Paula Deen visits post, promotes new book

Anxiously awaiting the arrival
of Paula Deen, Soldiers and their
Family members carried copies of
her new book, hoping to get it
signed by the famed author and
chef.
While visiting the Exchange,
Deen signed copies of her new
book, “Paula Deen Cuts the Fat:
250 Recipes Lightened Up,” Dec. 1,
on Fort Hood.
“This book is about a three year
labor of love,” Deen said. “I’m living proof that if you make enough
small changes they can render big
results.”
After being diagnosed with Type
2 diabetes, Deen said she finally
became serious about her health.
As a result, her new book discusses
healthier recipes by swapping out
ingredients.
For Deen, however, her visit
comes with more than a book signing. It gave her an opportunity to
express her gratitude for military
members and their Families.
“It’s wonderful to be able to
see the servicemen and women in
groups so I can thank them. I wish
I could go up to everybody and say
thank you. Thank you for what you
do because you keep this country
safe and allow us to do what we
do.”
Deen, who visited Fort Hood
previously, said her first visit left a
lasting impression.

and I was so touched the first time
I came here, I promised I would
be back,” Deen said. “If it were
left up to me, I would do nothing
but spend my time visiting military
bases because there’s not enough
‘thank you’ in us to thank all the
people that keep this country safe.”
For the fans, Deen’s visit proved
to be special, as well.
“We’ve been fans of Paula since
forever, and I have a special book
that’s for my daughter and I wanted
her autograph so she could have
it for life,” said Leighann Temple,
a military spouse. “We just love
Paula.”
Scheduled to commence at 4
p.m., a few fans started lining up
early to meet Deen. Amongst them
was Temple’s mother, who arrived
at the Exchange at noon.
However, despite the long wait,
Deen’s visit provided Temple and
her Family with more than a signed
book.
“For all of the Families here, we
have so many spouses that are experiencing Christmas without their
loved ones that are deployed, so for
her to come and spend time with
us is a little special,” Temple said.
“I don’t have the opportunity to
spend Christmas with my husband
this year, so maybe we can just
open up one of her books, get a
recipe and have a little comfort in
our own home.”
