Rewind Time
G HS Times
A lot of things
change in 18 years. From
growing up, to changing
friends, to walking across
stage to get your diplomas. We asked Savannah
Hittson what she would
like to rewind time to and
she said, “I would like to
go back to being in kindergaten. Everything
was easy and my biggest worry was how I
would get out of nap time. Now that I’m 18
and about to be finished with high school, I
would give anything to be back in kindergarten taking a nap.” Doesn’t everyone? When we
see little kids complain about nap time, don’t
you just want to be like.. No kiddo.. you’ll wish
you had these days back once you’re a grown
up. We also asked Katelynn Sands what she
misses most about being a little kid, and she
said “I miss being so carefree. Life was easy
and I never had homework.”
Even though life may seem hard at times, just
remember this is what is shaping you to be a
successful person. That’s all any of us want in
life. Stay positive and good luck to all of the
2016 GHS graduating seniors!
By Aaliyah Durham
A Letter from Mrs. Hotary
Dear Seniors,
This is your last year in highschool, and it’s almost over! At this crossroads, you are obviously
thinking about the future and what it will bring.
Every person in this graduating class has a different plan or a hope for what his or her life will be
like, and in many ways, the future is completely
open to each and every one of you! There is no
way to predict what life will bring. That’s the
exciting and scary part of being alive. Sometimes
you will plan for the future, and that plan will
have to be abandoned. Life is truly unpredictable! However, superficial changes in the “plan”
really don’t matter, because it’s what you’re made
of that makes your life a success. As a teacher, I
care about my students. I observe you every day,
planning for your futures, thinking about your
daily challenges, your relationships, your schoolwork. I hear your conversations, even when you
think I don’t. I worry about you, I laugh with
you, and I love every minute of it! AND as soon
as we get to know each other really well, you
leave, and a new batch of students begins the
process again. After you’re gone, I often think
about you, and I hope you’re doing well. Because
I’ve encountered so many students on the brink
of their adult lives, I often think about the formula for a happy life. How can some people be
successful and others not? What can you do to
make your future bright, even if you don’t have
much, or if you get hurt or disappointed by the
challenges of life? I think it boils down to a few
key elements, and these things have to do with
yourself, how you view the world, and how you
approach challenges. It’s all about the attitude.
Key concept: Really, you can’t control other
people, and if I’ve learned anything at all, it’s
that you can only choose to be the best person
for yourself and for those you love. So, here’s my
“formula” for success:

Senior Advice
We asked the seniors if they had any advice for the underclassmen-- here are their rules and guidlines for making it through high school
We asked GHS senior Haley Randolph if she
had any wise words of advice for the underclassmen and she said, “Never forget your
charger, That’s your number one priority.” She
also said to remember that a test is like a box
of chocolates, you never know what you’re
gonna get… So always make sure you study
and if you take chemistry, go to tutoring!
“Chemistry is definitely one of those classes
you can’t slack off in. You need to make sure
you have good study habits and don’t miss a
lot of school.” The older you get the harder it
is to catch up in your classes even
if you only miss one day. Just do
your best and make sure you come
to school because once your grades
fall it is extremely hard to get them
back up. She also said she has one
last piece of advice for the underclassmen and that is, “never leave
home without a snack.”
By Haley Randolph
My biggest piece of advice I would give
underclassmen is try to make high school as fun
as you can. Don’t be upset when you lose friends
because unfortunately that happens in life. Not
everyone you lose is a loss. Also, don’t disrespect
your teachers. They are doing their best to make
you a successful adult and they have to deal
enough with mouthy teenagers. Just do your work
and be nice to them because most of the time they
will be really cool to you if you treat them with
respect. You have four years here, make the best
out of it.
By Bailee Cox
A few pieces of advice to
survive throughout high school are
to 1: have fun but don’t forget about
your school work. Don’t wait until
last minute to start on a homework
assignment because you won’t get a
good grade. 2: It’s important for you
to do what makes you happy. You
My biggest piece of advice is to just stay out of the drama. don’t have to study every minute of
your life. Set aside some time to have
Focus on you and work hard toward your goals. Unforfun with your friends. 3: Know your

