INTRODUCTION
The Newark Community Resource Directory is a listing of agencies in the Newark area that offer services
to youth and their families. The agencies are listed in alphabetical order, but you will have to read
through the listings of agencies to determine whether or not the services you need are available.
All of the agencies listed have addresses, telephone numbers, and some have a contact person. Just
reading through the directory can provide you with some knowledge of services and activities for young
people in Newark. By no means is this directory meant to be a complete listing of services available to
youth, but rather a document upon which to build.
The directory can be used to make referrals, find summer programs, locate alternative programs, and to
locate special services.

Day and evening classes are conducted free of charge at various sites throughout the city and within the surrounding
area. The following is a brief description of each program.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is designed for persons lacking the most basic educational skills. Program instruction
focuses on basic communication, computation, and work readiness, civic and everyday living skills.
English as a Second Language (ESL) is designed for persons with limited English language ability. Instruction is planned
to prepare them in the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to function effectively in an
English-speaking environment and to enter other adult education programs.
General Educational Development (GED) (GED-S) is designed for persons preparing to take the Tests of General
Educational Development in order to qualify for a State-issued high school diploma. Instruction focuses on subject areas
covered by the GED tests, namely, writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature and the arts, and
mathematics. Instruction is offered in English and in Spanish (GED-S). The program offered in Spanish includes
preparation for an English-as-a-second-language test.

The Consortium for Pre-College Education in Greater Newark is collaboration between East Orange, Irvington, and the
Newark Public School Districts and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Working together in an effort to
strengthen
academic skills, the consortium provides a variety of pre-college programs for student grades 7 through 12 that increase
their chances for high school graduation and entrance into college.

The top goal at Edison Job Corps is to ensure that every qualified student obtains his or her GED/high school diploma
prior to leaving the center. Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the

Essex Campus Academy serves both ―classified‖ and/or ―At-Risk‖ middle school and high school students.
Middle School ages 8-14/High School 14-21 (Academic Year September 7th – June 18th)
Programs:
Extended Day/Summer- The Extended Day / Year Program is an after-school program for foster children under the
auspices of the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services.
Homeless Education – is funded under the Stewart B. McKinney Vento Grants for The Education of Homeless
Children and Youth Act. The HEP provides an array of supplemental educational services to address basic cognitive
and self-help skills, supportive therapy, visual perceptual skills, and receptive and expressive development.
Migrant Education - Funded under the Migrant Education Act, the ERESC operates the Migrant Education Program
(MEP) in 12 counties from Monmouth to Sussex
Supplemental Educational Services - program provides highly effective and research based tutoring services for K-12
students in the home, individual school, community center, or Commission facilities both after school and during
summer months.

The goal of Training, Inc. – under the Essex County College‘s
Community and Continuing Education area – is to increase
the economic self-sufficiency of Essex County‘s urban
unemployed and low-income individuals, thereby enabling
participants, with little or no work experience, to gain a longterm place in the workforce. As a result, the program, in
existence since 1986, serves as a bridge between local residents
in need of self-sustaining employment and local businesses in
need of qualified and motivated entry-level employees.

Free College Prep program for 18-24 year old, at-risk out-ofschool youth that offers 2, six-week classes and the possibility
of college credits. Students have the opportunity to test directly
into college – level courses without taking remedial classes.

The On-Campus Continuing Education Department
provides enrichment courses/programs for youth
enrolled in their Saturday and Summer Youth Programs.
The Saturday Youth Program offers ten-week sessions
during the months of, September to November and
January to March for youth ages 5 -15. We offer a variety
of classes to include: Reading, Math, Computer, Writing,
Etiquette, Phonics, Algebra, Martial Arts, Test Prep,
Acting and Dancing.
The current tuition is $80/class
and fees range from $5 to $20.
Our Summer Youth Program operates for 6-weeks during
July and August. We enroll youth according to the grade
they will be entering in September of the current year.
We provide academic instruction, recreation and cultural
indoor and outdoor activities. Parents have a choice of
programs that offer math, reading, writing, recreation,
dance, acting, artistic skills, arts & crafts, computer,
science, sports and much more. Tuition and Fees vary

Saturday Academy (SAT) –
This program is a two-semester Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Review program for 11th and 12th grade public school
students from Newark, Irvington, and East Orange.
The academy works with 11th and 12th grade students on critical thinking and test-taking skills in writing, reading and
mathematics. Additionally, during the spring semester, 12th grade students are invited to attend college placement
workshops in mathematics and essay writing. The workshops prepare students to take college entrance exams.
Ready –
This program is a comprehensive intervention for selected Newark students to achieve academic success. Since its
inception, the program has expanded its services to provide scholarship support to students successfully completing the
program‘s mission.
The Ready program moved its operations to Rutgers university-Newark to strengthen its support of Ready participants
and to assist in the establishment of the Ready Alumni Association.
Rutgers Future Scholars – Newark Campus –
This program on the Rutgers-Newark campus is housed within the Academic Foundations Center and introduces firstgeneration, low-income and academically-talented middle school students from the city of Newark, to the promise and
opportunities of a college education.
The program has multiple-year components, each building on the foundation of the previous year. Prior to beginning
their eighth grade year, Rutgers Future Scholars become part of a unique pre-college culture of university programming,
events, academic support, and mentoring which continue throughout their high school years.
Students, who successfully complete the program and are admitted to Rutgers, will receive a scholarship covering the
cost of their tuition for four years, funded through a range of grants and donations.

