them to appeal. ..Definitely,"
said Foye. "Their numbera are in

immediate telephone calls or

The group discussed various
poaatbilitiea for the future of the
site. moat of them eontingent on
the c.ounty appealing. Goldberg
stated his belief tlhat "we eou!d
win it on appeal" and get the
current zoninc, R·lB-C, which
calla for lower density condominiums.
Roy Dahl noted that the developer bad asked in early February for the city and GEAC's
support for a proposal for bask!ally the same density buildfntrl, as c.ondominiums rather
than apartment&. The proposal
bed included contributions for
parkland development and some

at the time, would be preferable
to the high density apattments
without the sweeteners.
Is the appeal winnable f Dahl
aalced. Given the judge's deedsion,. would it not be praettcal to
consider negotiating witlh the
developer! Pedlapa a high rise

condos rather than apartments.
Appeal and Win
uoensity is the issue," Goldberg reiterated. If the developer wins the appeal he won't
bother with condominiums and
their complicated legal regime;
rentals are easier t ... deal with.
As evidence !or this at&tement,
Goldberg cited the statements
of the developers at the February meetinc.
Ed
Schilling
noted
tha t
GEAC has taken a position for
low density, low rise development on the Sunrise Property.
He also noted that the rental
market is glutted throughout
the Washington area and in
Greenbelt, and wondered how
soon Sunrise would really be
built. "I believe we could win it
on appeal.'' he said. "and aet
the current zoning-low density
condos."
The eontensua ot the meetin6
waa to put as much pressure aa
posaible on the county officials
to appeal the deciaion.