be there for you once you are handed that diploma. Life worth. Make sure you don’t start seeing

don’t know your value.
can do is to focus on you and be the best you can be!
By Jacklyn Farmer
Questions! Always ask questions and try to learn
as much as you can. I don’t believe that intellectual pursuits can be placed on a spectrum of value.
As long as you love something and you want to
learn more about it, you can be passionate about
anything. The world is vast, and there are an unlimited amount of interesting places and experiences to pursue! Travel! Meet people! Read! Learn
something new! Create! Curiosity is something
that will never end, and it won’t let you down.
Curiosity isn’t limited by age, money, or health.
It’s continuous; it keeps giving. Keep seeking, and
keep exploring!
Goals (and the willingness to work to achieve
them)! It’s important to make money to support
yourself, and it’s important to seek opportunities that will allow you to be what you decide to
be. But the goals themselves are not the stopping
point. You have to work so hard! I can’t stress this
enough. You have to be relentless. You MUST
be willing to keep trying. Realize that everyone
experiences set-backs, and it’s okay! Don’t fall into
the trap of believing in failures because there is
no such thing as failure. When something doesn’t
work out, it is always a learning opportunity rather than an excuse to give up. Successful people are
not just the lucky ones. They are the people that
are absolutely focused on their goals. They keep
trying, no matter what. Be this person!
Kindness! This might be the most important
thing. Truly, there aren’t enough generous people
in the world. I don’t mean fake nice, and I don’t
mean weakness. I mean a genuine, tangible concern and respect for others. When people see your
kindness, your respect, your willingness to apologize, and your genuine interest in their feelings,
they will respond to you.
By: Kaitlyn Sands
We all like to demand respect from others, and
we like to think about ourselves, but consider
how amazing the world would be if we thought
about other people first! I don’t mean “people”
in a general sense. I mean every single person
with whom we come into contact. This is hard!
But, each person is valuable, and each person
has something to offer (including you). Don’t
allow yourself to be swayed into thinking about
people as faceless masses or “others.” This is a
challenge to you to be above the fray. Challenge
those that want to lump people into groups in
order to categorize them or mistreat them. Be
better than that! Be open-minded. Be a good
person, and also be kind to yourself.
As always, I hope the best for you! You are all
amazing in your own ways, and you have so
much to offer the world. As I write this, I’m
thinking about all of my sweet students, past
and present. Please take advantage of the opportunities that you have. Be happy! Be grateful!
Be brave! Challenge the status quo! Sometime
in the future, when you think back to your days
in high school, remember that your teachers
love you and are proud of what you’ve become.
We live for your successes, and we are so excited
for this next chapter of your lives. We think
about you fondly, even years later, and we are so
thankful that we’ve had the opportunity to be a
small part of your incredible lives.

Last Successful Season
Under Hunt
Robin Davis and Jaye Chalk having
a pre-game warmup toss.
In the last season under Head Coach
Randall Hunt, the Lions were off to a rough start
going 0-3. The Team scored a total of 6 points
in the first 3 games while allowing 22 points.
The Lions were not looking good. But suddenly
there came a turn around the Lions are on a 4
game win streak and do not plan on stopping
any time soon. Outscoring their opponents 3612, the Lions are hopeful to bring a state ring
home and celebrate with Coach Hunt as a way
to say goodbye.

Gravette Softball
The lady Lions are off to a rough start going 1-2. The Team lost some great players to
college last year, but the GHS Softball Team
plans to exceed expectation. The lions have
had a tough time keeping opponents from
scoring. The Lions have let 13 runs in 3 games
but with great players, like senior Jaye Chalk
and Robin Davis, the Lady Lions will be fine.
With some more practice and experience
they should be right back to being a 4a state
contender.

