Adel’s second Annual Oktoberfest
Bring out the beer steins and get ready to dance the polka
on Saturday, September 24, at the Adel Community Stage
& Pavilion at 10th and Main St. The Wayne Ripke Band
will play old-time polkas & waltzes from 4-7 p.m., and
from 8-11 p.m. the Heartbeats will play classic rock, blues,
and a wide variety of dance music. Beer vendors will serve
some special Oktoberfest beers and food vendors will have
a variety of offerings. Admission is only $5 per person, so
come and enjoy an evening of fun, music and beer.

yoga classes begin next week
Yoga classes will begin again in Adel on Wednesday,
September 28 and meet each Wednesday evening for six
weeks, 5:45-6:45 p.m. Adel is very fortunate to have an
excellent instructor, Stephanie Clemens, come out from
Des Moines to teach this class. Fee is just $55 for all six
sessions or $10 to attend any of the classes as a drop in. Yoga helps to build strength, regain flexibility and teaches
relaxation and breathing techniques to help alleviate stress. Give it a try for just $10. For more information call Mary

adm ecology club to plant trees
The ADM High School Ecology Club has won a $5,000
Trees for Teens Grant sponsored by the Iowa Dept. of
Natural Resources Forestry Bureau, MidAmerican Energy,
Black Hills Energy, Alliant Energy, Iowa Bankers Association, Trees Forever, Iowa Tree Farm Committee, and the
Iowa Woodland Owners Association. The ADM Ecology
Club will have 103 trees to plant on Saturday, October 1,
so the Club would appreciate any members of the community volunteering to help us plant. Please bring spades
or shovels, and wheel barrows. We will start about 11:30
a.m. If you have any questions please contact Anita Vasto,
Ecology Club Sponsor, at 515-993-4584, ext. 1700.
adm volleyball fights against breast cancer
ADM will host a 'Fight for the Girls' breast cancer
awareness night on October 4 in Adel during its volleyball
matches with DCG. The Tigers and the Fillies will compete
on the court, but fight together against cancer in a match
to promote awareness and raise money for breast cancer
research.

Culligan Water will hold a salt sale and free pancake
breakfast on Saturday, September 24 from 8-11 a.m. at 120
Nile Kinnick Drive. Salt is on sale for $4.
shooting event for permit holders
The Dallas County Sheriff's Office and other local law
enforcement agencies will sponsor a shooting event for
Dallas County Permit to Purchase/Permit to Carry holders as well as any interested citizens of Dallas County on
Sunday, September 25 at the Des Moines Rifle & Revolver
Club in Van Meter for $20. All proceeds will benefit the
Shop with a Cop program. Permit to carry holders can take
this opportunity to re-qualify. You must be 18 years or older
to be on the grounds the day of the event. If you are 18 to 20
years of age and wish to participate you must have a legal
guardian or parent present to participate in any event.
Shop with a Cop provides an important service to the
children of Dallas County. This program allows children
within the Dallas County community to partner with a uniformed officer to shop. The intent of the benefit shoot is
to raise enough funds to provide for all children recommended for the program.

A Public Auction will be held at DeSoto United Methodist
Church, 421 Dallas St. on Saturday, September 24. Lunch will
be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and auction begins at 1 p.m.
Some of the items up for bids include Blue Ribbon pies, 4
quarters of beef, 4 sides of pork, desks, plants, dog and cat
food, quilts, stained glass window, pickup load of seasoned
firewood and lots more.

Washington Township will hold its 13th annual Pork BBQ
and Pie Auction on Saturday, September 24 from 5-7 p.m.
BBQ Pork, Scalloped Corn, Green Beans, Pie/bars will be

If you love baseball, plan to come to the Adel Public Library
on Monday, September 26 for a special program and display
showing the extensive collection of baseball cards, photos,
and art work collected by John Liepa, historian and Professor Emeritus, DMACC. View the display from 5-7 p.m. then
attend a presentation by Liepa, dressed as Iowa's first major
leaguer, Cal McVey, at 7 p.m. in the library community room.
The program and display are free and open to the public.
Another special program is set for Thursday, September 29
at 7 p.m. Local author and journalist, Colleen Bradford Krantz
will discuss her book "Train to Nowhere: Inside an Immigrant
Death Investigation." Krantz also wrote and co-produced the
award winning documentary based on the book. "Train to Nowhere" is the true story of 11 illegal immigrants who died in
their pursuit for better lives in the United States.
The library's next garage sale will be Friday, September 23
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, September 24 from 10 a.m.
