Ryanair makes up with Stansted
in new 10-year deal
Four new routes announced from Essex airport...
R
yanair has
agreed a new
long-term
growth deal with
Stansted Airport’s
new owners M.A.G
after previously
cutting back services
from the Essex
airport.
MAG and Ryanair
have agreed a new
10-year deal which
will see the low-cost
carrier increase its
passenger count at
the airport, starting
with new routes to
Lisbon, Bordeaux,
Dortmund and Rabat,
Morocco.
Ryanair currently
carries more than 13
million passengers a year from the
airport and hopes to increase this
to 18 million by 2018 and 21 million
by 2023.
The airline had previously
scaled back its operation from the
airport after seeing fees rise under
previous owners BAA.
"Ryanair is pleased to have
agreed a new 10 year growth deal
at London Stansted with M.A.G.
This deal will see our Stansted
traffic grow by more 50%, from
13.2m in 2012 to more 20m p.a.
in return for lower costs and more
efficient facilities at Stansted,” said
Ryanair’s chief executive Michael
O’Leary. “This agreement proves
how UK airports can flourish when
released from the dead hand of
the BAA monopoly and is the first
dramatic initiative by M.A.G to
reverse seven years of decline,
during which Stansted’s traffic fell
from 23.8m to 17.5m.”
Stansted Airport has suffered
in recent years with passenger
numbers and routes, and has
services mainly offered by low-cost
carriers.
In addition to the new routes,
MAG also has plans to upgrade
the terminal with a GBP80 million
investment.
"The new long term agreement
between Ryanair and MAG at
Stansted shows that competition
really does work, and it represents
great news for both passengers
and UK businesses,” said MAG’s
chief commercial officer Ken
O’Toole. Click here for full story
easyJet eases travel agent bookings
e
asyJet has introduced a new
online booking capability for
travel agents with Amadeus.
The low-cost carrier has become
the first to become a ‘light ticketing’
carrier with the technology company
with agents eventually able to book
the airline with the same booking
flow as traditional carriers.
Amadeus will combine traditional
shopping, booking and back office
flows with real-time fares and a full
ancillary offering through easyJet’s
XML. For agents it will mean a more
streamlined search and workflow
and integrated sales reporting.
“Working with travel agents in the
most effective way is fundamental to
our strategy of servicing the higher
yield business travel market and our
move to become a light ticketing
carrier within Amadeus is a key step
in driving adoption and bookings
from agents,” said Andrew Hodges,
director for sales, distribution and
business at easyJet. Click here for

Tourism Australia signs longterm STA deal
Agreement signed in London for multi-target strategy...
T
ourism Australia and STA
Travel has signed a new
AUS$9 million (GBP6m)
Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) to promote youth travel to the
country.
The new three-year agreement
follows several collaborations
between the two including Tourism
Australia’s ‘Best Jobs in the World’
competition, which will be leveraged
in the first year of the MoU to
promote working holiday packages.
The two will work together on a
series of marketing activities and
hope to expand the MoU to state
and territory tourism partners.
It will include promotion to the UK
market as well as Germany, France,
the US, Japan and Singapore.
The agreement was signed in
London by Tourism Australia’s new
general manager for the UK Denise
Von Wald and STA’s CEO John
Constable.
“The success of our recent
collaboration on ‘Best Jobs in the
World’ has already demonstrated
strong commercial results, and
we hope to see this performance
continue as we formalise and further
extend our partnership with STA
Travel,” said Von Wald.
Constable added: “Australia is a
core part of STA Travel’s business
and whilst the short term partnership
agreements have delivered strong
results, we see a longer term
approach as much more beneficial
to driving more youth business to
Australia.” Click here for full story

Greece tourism “most robust than estimated”
T

in Greece this year as the country

new year.
International tourist arrivals to
the country are up 10% with tourism
receipts up 15.5% from January to
May compared to last year.
Tourism is thought to be one of
the main drivers behind Greece
posting a better GDP performance

dropping 3.8% instead of the
predicted 4.6%.
Museums and archaeological

“After a long period of turbulence,
instability and negative publicity,
the latest official figures are very
encouraging, confirming that
the tourism industry remains of
vital importance to the country’s
economy,” said Iossif Parsalis,
general manager of MARKETING
GREECE, which has been set up to