Track
After having a successful state track
meet in last years track season, the Gravette
track team intends to come back with an even
more successful season. The team has a few
key members that will help lead them to an
even better season, like two-year track member, Derer Cravens. Derek is a participant in
the 4x4 relay race, and has had much success
in that particular event. How does he intends
to better in his event? He stated very confidently, “To get better in my event is simple. All
you need to do is get faster and run often staying in conditioned is critical”. He’s definitely
been putting in his hours said the high school
track coach; Jana Hardgrave. The GHS Track
is off running to win state metals for Gravette.

GHS Senior Spotlights
Jackson Soule signed to play baseball with
Butler College in El Dorado, Kansas. Jackson helped
lead this years’ GHS Baseball Team in several wins.
We sat down with Jackson and got the major details-- “I had quite a few schools looking at me. Central Missouri, Harding University, and Lyon College were a couple I was interested in. The reason
I picked Butler is because it’s a great junior college
and will hopefully get me into a Division 1 school in
two-years.” He advises GHS underclassmen looking
to play college baseball that, “It will hard work, but
put in the work every chance you can in order to get
better.”
We look forward to watching Jackson grow
and we hope in two years to see him in a Division 1
school playing some more college baseball!
Best of luck, Jackson!
This year one of GHS’s very own Jordan
Neeley was signed to The Citadel which is a
Military Academy in South Carolina.“The Citadel is an amazing school with a great location
in Charleston South Carolina, and they have a
fantastic business program,” said Neeley. “I have
always wanted to go into the military and run
track in college. The Citadel gives me the opportunity to do both. That’s why I chose it over other
schools.” She is a little nervous about living that
far away from her family and friends, however
she is excited to start this new chapter and learn
how to be on her own. Jordan also said she was
excited for the training and the competition the
college offers, because she loves to be physically
active. “It has always been a dream of mine to
run college track and now I have the amazing
opportunity to run Division 1.” We are so proud
to call Jordan a GHS Alumni and we can’t wait to
see what the future holds for her!
Senior volleyball player, Amanda
Pinter, has signed to Southwestern College
in Winfield, Kansas. When asked what she's
most nervous about signing she replied, "I
am most nervous for meeting new teammates and connecting with them for the next
four years." Playing with a team she's never
been around will be difficult, but she is keeping a positive attitude. "I am pretty excited
about it. everyone that's at SWC had to work
hard and it's a completely different level.
nobody made the team by chance. We all
had to work for it." College sports is a whole
new level of competition and Gravette High
School is very confident that Amanda will do
great!
Congratulations, Amanda, for accomplishing such a task of being a college student
athlete. Thank you for being a great student
athlete for Gravette High School.

Prom King and Queen
Dancing, dresses, dates, the crowning of Prom King & Queen and drama, all
memories from prom. Walking through the
doors, the attendees of prom were asked to
vote for the candidate of their choice. Couples
and singles were listed on the ballot and half
way through prom, the DJ asked the Seniors to
come vote once more, due to a three-way tie
between candidates. Another fifteen minutues
passed, and the DJ comes back with the announcement that Jace and Jordan Jeter were
your GHS Prom King and Queen. Jordan and
Jace are exemplary students at Gravette High
School. Jace a state officer for FBLA, and
Jordan, recently signed to the Citadel in South
Carolina for track and field. Dylan Gruver
says, “I voted for Jace and Jordan because
they’re such a cute couple and good representatives of our school.”
The screams that erupted when the
king and queen were announced showed that
people agreed with Dylan. Jace Russ, the
King himself said, “It’s a memory I will never
forget.” Jordan says that it was unforgettable
and that she, “Couldn’t have asked for a better
King.”
The runner-ups to the king and queen
can’t be forgotten either. William Dahl,
Heaven-Leigh Grace Ivers, Emmanuel Garcia,
Alicia Marchbanks, Jackson Soule, Savannah Hittson, Jordan Shaw, Trista Bien, Luke
Summerford, Kinsley Hurtt, Dakota Wilmoth,
Katelyn Regalado, Thomas Reynolds, Amanda

Hannah Fordyce should all be congratulated
for their courage!

