Inquiries regarding admission to Catawba College are always warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the
Catawba community you should apply for admission anytime
after your sixth semester of high school.
Catawba follows the usual guidelines for “rolling admissions” and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting applications. Applying early will ensure you an early response
from the college.
In your application, you are asked to provide a wide variety of information relating to your academic and co-curricular background. this information is used to help determine
your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the

Dr. Craig Turner
President
Dr. W. Craig Turner became the 21st President of Catawba College in 2008. He came to
Salisbury from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he served as President for
six years.
Dr. Turner joined the administration and faculty of Hardin-Simmons University in 1992, serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English from 1992 to 1996. He then
became Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer until he was named Chief Operating
Officer in June 2000. Dr. Turner then served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at HSU for a year before becoming the 14th President of Hardin-Simmons University on June
1, 2001.
During his tenure as President, HSU saw record enrollments (2,435 in the fall of 2007),
record endowment and similar funds ($121.5 million in 2007), and surplus budgets. HSU finished
the most successful fund raising campaign in its history in December of 2006, having raised $49.7
million. The University successfully completed its Commission on Colleges reaccreditation in 2007, has been chosen as a Top Tier institution by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years and a Best in the West institution by Princeton Review for five consecutive
years.
Dr. Turner was active in the Abilene, Texas, community, serving on the Boards of organizations such as United Way of Abilene,
the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Serenity House, the Abilene Philharmonic, and the Abilene Humanities Council. He has also served
on the Boards of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, the International
Association of Baptist Colleges and Schools, and the Consortium for Global Education, which he currently chairs.
Dr. Turner came to HSU from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, where he was Head of the English Department and
Professor of English from 1985 to 1992. While there, he was chosen as “Teacher of the year,” cited as “Scholar of the year,” and elected
President of the Faculty. H is wife, Annette, served the Clinton Independent School District as a first grade teacher.
Previously, he served as a tenured Assistant and Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University from 1976 to 1985
and as a visiting instructor at Baylor University in 1974-1975. Dr. Turner earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Tulane University
in British and American Literature in 1977, and earned two degrees from Baylor: the Master of Arts in English in 1971 and the Bachelor
of Arts in English and History in 1969. He has edited three books—The Poet Robert Browning and his Kinsfolk, Critical Essays in American Humor, and Critical Essays in Eudora Welty—as well as having published more than two dozen scholarly articles, essays, and
chapters in books. Since he greatly enjoys teaching, he tries to schedule a course every other year to stay active in the profession and
in the classroom.
Dr. Turner and wife Annette have two grown children: Scott, a Development Officer for Texas Tech University, and Shannon
Hays, an attorney, writer, and mother. Shannon and her husband Mike, a Marine Corps Captain, have twin daughters, Madeleine and
Peyton.
Dennis Davidson
Director of Athletics
Dennis Davidson has been director of athletics since May of 1996. He came to Catawba
College in July 1984 as director of public information and moved totally into sports information
one year later. In 1991, Davidson was promoted to assistant to the athletic director, and in 1993,
he was promoted to assistant athletic director for game operations, in addition to the sports information duties.
Davidson oversees the entire athletic program at Catawba. He has also been responsible
for securing athletic advertising and sponsorships and has had significant roles in Catawba’s
Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival and the
year-end athletic ceremony. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the regional advisory committee for NCAA Division II
football (2002- 04). Davidson is currently the South Atlantic Conference AD liaison for baseball
and women’s basketball and chairman of the SAC Athletic Directors Council.
Davidson was also highly involved in the planning of the Hayes Field House and Shuford Stadium reconstruction. He also has
directed the highly popular Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic since 1996.
A former member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Davidson was chairman of the NAIA District 26 SIDs
and the Carolinas Conference Awards Committee for three years (1986-89). He was voted by his peers as District 26 SID of the year for
1987-88 and 1992-93.
Born in Statesville, but reared in Salisbury, Davidson graduated in 1977 from West Rowan High School, where he was a fouryear letterman in baseball, earning All-North Piedmont Conference honors as a senior.
Davidson earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Catawba in 1981, working as a part-time writer at The Salisbury Post during
his college years. He actually began at The Post as a 16-year-old sportswriter in 1975.
A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Davidson is president of the Westside Pool Association. He is also a member
of the PTA at Southeast Middle School.
Davidson resides in Salisbury with his wife, Toni, a registered nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital. They have three daughters,
Bethany (21), a senior at Catawba, Katie (18), a freshman at Catawba, and Carrie (13).

