Auxiliary
2011
ANNUAL REPORT
Although 2011 was a rough year financially for most people and most organizations,
Massena Memorial Hospital, its employees and auxilians managed to maintain their excellence
as “Champions of Care.” Our hospital expanded their care to the Louisville Clinic and our
auxilians raised even more funds than in 2010. With these funds we were able to donate our
$10,000.00 pledge to the Massena Memorial Hospital Foundation, $5,000.00 to the Telethon
towards a Bone Densitometer and $13,335.00 for a Tran venous Pacemaker- Medronic and a
Doerges Difficult Airway Blade for C Mac, both life-saving pieces of equipment.
Thank you to all you auxilians who have worked so diligently baking, sewing, selling
tickets, manning health clinics, phone and volunteering in our hospital. Because of you we are
able to maintain our quality health care in the St. Lawrence Valley.
Respectfully submitted,
Helen Murray, President

Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Activities:
Hospital Week May 9th – 13th
Our annual hospital week kick-off reception
was held in the MMH Courtyard. The Auxilian of the
year Kay Romeo was announced at the reception. The
MMH Auxiliary was very visible donating time to the
MMH Telethon and Blood Drive held on Friday the
13th of Hospital Week.
Massena Chamber of Commerce
The Auxiliary keeps a supply of brochures and
a calendar of events at the chamber office for people
new to the community who may be interested in volunteering.
Health Screening
Each year Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary helps with registration at the hospital
for screening of cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, bone density and blood typing. We also
worked in 2011 setting up at health fairs and passing out pertinent information.
Patient Gifts
Small gifts and tray items were distributed to patients in the hospital, the Oncology
Department and the Dialysis Center. Thirty-six Auxilians worked each holiday to create
handmade items to be given out on Valentine’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Approximately 80 items were given out each time, with an attached tag wishing each
patient a Happy Holiday.
Scholarship
This year the Auxiliary was pleased to award the two $1,000.00 scholarships to Colin
Burley, who is attending Utica College pursuing a degree as a Physical Therapist and Kristin
McKeel, who is enrolled at Albany College of Pharmacy studying health services.. The money
is divided by the number of years of the program. Rosalie Hamel, Rosalie Smith, Betty Barnes
and Lois Nicandri were on the interview committee. Casey Small, hospital employee who is
attending SUNY Canton to pursue her RN degree, received $500.00 toward expenses.
MMH Foundation
The Auxiliary is a big supporter of the MMH Foundation, raising funds to donate our
$10,000 pledge each year and helping where needed, such as the MMH Foundation
Radio/Telethon, Golf Tournament and the “Thanks for Giving” Tea. The Auxiliary also donated
$5,000.00 at the MMH Foundation Radio-thon for the Bone Densitometry Machine.
WHALE (We have a little emergency)
This car seat identification program continues in Massena under the guidance of Marilyn
Bain and the WHALE committee. Information has been presented at local health fairs and
insurance offices. Each newborn at Massena Memorial Hospital receives a packet of the
WHALE material.
Organ Donation
Charlene Hazelton heads up this program, speaking at local service clubs and supplying
information to the local papers and health fairs.
Teddy Bears
The Auxiliary continues to donate Teddy Bears to the
obstetrics for newborns, pediatric patients and for senior
patients as deemed appropriate. The Auxiliary purchases the
Teddy Bears and sews on a label designating the Auxiliary as
its donor. This program has been well received by the patients
and staff. Last year 342 Teddy Bears were given to patients.
All around the Hospital
In addition to the Information Desk, Gift Shop Staffing and
Beverage Cart, the Auxiliary can be seen setting up Christmas
Trees in the Cafeteria, Levine Outpatient Center, the Board
Room, the front entrance and ICU & OB waiting rooms.
Kathy Adams and Holly Derouchie volunteer doing spring
planting out front and seasonal decorating near the front
entrance. Our auxilians also make headgear, pillows
and blankets for cancer patients, along with cloth bags
for patient wheelchairs and walkers. We held one
Work Bee in 2011. On September 27th at the
Community Center 19 auxilians were present, it was a
great success. Several people have donated fabric for
pillows; it is greatly appreciated. The Work Bee was
organized by Kathy Adams and Holly Derouchie to
complete and start sewing projects for the hospital.
A total of 342 teddy bears, 512 pillows, 68 bags and
62 hats have been given to the hospital from
November 2010 – November 2011. We have gotten
several positive comments about the pillows and
teddy bears. The auxilian’s also lent a hand at the
annual Telethon and also volunteer at the Blood
Donor Clinics.

