Yaacoub phone:+961-1-255500 Web site: www.telelumiere.com e-mail: [email protected] [email protected] The Assembly of Maronite Bishops Following our annual retreat about the mystery of the Church, the resident and migrant Maronite Bishops held, under the presidency of Patriarch Boutros Raï, and in the attendance of Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, the Holy Assembly from the 16th to the 19th of June, discussing ecclesial pastoral and administrative affairs, general national issues. At the end of the assembly, they declared their positions through a statement showing their joy for the visit of the Patriarch to the Holy Land, confirming the necessity of the priests’ formation in the seminaries. They learned about the activities of the Patriarchal Liturgical Committee, reviewed the situation of the dioceses and the political and social situation in Lebanon, expressed their sorrows and concerns towards the war in Syria and Iraq, and called the Easterners to break the cycle of violence and to work on resolving conflicts with peaceful means. The Synod of Melkites Began The Melkite Church presided over by Patriarch Gregory III Laham, held its Synod at Ain Trez, inspired by the “Joy of the Gospel” Exhortation by Pope Francis. In his inauguration word, His Beatitude confirmed the aim of the Synod saying: “We bring to the Synod our dioceses: their situation, projects, hopes, the suffering and problems of our faithful… We come back to our dioceses with new hopes and new vision. That’s how we support each other, unite and find strength in the Holy Spirit that helps us overcome fear. We as well set together work programs, and projects for spiritual and civilian formation. That’s how our Church achieves the program and slogan of the Synod for the Church in the Middle East: “Communion and Witness.” Aphrem II Challenges Evil in Iraq The Syriac Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Ignatius Aphrem II Karim made a pastoral visit to Iraq, calling his children and especially the displaced from Mosul, to face evil with unity, and he raised prayers with the attendees thanking God for this visit they considered as challenging evil and the painful incidents, he who desired to be supporting his children and be informed from near about their situation. Sako in USA Praying for Iraq Feeling great joy and fully united, the Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle in USA welcomed the Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako who met his children and the priests of the diocese at the Mother of God Cathedral- Michigan, discussing the challenges they are facing in the world of immigrating and the ways of overcoming them. The visit was crowned by the Holy Mass presided by the Patriarch, ordaining Fr. Frank Kallabat, the new Bishop of St Thomas the Apostle Eparchy and the successor of Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim. The ordination was a sign of hope and joy for the Church in Iraq amidst pains, and a sign of light and blessings for the people. On the other hand, Patriarch Sako declared also, in coincidence with the Pope’s call on Wednesday June 18th, a day of fasting and prayer for Iraq, believing that they “are able with the blessing of God to change the human hearts and to push them towards dialogue and respect of each other.” The Corpus Christi Day in Zahle Zahle revived for the 189 year the Corpus Christi Day in its streets and churches. Since the early morning, processions headed by the Holy Eucharist were launched, prayers and Holy Masses were heard in the churches and streets. The Day was crowned by a solemn Mass at Our Lady of Deliverance Cathedral, presided over by the Archbishop of Ferzol, Zahle and Bekaa Bishop Issam Darwish, so the inhabitants of Zahle and the neighborhood were united once again around the Eucharist in a popular wonderful way. Tele Lumiere provided live full coverage of this event, with special interviews and live encounters from Zahle, about the importance of the Holy Eucharist and the significance of this feast.