ATHLETIC TRAINING
TRAvIS ARmSTRONG, mS, ATC, LAT, PES
Travis L. Armstrong starts his fourth year as Assistant Athletic Trainer at Catawba College. In addition to his medical coverage for the Women’s Volleyball team, he also oversees coverage for
the Men’s and Women’s Swimming, and Baseball teams, which includes both home and away
practice and game coverage. Armstrong has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers
Association since 2000. He passed the national Athletic Training Certification exam through the
NATA Board of Certification in 2004. Along with being a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Armstrong also holds a national accreditation as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES),
through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Armstrong, along with the rest of the staff of Athletic Trainers, instructs approximately 20 athletic
training students in various educational components of athletic training. They also supervise the
students in the clinical aspects as they care for Catawba’s Athletes.
A native of Colorado Springs, CO, Armstrong earned a master’s degree in sports health care from A.T. Still University, formerly Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 2006. During that time, Armstrong worked as Head Athletic Trainer at Notre Dame Preparatory
High School, Assistant Athletic Trainer at Grand Canyon University, as well as Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Phoenix Road Runners
Professional Minor League Hockey team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Grand Canyon University in 2004 during which time he completed multiple Athletic Training and Orthopedic internships.
Armstrong and his wife, Christy, who is also an Athletic Trainer at Catawba, reside in Salisbury.
John D. Coble
Athletic Training Room
The John D Coble athletic training room is located on the bottom floor of the Abernathy physical education building and provides the medical care for 13 of Catawba’s 19 sports. Prior to 2002, when the Hayes Field House was completed, all athletic teams used this facility. Over the past 40 years, the athletic training room has been expanded and
improved to its current size of 1325 square feet.
Athletes receive injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation here. There are 7 treatment tables and 3 taping tables available. The facility provides state-of-the art modality treatment, which includes ultrasound,
electrical stimulation, diathermy and a hydrotherapy room for hot or cold whirlpools. In addition, a portion of the facility is
equipped with rehabilitation equipment such as a stationary bike, elliptical, stair stepper, Biodex total body gym, physioballs and free weights. Also included are two athletic trainer offices and a private Doctors exam room.

Head Coach
Jim Gantt enters his 15th season as head coach of the Catawba College baseball program in 2011. Under Gantt, Catawba has posted a
dozen straight 30+ win seasons and have made five appearances in
NCAA II Regional play. He has a career record of 479-263.
Gantt was honored as South
Atlantic Conference Coach of
the Year for the fourth time in
2008 as the Indians earned a SAC Championship. The squad
advanced to the NCAA II South Region Championship game
and posted a 43-18 mark. He was named the 2006 SAC Coach
of the Year after the Tribe went 47-14. Catawba won both
the SAC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA II South Region Championship game.
The Indians were ranked as high as #2 in the nation.
Gantt also earned SAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004
after guiding the Indians to a then school record 42
wins, including its first-ever berth in the NCAA II Regionals. In 2005, Catawba won the SAC title and went 35-19. The
1997 squad, his first as head coach, equaled a then second
most win total with 32.
Gantt also led the Indians to the 2002 SAC
Tournament title and
was named SAC Coach
of the Year for the
first time in 1999.

As an assistant for seven seasons, Gantt was a
key part of Catawba’s five straight seasons
with at least 27 wins from 1991-95). The Indians won back-to-back South Atlantic Conference championships in 1992-93 and was a
perfect 21-0 in league games in 1992 (38-7 overall). He currently serves as the coach of
Rowan County’s successful American Legion
team, guiding the team to the World Series
for the second time in 2009. Gantt was
named the North Carolina Amateur
Coach of the Year in 2002 after guiding
Rowan to a 43-2 record and a state
championship. As an assistant, he
helped the legion team to the 1996
Southeast Regional Championship,
advancing to the World Series in
Roseburg, Oregon.