The 2NDFLOOR Youth Helpline is a free, confidential and anonymous helpline for NJ‘s youth ages 10-24. Children,
teens and young adults can call the helpline and find assistance with both everyday and serious problems. Trained
phone counselors provide non-judgmental support, guidance, problem solving and if necessary, referrals to specific
resources. 2NDFLOOR also equipped to handle crisis calls involving issues such as suicide and child abuse/neglect.

ASPIRA promotes leadership through education by offering guidance, career counseling, college placement, and
assistance in obtaining financial aid for a college education.

Boxing Club: In 2008, with the guidance of the Harlem-born boxing legend, Joe Cortez, and various supporters, we
opened our state-of-the art boxing gym located on the basement level of our Administrative Headquarters in Newark. In
less than two months, our gym has forty youth in the program.
Most of whom have never participated in an ASPIRA program.
The program uses boxing to get the youth engaged. From there we teach them discipline, respect and conflict resolution,
so that they use boxing as a sport and not a weapon.
The participants also learn the important of physical fitness, eating healthy and abstaining from drugs and alcohol.

Music Studio: The ASPIRA Music Studio was created in order to introduce our kids to a new means of creative
expression. By offering access to our newly created, full-featured studio, students are able to participate in the
production process from start to finish.
Participants will learn about songwriting, audio equipment and software (including industry-standard ProTools), mixing,
cover art design and much more.
The program enables young people both to express themselves creatively and to get to know career opportunities in the
entertainment industry.

The Transitional Opportunities Program, created in 1985, is New Jersey‘s progressive effort to address the needs of
youth. TOP offers a comprehensive array of transitional living services utilizing a continuum-of-care model. The
current TOP model encompasses levels of service ranging from Shelter care, Group Home and Supervised Transitional
Living Apartments providing 24-hour on-site supervision to Independent Living, frequently the final phase before
termination from program services. A central screening and intake unit provides comprehensive assessment of
appropriateness for TOP and referrals to alternative services. For clients residing in a stable living arrangement, a range
of in-home transitional services is provided on an outreach basis. The goal of TOP is to prepare young adults to live as

The Center's services include vocational evaluation and assessment, training, counseling, job placement, job coaching,

La Casa de Don Pedro is a non-profit, social service organization deeply rooted in the Newark, New Jersey
community. Its history can be traced back to 1972 when a group of ten concerned immigrant families assembled to
discuss the state of their community and the prospects for their children‘s future. Today, while remaining true to its
original mission to foster self-sufficiency, empowerment, and neighborhood revitalization, the organization provides a

The MHAEC is a large, multi-service agency that provides a wide range of outpatient mental health services to the
residents of Essex County.
For Children: The MHAEC offers individual and group outpatient mental health treatment in their Montclair office.
As of October 2011, these treatment services will include psychiatric evaluation and medication from a board certified
Child psychiatrist.
The MHAEC accepts Medicaid, Medicare, Private Insurance, and uses a sliding scale to collect out of pocket fees.
Through specialized arrangements with individual schools, the MHAEC provides in-school supportive counseling to
students and provides supportive consultations with faculty and school personnel.

Integrated Case Management Services – a program that links adult mental health consumers with services and

The Safe House is an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children. The Safe House has 12
rooms and can shelter 12 women and 24 children at any one time. A 24 hour hotline is operational and 24 hour

comprehensive children‘s program, food, clothing, personal necessities, transportation, financial assistance through

A service provided through UMDNJ/UBHC, the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth (TLC)works with the school
community whenever there is a traumatic loss as a result of a sudden death.
We are prepared to work alongside the crisis team, behind the scene as advisors, or as lead responders depending on
the wishes of the Principal and Superintendent. There are no fees involved.
Mrs. O'Connell is available to provide the NJ State mandated and required in-service dealing with Suicide Prevention at
a fee of $400.
As Coordinator in Essex County, Mrs. O'Connell provides free educational workshops with timely topics in
October, December, February, and March. Email notifications notify you of topics, dates, and location.

The Young Fathers Program was created to assist young men in Newark to meet the obligations of fatherhood and to
provide assistance in helping them fulfill their potential by enhancing their ability to meet the financial, educational, social
and emotional demands of fatherhood.
The goal is to strengthen and foster family development, improve child-parent relationships, reduce child neglect and abuse
and promote family planning. The Young Fathers Program offers the following services:
employment counseling and referral;
educational counseling and referral;
at-risk behavior identification and counseling;
parenting, leadership and life skills training;
housing information referral;
social and recreational activities.
Population: The program is focused on young men 15-25 years old in Newark and Essex County New Jersey
