Tony Hawk was a hyperactive boy. He was difficult at home
and at school. But when Tony was nine years old, his brother
gave him a cheap skateboard. Tony began skateboarding right
away and it changed his life. Tony’s parents wanted to help him
use his extra energy, so his father built a ramp near their house.
Tony started practising skateboarding for six hours a day, every
day. By the age of 14, Tony was a professional skateboarder.
He had a salary of $100,000 a year from skateboarding
competitions before he finished school. But in the early 1990s,
skateboarding wasn’t as popular as in the 1980s and Tony had
no money.
A new competition called X Games began in 1995 and made
skateboarding popular again. Tony entered this competition and
won. He became the most famous skateboarder in the world. In
1999, Tony made his own video game – Pro Skater – and it was
very popular.
Tony Hawk still skateboards every day and continues to
compete in the X Games. The secret to his success is his love
for the sport.