Gantt, who graduated from Catawba in May 1989, with a bachelor’s degree in sports management, had an outstanding four-year career as a player for the Indians. He compiled a .297 career batting average. A third baseman, Gantt enjoyed his best season in 1988, as the Indians
went 27-8 and won the Carolinas Conference championship. He was named to the all-conference team after hitting .322, with a .482
on-base percentage.
Milestone Wins
Always a good contact hitter, Gantt
struck out only 28 times in 330 career atbats, while walking 47 times. He started 97
of 105 games, compiling 98 hits and 42 RBI.
An all-conference player at NewtonConover (N.C.) High School before graduating in 1984, Gantt was a .439 career
hitter for the Red Devils.
Gantt resides in Salisbury with his wife,
Adrian. Adrian has served as the head
field hockey coach at Catawba and an assistant with the softball program.

Michael Lowman
Assistant Coach
Michael Lowman is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach
with the Catawba College baseball program. Lowman previously
coached at Catawba from 2005-07. After a one year stint as an assistant coach at his alma mater, High Point University, Lowman returned to Catawba before the 2009 season.
In Lowman’s first season as an assistant
coach in 2005, he helped lead the Tribe to a regular season conference
championship and an overall record of 35-19. In 2006, the Indians had
a banner year by setting a school and conference record for wins in a
season by going 47-14 and winning the regular season and conference tournament championships. Catawba advanced to the regional championship game that season where they lost to the
eventual NCAA II National Champion Tampa University. The Indians reached as high as #2 in the national rankings that
season and finished the season ranked tenth overall.
In 2009, the Indians went 32-19 and once again qualified
for regional play by defeating Tusculum twice on championship Sunday to win the conference tournament and
earn the South Atlantic Conference automatic qualifier
for the Southeast Regional Championships. In 2010, the Indians finished with an overall record of 40-13 and once
again qualified for regional play by winning the conference tournament championship.
Prior to coming to Catawba in 2005, Lowman served as a graduate assistant at High Point University. As a player at HPU, Lowman earned All-Conference honors in his junior season.
Lowman also serves as the Head Coach of the South Rowan American Legion team. In his second season as head coach in 2010,
Lowman led his team to a Southern Division Regular Season
Championship, the team’s first since it was founded in 1996.
Lowman resides in Salisbury with his wife, Kelly, and son, Colin.

Seth Graham
Assistant Coach
Seth Graham is beginning his first season as an assistant coach
with the Catawba baseball program. He joins the Catawba staff
after serving as head coach at Wilkes Community College for the
past five years.
Graham started his coaching career at Wilkes CC as an assistant
coach in 2005 before becoming head coach. He has also served as
assistant coach for Mooresville Post 66 American Legion since 2005.
While coaching at Wilkes CC, Graham won a record 101 games while mentoring ten all-region players and four all-district performers. He coached one All-American and had one
player selected in the professional draft. Graham was named NJCAA Region X DII Coach of
the Year in 2009, guiding the squad to a 35-15 record, a conference title and a third place in
the Southeast District of NJCAA DII.
Graham played collegiately at Wilkes Community College as a pitcher. He finished up playing
at Mars Hill from 2003-05.
He resides in Mt. Ulla with his wife, Hillary.
Todd Miller
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Todd Miller enters his first season as an assistant coach at
Catawba. He comes to Catawba after a two year stint as an assistant at his alma mater, Hanover College. Miller began coaching
as a graduate assistant at Bluffton Univeristy and has also
coached the LIDS nationally elite Indiana Bulls for the past
three summers.
Miller played baseball and football at Hanover, graduating in 2006 with a degree in communications. He was a three-time all-conference pick in baseball, where he was team MVP and
captain. Miller also earned all-conference honors in football. In 2008, he earned a master’s
degree in business administration at Bluffton and for his work with the 2007 team he
earned the 2010 NCAA Award of Inspiration.
A native of Franklin, Indiana, Miller starred in baseball, basketball and football at Franlin
Community High School. He resides in Salisbury with his fiance, Leigh.