Last Prom
Doors opened at 8pm at the Sierra Grand Hall at Horton Farms in Gravette. This year’s GHS Yule Ball Prom
was as enchanted as Harry Potter’s Winter Dance and
it definitely was adorned with beautiful and handsome
lions dancing in the magical environment. About
250 students and staff enjoyed the chiffon white netting with twinkling lights cascading from pillars on
the dance floor. New to the prom was a photo booth
area that had a floating picture frame for students to
stand behind and help themselves to selfies. The back
section of the hall was filled with a feast of delicious
red and white garnished food. Juniors this year put it
together that morning at 5am and the sleep workers
did an outstanding job. Senior, Bailee Cox, says the
entrance was the best part! Senior, Gage Woodcock
with many others felt that the music choices could
have been better. Sam Roth and Caleb Velez had only
compliments for the decorations. “The Junior Class
did good,” reflected Sam. Micayla Hendricks and the
participants want to thank the prom committee for all
their hard work, “You did an amazing job!”

New Year, New Laptops
According
to CNBC (2015),
“Chromebook sales
now account for
more than 1/2 of
all devices sold for
US classrooms.”
Gravette Schools
has joined the high techtrend this year by giving select students Chromebooks. They are
being used in blended-classrooms that allow
teachers more ability to individualize student
assignments. Senior Gage Woodcock isn’t a
fan of the laptops. She stated, “ that a lot of the
websites she attempts to get on for class research are blocked.” But most people seem to
be grateful to have the technology devices.
The Chromebooks can be taken home to
use and they are easy to use. Several textbooks
are available on them reducing the textbook
cost. Chromebooks allow student access anywhere there is internet access. Cori Overstreet,
who wasn’t assigned a Chromebook, stated,
“The laptops are cool and I can’t wait until
everyone has one to use.” Gravette Schools
has a 4-year pan to have all GHS students on
Chromebooks in order to improve technology skills and save money on textbooks. For
this being Gravette’s first year trying out the
Chromebooks it has gone smooth and GHS
should evolve with today’s society’s trend of
making everything available online.

42.9% I don’t care either way.

Club Achievements
This year GHS clubs acccomplished quite a few achievement this
year. DECA went to state in Little
Rock to compete and FBLA also went.
We had several people place at State.
Both teams were led by Mr. Johnson.
He also accompanied a group of ladies to a coference held by Walmart.
It was full of motivational speakers
encouraging young women to step up, and become leaders in the world. In total, 45 ladies went.
GHS is so proud of all the students who represented us at these competitions and conferences.
Congratulations to everyone who placed in Deca and FBLA! The hard work of GHS business
students has not gone unrecognized.
The Key Club is an orgaization led by Mrs. Reiff focusing on serving the community
through projects. At the beginning of this school year, they held a Powderpuff Game to help raise
money for UNICEF. They also had a Thanksgiving Food Baskets for Habitats for Humanity, in
which they won first place receiving $2,500 from Champions for Kids for the community work
in the state of Arkansas. The club participated in the Gravette Christmas Parade with the local
Kiwansis. April 30th they cleaned and cleared the Beaver Cemetery in Bella Vista. The club has
done so much to help our community out this year, but perhaps the most amazing thing they dwill
do is holding a Pixar Movie Night, giving all of the proceeds went to Lane Killion, a Gravette
High School student battling Lukemia in late May. It is truly a selfless thing for them to do that.
A big thank you to everyone who helped support the club and make this a strong year of giving
back to our communities. Key Club at the Champion For Kids Leadership Conference

Good Luck Class of 2016
Good luck, farewell, best wishes for you.
These words are just the start
Of all the nice things we’d like to say.
Everything comes from our hearts, truthfully.
You’re such an amazing person,
We’ll miss your goofy ways.
We’ll remember your sense of humor
That cheered us up on many days.
You have a dream to follow,
We support you with excited hearts.
We all hope you’re glad to close this
Chapter in your life
And hope you enjoy a new start.
