Welcome to our end of year exhibition and catalogue which
celebrates the work of our Architectural Technology students.
In the first instance our catalogue and exhibition showcases our
students’ work and the support that the Construction Studies
Course Team has given them. We aim to help our students
develop into professional and employable graduates. To facilitate
this we adopt a wide range of approaches to learning and teaching
and put a particular emphasis on using real world case studies.
We are conscious of the need for our graduates to have as
much practical experience as possible and so another way
in which we help students to develop their personal and
professional skills is to offer them the opportunity of taking
part in a week long field trip: “Constructionarium”. Held at
the National Construction College site at Bircham Newton in
Norfolk, students are given the opportunity to experience the
challenges and issues inherent in any construction project.
For the first time this year we participated in, a European lead Intensive
Project.
Our students spent two weeks in Corsica working amongst other
disciplines across other European universities on a retrofit project.
You can read more about these and see just a few of our photos in this
catalogue.
Finally we have some successes to celebrate: the CIAT Student
award for Excellence in Architectural Technology, RICS Student
Awards, the Worshipful Company of Constructors - Constructors
Prize, the CIOB International Innovation & Research
Awards
and the Women in Property Student Awards. PI hope that you enjoy both our exhibition and catalogue.

BUILDING DESIGN 2 + STUDIO A
HOUSE EXTENSION, Benhill Road
This year’s project required an extension to an existing coach house in Camberwell. This was a project which
required students to analyse and understand the structural and spatial complexities of an existing building
and then to design a significant extension and modifications to the existing envelope and spatial layout. The
design should make provision for an, at least, three bedroom and two studio space, residential building, with
an extension of approximately 40 square meters to 60 square meters.
The students had to work around a tight London plot, comply with regulations and adhere to a sustainable
agenda.

BUILDING design STUDIO B + C
The south london gallery, annex
The South London Gallery, having acquired the land and buildings at Benhill Rd. Camberwell, South London,
seeks proposals for the creation of an ancillary facility (Annex) in order to expand its existing provision of artist
residencies.
- The client requires an initial ‘feasibility study’, analysis of the site, surveying of the existing structures and that
proposals are made regarding massing / volumes which are expected to be feasible given site constraints and
area. Once the initial feasibility study is completed, proposals are sought for the refurbishment and significant
extension of the existing buildings at the Benhill Rd. site, in order to provide accommodation and associated
studio space for the SLG’s artist residencies program.
-The client requires that the existing building and extension, be ‘super-insulated’ and that provision is made
for the inclusion of renewable technologies and / or passive strategies resulting in a low or ‘zero’ energy
consumption building.

In May 2014 a group of 35 construction students
spent a week at Constructionarium in Norfolk
where they built scaled down versions of the
Millau Viaduct and Kingsgate Bridge.
During classes the construction staff work to help
students develop their theoretical technical
skills but it is a different matter putting this into
practice. During the week long Constructionarium
trip, students had to develop and practice a wide
range of practical technical skills, most of which
none had experienced previously!
These included interpreting drawings, setting
out, building formwork and reinforcement
and constructing precast and in situ concrete
components. Apart from the construction skills
there were many useful lessons learnt about
leadership, communication, team working,
initiative and how people work under stress. This
amazing project is only possible through the
generosity of our hosts, Byrne Bros who supplied
all the materials needed and provided a team of
experts to guide and support our students.
Senior Project Manager, Tony Backler headed
the Byrne Bros team and found the time to come
to the University prior to the trip to meet the team
leaders and explain what was needed in terms
of developing method statements and the like.
On site Tony was joined by Project Engineer Krisztina
Tőrincsi; Construction Manager Martin Convey,
Trainee Planner Nathan Wharton, Carpenter
and Foreman Sean Gill and Carpenter Cristian
Orghidan. We were also supported by consulting
engineers, Robert Bird.
We are indebted to this team of experts who
worked tirelessly to ensure that both projects
were completed successfully and on time.

CIAT - STUDENT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY
SIMONE CECCATO: BSc Hons Architectural Technology
These Awards recognise the work of students studying on an accredited Architectural Technology Honours
degree programme.
University of Westminster student, Simone Ceccato, was named winner of the Student Award for Excellence
in Architectural Technology (Project). Simone’s theoretical concept was a mixed use scheme entitled Maggie’s
Centre. The judges were unanimous in their decision that this was an outstanding project that clearly
demonstrated excellence within Architectural Technology, and how a very well integrated design incorporated
the technology of architecture.

Constructor’s Prize by the Worshipful Company of Constructors
Construction Management graduate, Hazel Swan, was presented the Constructor’s Prize by the Worshipful
Company of Constructors at an event held on 12 February 2014.
Hazel Swan graduated from the University of Westminster in June 2013 with a First Class Honours Degree in
Construction Management and undertook the degree course on a part time (day release) basis over five years
whilst employed as an assistant design coordinator with Willmott Dixon, one of the UK’s largest privatelyowned capital works, regeneration and support service companies.
The prize is provided by The Worshipful Company of Constructors in association with University of Westminster
and is awarded to the first class honours degree student of the year.
CIOB international i&r Awards 2013 - project intermission
rob Garvey
Rob Garvey, Senior Lecturer in Westminster’s Department of Property and Construction, has
been highly commended in the CIOB International Innovation and Research Awards 2013, in the
Innovation in Education & Training Award category.
This award recognises outstanding contribution to education and training in the built environment.
The project recognised by the award was Project Intermission, led by Rob Garvey and members
of the Department of Property and Construction at Westminster, with input from industry
practitioners. During Project Intermission, Westminster students from various built environment
disciplines worked collaboratively on a ‘real’ project for a ‘real’ client, using cutting-edge Building
Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. BIM technologies enable the creation of a building/
facility to be modelled in a common data environment.

Constructionarium 2014
Byrne Bros involvement in Constructionarium
is linked to its commitment to developing the
skills of its workforce and promoting an ethic of
lifelong learning. This approach has led to highly
motivated teams who are committed to delivering
the best possible outcomes presented by today’s
construction challenges.
Today’s students are tomorrow’s graduates are
the next generation of construction professionals.
If the industry is to move forward then we need
to support projects such as Constructionarium
to give young people a taster of site experience
so that they are better able to hit the ground
running when they move into industry. A week is
a long time when you are doing so many things
for the first time and it gives the Byrne Bros team
a considerable sense of achievement to see the
groups on a steep learning curve that takes them
from largely disparate groups on Monday morning
to competitive and motivated teams by the end of
the week.
Constructionarium 2014 with the University of
Westminster was no exception and although it was
hard going for the large part, both the Millau Viaduct
and Kingsgate Bridge were uccessfully completed on
Friday.
We think that this experience can be life changing
for the students involved and Byrne Bros is proud
to play a part in this. Certainly I learn something
new every year at Constructionarium!
