelmed by happiness, travels
back 20 years. How wonderful! He must
have been a humane, loving teacher who
had made even the most fractious student
attend his class.
I did not have such a good fortune in my 8th
standard in the rural high school where I
studied before defecting to Madras. Chandu
Mash, my class teacher with a gruff exterior,
was the biggest customer of cane sticks, in
the wielding of which he was miles ahead of
the rest of the teacherdom.
One bad morning he threw a challenge,
“What is the opposite of big?”. After 20
petrified mouths gaped and the cane did
yeomen service by its swish proving its worth,
he had a ghost of a smile as though he had
won a bet that not even one of the students
deserved to be in his class.
My turn came and, after a silent vow to
break ten coconuts at the local Bhagavathi
temple, I took a dozen breaths and spluttered “Small”. He appeared shocked, but the
cane did not meet my palm and continued its
sway until 39 other palms were seared.
Bhagavathi got her 10 plus 2 coconuts as
bonus that evening and Chandu Mash became my hero. When, at the end of the school
year, I joined the M.C.C. in Madras, his was
the only face I remembered and still remember at my 78-plus age. He must have gone to
his Maker without the help of a paint company or a once beaten student.

More areas earmarked for vehicle parking
By Our Staff Reporter
Traffic police have earmarked more stretches for
parking of cars/2-wheelers on
Bazullah Road and Theagaraya Road in T. Nagar and Arya
Gowda Road in West Mambalam.
The exercise was carried out
on the occasion of World Parking Day celebrations from
Sept. 16 to Oct. 15.
A. Marimuthu (Inspector,
Traffic, T. Nagar Range) and
K. Thiruvengadam (Inspector,
Traffic, Ashok Nagar Range)
told Mambalam Times that,
as far as possible, spots where
trees are slanting across the
road which are avoided by
motorists have been chosen
for parking 2-wheelers. Yellow
lines have been painted to facilitate parking.
Banners highlighting the significance of safe parking were
displayed in many places.
Traffic police distributed
pamphlets among motorists
at busy junctions.
