MLA inspects poor condition of PDS shop on Rameswaram Street
Sir, Following several complaints by T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, V.P. Kalairajan
(T. Nagar MLA) and Rajendran (Asst. Commissioner, Civil Supplies) inspected the bad
condition of the PDS shop numbers HC007 and HC009 functioning out of a single cramped
premises on Rameswaram Road (T. Nagar) on Oct. 6. They interacted with the cardholders
outside the shop, who poured out their grievances. They told Kalairajan that the pathway
leading to the shop is always littered with garbage and the sideways are used as a public urinal.
They also complained that the shop has only one staff member and does not have enough space
to store the monthly stocks, forcing the cardholders to come several times. Rajendran told the
Association that the Department has planned to demolish the existing building and erect a new
structure. He assured the cardholders that more helping hands will be deployed at the shop to
speed up the transactions. Kalairajan assured to take quick action to resolve the problems. –

Water logging after light rains on Brindavan Street
Sir, Even after the light showers on Oct. 6, Brindavan Street (West Mambalam) got flooded.
It reflects the poor condition of the storm water drainage system on the street. It is a busy road
and the drivers, especially the 2-wheeler riders, struggled to maneuver their vehicles. It also
led to severe traffic congestion. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to de-silt the drains and clear
the inlets to avoid water logging in the future. – V. Venkatakrishnan, 43, Brindavan Street,
West Mambalam
Sewage water leaking into well and Metrowater sump
Sir, Sewage water has mixed with well and Metrowater
at my house on Neelakanta Mehta Street (T. Nagar).
The water has become unusable even for washing
clothes and vessels. There is a high level of stench which
has now also become a health hazard. I am forced to buy
water privately to offset the daily needs. Metrowater
officials are not responding to my complaints. I once
again appeal to the Metrowater officials to conduct an
inspection and set right the problem.— Vasu, 20/44,
Neelakanta Mehta Street, T. Nagar, Ph:

MTC should ply non-a/c buses from T. Nagar to Kancheepuram
Sir, Presently MTC runs only air-conditioned buses between Kancheepuram and T. Nagar
on Route 576 which takes a circuitous route probably to make the service more profitable. The
travel time extends beyond two hours. It should either ply non-a/c buses between T. Nagar and
Kancheepuram via the shorter Tambaram-Padapai route to reduce the commuting time or
extend some of the T. Nagar-Padapai route services up to Kancheepuram. – V.S. Jayaraman,
31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
Beggar menace outside temples
Sir, After beggar menace was reported outside popular temples, the authorities took action
to remove them. However in the past few months they have again started to file outside temple
entrances and harass the devotees. They also dirty the surroundings of the holy places.
Ayodhya Mandapam has also erected a board outside asking beggars to keep away, but to no
effect. Further, the approach roads to some of the temples like Shirdi Sai Baba Temple and
Ashok Nagar Anjaneyar Temple are in a bad condition. I appeal to the authorities to lay
concrete roads near temples and also put a stop to the beggar menace.— Dr. Chidambara
Kumarasamy, No. 40 (Old No. 71), 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

Lane near Ranganathan Street encroached upon by shops
Sir, The small lane between Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street (T. Nagar) which links
Usman Road with Rameswaram Road, providing a short route to Mambalam Railway Station,
is encroached upon. It has also become a hub for anti-social activities, especially during night.
Chennai Corporation workers some years ago had removed a number of unauthorized shops
occupying the lane. But these shops later came back within a short period. As there is no proper
lighting in the street which remains dark during nighttime, miscreants utilize the lane for
consuming liquor and pursuing illegal activities. One cannot walk on this lane as it is always
littered with empty liquor bottles, rubbish and plastic waste. I appeal to the police and
Corporation officials to rid the lane of the vendors and anti-social elements so that it can be used
safely by pedestrians.— S.R. Radhakrishnan, T. Nagar
Will Corporation clarify issues raised on extending Usman Road flyovers?
Sir, If there are misgivings about the proposal to extended Usman Road flyovers to connect
Mahalingapuram with Anna Salai, these arise from the poor track records of our civic body’s
expertise in designing and execution of some of the existing flyovers. The questions raised are
out of genuine fears and in all fairness the civic body should give unambiguous clarifications
for the points raised.— S. Rajagopalan, Anandan Street, T. Nagar

T. Nagar and Mambalam
residents appear not to be in
favour of the proposed plan
to connect Mahalingapuram
with Anna Salai by merging
the North and Usman Road
flyovers and extending it up
to Anna Salai.
Residents say the issues
will be compounded if the plan
materialises. There are four
major woes – further narrowing of service lanes, no
space of fire tenders in case
of emergencies, increase in
encroachments and restricting movement of residents.
“If these two flyovers are
merged, what the Corporation will construct will be the
closure of T Nagar,” said a
resident.
T. Nagar Residents’ Association members said that
residents of streets abutting
Usman Road will have problems in crisscrossing. “Encroachment beneath the
flyovers will hit road users
badly,” they said. “Commuters will not be able to alight at
intermediary stops like T.
Nagar Bus Stand, Viveks,
Bharati Nagar or Bazulla
Road,” they added.

Pawnbroker identifies suspect in
Babyammal’s murder
Police have managed to zero in on Babyammal’s murderer after a
pawnbroker identified the suspect and surrendered the stolen jewellery.
Babyammal’s dead body was found in a room in Tamilnadu Saliyar
Mahaana Sangam Lodge where she used to deliver breakfast everyday.
It was last occupied by a person named Saravanan and his family from
Madurai.
Saravanan (25), the prime suspect in the Sept. 21 murder of food
vendor D. Babyammal (70), pledged the stolen gold for Rs. 65,000 with
a pawnbroker in West Mambalam after the crime.
After Babyammal’s body was recovered on Sept. 25, police released
Saravanan and his family member’s photographs to the media. Pawnbroker Thukka Ram, with whom the murderer had pledged the jewellery,
after seeing Saravanan’s photo on the media, handed over the jewellery
to the police and also confirmed Saravanan’s identity.
