Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
The new academic year is right
around the corner! We still have
some spaces in the St. Mary Catholic
School in case you would like to
explore that option. St. Mary School
goes from Pre-K-3 through 8th grade.
It is designed for children and youth
who are interested in having a very
strong academic background to
prepare for high school, college, and university. Every year, our students
rank 95 percentile on national examinations.
Many thanks go to everyone who made last week’s Pre-Encuentro event
on our campus so spectacular. Hosting 250 young people takes plenty of
work and dedication. Thanks especially to Norma and other members of
the Hispanic Ministries of St. Mary.
As you may have observed, men are busy working on the first phase of the
elevator project for the Tileston Center. In this first phase, a ramp is being
built between two of the Tileston buildings. Thank you for your patience
during this construction.

Our Prayer Shawl ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that
receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to
anyone experiencing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry
members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the
2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home.
If you need more information or know of anyone who needs the warmth and
comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen (798-0055). You or the recipient need not

Carolina Catholic interviews the hermit priest of North Carolina
For our two August shows, Carolina Catholic went into the mountains of North
Carolina to interview Father George David Byers, a priest living as a hermit in the
mountains of Transylvania County in the Diocese of Charlotte. With Bishop
Jugis’ permission, Father George lives in the mountains at his Holy Souls Hermitage where he prays for priests, writes, and assists rural parishes on weekends. In our first show, we will be learning about this priest, his 20 years in
Rome, and his four years as a hermit. In our second show, we will be discussing
his thesis and writings on Genesis 2 & 3 where he discusses his scientific and
theological study of the Bible on the topic of original sin.
Office of Social Ministry
Sister Isaac
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time— Sister Isaac
What great images we have in our two major readings today. First of all
we hear that God comes to us in such a gentle way. He does not arrive in
heavy winds, or earthquakes of fire, but in a gentle whisper. It is a
reminder to each one of us that we need to quiet ourselves down from time
to time to hear His whisper.
In the Outreach Ministry here at the Parish we work hard to listen to the
“whispers” of our God, reminding us to have the faith and courage to step
out of the safety of our surroundings and serve those who are in need.
Our Food program touches many families, serving about 450 households
each month. The bags of food distributed have enough items for several
meals and are valued close to $50 worth of groceries. Our guests really
feel very well provided for and this is thanks to the 40+volunteers who
serve them.
Last week we mentioned some of the providers of the food we distribute.
We also have several other sources:

Retail Recovery Program – Initiated by the generosity of Food Lion
years ago, other retail stores now donate food to the Food Bank. 29
of our volunteers pick up food during the month from Food Lion at
Masonboro Commons, either on Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday.
Here’s an interesting fact I just learned: this past year the Food Bank
of Central and Eastern NC received 8.08 million pounds =6.7 million
meals
Apple Annie’s – Though the store is under new management we
continue to pick up bakery and bread, now twice a week. We have
been doing this for over 20 years. Our folks enjoy the treats!
Atlanta Bread- Once a week volunteers pick up bread. It is often
“sliced” and out guests enjoy that!
St. James Episcopal Church – a group of “gleaners” there deliver
blueberries, and sweet potatoes when they are in season. From time
to time we receive donations of produce from local growers – fresh
vegetables are always a big treat.
Thanksgiving Program – UNCW, our Catholic Schools and private
donors provide over 100 food baskets of fresh vegetables, turkeys and
all the fixings.
Christmas Dinners – We provide Christmas dinner for the 30+
families we serve with our Giving Tree Program.
Chris’s Restaurant – Food left over from programs is offered to our
guests who appreciate the treat!
Let us continue to be a giving community which believes that because we
are fed by Eucharist, we are called to feed others. We want to prevent our
brothers and sisters from “sinking” and from doubting that no one cares
about them.
Special Need of the Week
We will be closed for the entire month of August and will reopen September 8th. We are not able to receive any donations during this time
and we really need your cooperation with this, as bags and boxes will
block the entrance to the building during construction.
RCIA
Sessions will begin the end of September. If you are
interested in joining the group please call John Walsh,
during the month of August, at 762-5491 x114.

But when he saw how strong the wind was
he became frightened; and, beginning to
sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and
caught Peter, and said to him, "O you of
little faith, why did you doubt?"

Mom loses her job, and with it, the income that was
paying school tuition.
A marriage falls apart and a parent walks away, leaving the family destitute.
Grandma breaks her hip and has to move in with the
family.
We all have our bumps in the road, but once in awhile, a St.
Mary School family experiences a Random Act of Misfortune that suddenly wipes out a child’s chance to continue a
Catholic education.
In one recent spectacular Random Act of Kindness, an anonymous donor stepped forward to fund a child’s entire tuition for a year when the student’s family suddenly couldn’t
pay.
St. Mary School offers tuition assistance, but we have no
endowment upon which to draw and no reserve fund for
helping family emergencies.
Would you consider making a gift – a Random Act of Kindness – to lend a hand when a student’s family simply can’t
make it financially and must drop out of St. Mary School?
Any amount would help us to help a child in a misfortunate
situation.
 $100 will buy a school uniform for a child who can’t
afford it.
 $400 will pay for a child’s
registration and materials
fee.
 $5,210 will pay for a full year of tuition for a Catholic
child.
All gifts to St. Mary School are tax deductible as allowed
under the IRS code 501(c)3. Gifts will be used at the Principal’s discretion, but if you wish, gifts of $1,000 or more may
be designated for specific purposes and will be used in that
way if possible. All gifts will be considered anonymous, but
will be acknowledged with a tax receipt.
Please prayerfully consider doing a Random Act of Kindness to assist a Catholic family in need continue with the
rich blessing of a Catholic education. Please mail a check or
drop an envelope in the collection basket addressed to:
St. Mary Catholic School
c/o Mrs. Joyce Price, Principal
217 S. 4th St.
Wilmington, NC 28401
Many thanks in advance for your kindness, compassion,
and generosity.
