Our Leadership
Dear Friends and Supporters:
My Little Brother – Words from our Board President
The mentoring programs of Big Brothers Big Sisters do
change lives. Your financial support has the same effect.
In 2010, you helped match over 500 children with a
positive adult mentor, and we are continuing to set goals to
create brighter futures for even more children.
I began my match with my little brother
Nandre during the time he was a 4th
grader in elementary school in North
Little Rock. We would spend lunch
hours together and discuss life, liberty
and the pursuit of everything a fourth
grader dreams of at their age. I learned
how much it meant to have a person
outside of his family listen to his ideas and problems and to help
him work through solutions to those problems on his own.
This year’s annual report focuses on a wide range of
investments on the part of volunteers, parents, and staff.
These personal investments would not be possible without
the financial contributions of our individual supporters,
foundations, corporations, and sponsors.
The investments are not short-term. They are investments
that have the power to change lives, yielding long term
benefits. We encourage you to be a part of something BIG
by continuing to support Big Brothers Big Sisters. Just
imagine the positive impact we can make if together we all
“Say Yes”!
Warm regards,
As Nandre approached the 5th grade
we both chose to convert our match
to a community based match which
afforded us the opportunity to spend
time together outside the school
environment.
We have enjoyed activities over the
years that have included flying to Petit Jean Mountain, fishing,
golf, learning to swim, bowling and the ever-favorite “all you can
eat buffet”. Nandre is a talented young man with a kind faith and a
great sense of humor. He also has a great love and devotion to his
five brothers and sisters as well as the rest of his family.

with me.
As I look back over my 6-year
relationship with Nandre, I realize how
different our lives are and in many
ways how similar our lives have been.
He is now in high school; however he
still remembers to give me a call on
Father’s Day. He is growing up as a
young man; however he still enjoys
celebrating his birthday eating at Chili’s
Nandre is an example of the reason that Big Brothers Big Sisters
is changing the lives of the children in our community, one life at a
time and the reason that I choose to invest my time and resources
in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas.

Our Program
Our Mission: To provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally
supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
Our Vision: We want all children to achieve success in life.
Accountability Statement: We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in
the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving:
higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships with the avoidance of risky
behaviors and educational success.
In 2010, 559 children were served by the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Children between the ages of 6 and 18 were
mentored by carefully screened and approved volunteers through two core programs: community – based and site –
based mentoring.
Community Mentoring: Big Brothers Big Sisters community mentoring seeks to have a positive
impact on youth by spending one-to-one time with a child on the weekends or during the evenings.
These matches participate in activities they both enjoy. Mentors in this program develop friendships
with the Littles by scheduling visits two – three times a month. Activities can include eating lunch
together, watching a sporting event, playing video games, or just running errands together. Through
the time our Littles spend with their Bigs, our youth have an additional positive role model in their lives
to encourage them. In 2010, 327 youth were served in the community program.
Site Mentoring: It may sound obvious, but sometimes the best place to help a child realize their
potential is at school. Kids enjoy having their Bigs meet with them there, whether it’s in the classroom
or on the playground. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ school mentors spend one hour a week with their Little
eating lunch together, reading a book in the library, working on a school assignment, or just talking about
their week together. In 2010, 232 youth were served in the site program.

Agency Highlights
Big Brothers Big Sisters Partners with Savers to Accept
Clothing Donations & Fund Programs
Big Brothers Big Sisters and Savers entered into a partnership in January of 2010,
and created a clothing donation program. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation
Center collects clothing, furniture and household items from the community by
utilizing delivery routes, on-site donation centers and donation bins. The items
collected through the Donation Center are used to generate funding for our
mentoring programs, which provides an unlimited source of funding that is critical to
Big Brothers Big Sisters. The clothing donation program allows us to turn clothing
and furniture donations into monetary funds that help sustain our organization.
National Fraternity Partnership Strengthened on Local Level
A national partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Omega Psi Phi in 2010 has
sparked the beginning of a joint partnership on the local level. Representatives from each local alumni chapter began meeting
in February of 2010. The group has assisted with local fundraisers, recruited Bigs, and volunteered at events. The committee
has a goal to recruit 20 men to become Big Brothers and serve as advocates for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
National Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Karen Mathis Visits Little Rock
and Speaks at Clinton School of Public Service
National CEO Karen Mathis was invited to speak at the Clinton School of Public
Service April 8, 2010. Her visit brought strong visibility to the program in Arkansas as
she visited each Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in the state. A VIP reception at the
Governor’s Mansion prior to her presentation at the Clinton School allowed volunteers,
donors, and agency supporters the chance to visit with Karen. During her presentation, she discussed the vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters and the importance of oneto-one mentoring to a packed room of people from around the state.