2011 Gift Shop Report
Presented from Barb Kennedy, Manager/Buyer
February -- I took over as Manager/buyer of the
gift shop on February 14, 2011.
We went to our first Wholesale Show at
Turning Stone Casino in February. I met new dealers,
ordered new lines that are selling very well. Bought a
few things “cash n’ carry” and have re-ordered those
things three times.
March – We had a 20% sale the week of March
14 for St. Patrick’s Day.
th
April – The week of April 18th, we had a 20%
sale for Easter. Barbara Gardner and Shirley Laition
donated about 16 or 18 decorated Easter Baskets to sell
in the gift shop. All but 4 small baskets sold. I took
the 4 to the St. Regis Nursing Home the Friday before
Easter.
May – We donated about $60.00 our cost in Merchandise to the telethon. I also worked
the phone lines at the telethon.
June – Father’s Day Sale, June 16th and 17th. On June 9th Debbie Manning from
Gouverneur brought in Candy Bouquets on Consignment. I didn’t know how they would go
because I thought they were a little pricey. She has been doing well with them to date. June 1st
& 2nd I had a garage sale at my house and brought old things from inventory and sold $90.00.
August – donated water fountain ($26.95) to Foundation Golf Tournament. August 22nd
– 26 we had End of Summer Sale, 30% off. We made $1,122.90. August 29th, we donated a
Nature’s Garden Water Foundation, valued at $26.95 for Meals On Wheels Radiothon.
th
September --11th getting carpet cleaned and all vents cleaned in gift shop.
October – October 24th & 25th Kay Romeo and I attended the HANY’s Conference in
Albany. We made up a basket to take for a drawing. Our cost $25.00. Christmas basket
donated to Lions Club, our cost $35.00. October 28th & 29th, we had a Pre-Christmas sale
upstairs in Conference room. We sold $550.72 upstairs and $225.29 in gift shop for those 2
days.
November – We donated about $120.00 (our cost) of OLD toys, puzzles, games, balls,
bubbles, coloring books to Toys for Tots. November 5th we donated onesies to Maternity to give
to newborns. The onesies read (Born at Massena Memorial Hospital) and were pink and blue.
November 8th, Jill Power headed up a team of 5 of us that changed the gift shop over to
Christmas. We had many compliments on the shop and its contents. Thank you Jill. Also this
same week, MaryLou Francia changed the front window to a beautiful winter scene. Everyone is
still in awe of the window. Thank you MaryLou.
December - December 7th, I held a Christmas Basket Raffle at our Christmas Luncheon.
I sold $141.00 worth of tickets with Mona Violi winning the basket. The proceeds of the raffle
were sent to the Margaretville, NY Hospital Auxiliary, as they lost everything in a flood caused
by Hurricane Irene. We sent a check for $150.00 on December 10, 2011. December 19th thru
the 24th we had a sale on Christmas items at 30% off and 50% off all Christmas tree ornaments.
We sold $2,993.43 that week. On the first day from 10 -1, I sold over $695.00. I was so excited;
I had to call, my husband, Helen Murray and Kay Romeo. Then from 1 -4, Phyllis Marlowe sold
over $290.00. Shop is empty. December 27th, we donated about $22.00 our cost for items to be
put in basket for 1st baby of the New Year.
All in all, I am happy with our sales for 2011 and hope I can increase that number for
2012, now that I have a little experience behind me. Thanks to all the workers and volunteers for
help.

Barbara Kennedy, Manager/Buyer
