1PH - 8 GA WIRE / 3PH - 10 GA WIRE
1PH - 6 GA WIRE / 3PH - 8 GA WIRE WARNING!
A separate earth ground wire of the same conductor size as the input power is required to be connected to
the chassis of the machine. This ground wire is required for operator safety and for proper operation. This
ground must be supplied from the main plant ground at the service entrance, and should be routed in the
same conduit as the input power to the machine. A local cold water pipe, or ground rod adjacent to the
machine cannot be used for this purpose.
Input power to the machine must be grounded. The machine will not function properly on ungrounded power.
The maximum voltage leg-to-leg or leg-to-ground should not exceed 260 volts.

Connecting the Mini Mill to Power
The Mini Mill can be powered from either 3 Phase 208 Wye Power (Neutral Grounded) or Single Phase
240V. In either case, a separate ground wire of the same size as the main conductors must be provided in
the power cable.

Main Circuit Breaker
1. With the main circuit breaker in the OFF position (rotate the shaft that connects to the breaker
counterclockwise), hook up the power lines to the terminals on top of the main circuit breaker.
Connect the separate ground line to the ground bus to the left of the circuit breaker.
NOTE: For Single Phase operation, only terminals L1 and L3 of the circuit breaker are
used. L2, the center connection, should be left open.
CAUTION! Make sure that the main circuit breaker is in the OFF position BEFORE
changing the following transformer connections.
2. T5 is a small transformer mounted on the power supply assembly next to the main circuit
breaker. This transformer supplies 24VAC to energize the main contactor. This transformer has
two input connectors located about two-inches from the transformer that allow it to be connected
to either 240V or 200V. If the incoming power is 220-250 VRMS, use the 240V connection. If
the incoming power is 187-219 VRMS, use the 200V connection. Failure to use the correct input
connector will result in either overheating of the main contactor or failure to reliably engage the
main contactor.
3. The main power transformer is located at the bottom-right corner of the control cabinet. This
transformer supplies Single Phase 115V power to the cabinet. It also has two different input
connections located at terminal board TB2. If the incoming power is 187-215 VRMS, connect
wire 74 to the 208V position (center). If the incoming power is 216-250 VRMS, connect wire 74
to the 240V position (left).

4. Turn the main circuit breaker to the ON position (rotate the shaft clockwise). Apply power to the
control by pressing the Power-On switch on the control panel. Verify that the Fault Indicator on
the 320V Power Supply (located above the main power transformer) displays the number “1”,
which signifies a normal power-up sequence. Next, verify the DC bus voltage on pins 6 & 7 with
a voltmeter. The voltage should read approximately 335VDC if powered from 240V, or closer to
290V if powered from 208V. If the voltage is not at least 260VDC, call the Service Department.
This voltage will not be displayed on the diagnostic data page of the display.
5. Turn the main circuit breaker OFF by rotating its shaft counterclockwise. Close the door, lock
the latches, and turn the power back on.
E LECTRICAL O PERATION
The Mini Mill operates the same as the other Haas Vertical Machining Centers, with the exception that the
spindle motor is driven by an amplifier on the Servo Drive assembly. A closed-loop Vector Drive function is
still performed, with the amplifier being controlled by the C-Axis output of the Mocon, as is the same for other
Haas machines. The amplifiers get their 320V power from a power supply specially designed to operate
efficiently from either Single Phase or 3 Phase power.
The 320V Power Supply limits the inrush current into the supply at power-on, and continuously monitors the
input voltage for a drop-out condition. It also provides the drive to the 15 Ohm Regen Load mounted on top
of the cabinet. It does this by sensing the voltage as the spindle motor decelerates and connecting the
Regen Load across the 320V output bus to absorb the excess motor energy.
Fault Display
The 320V Power Supply has a Fault Display that displays different faults sensed by the power supply. Any
of the faults will cause the power supply to disable the DC bus. The Fault Display will continue to be illuminated with the fault code until the power to the control cabinet has been turned-off. This is the only way of
resetting the power supply.

In addition, the supply cycles through the codes “8”, “0”, and “1” during the power-up sequence. “8” is
displayed when power is first applied to allow verification that all segments of the display are working properly. “0” is next displayed to indicate that the supply has begun charging the output capacitors. This takes
approximately 5 seconds. “1” is next displayed to indicate that the capacitors were successfully charged.
Unless a fault occurs, the “1” code remains displayed while AC power is applied.

I NSTALLATION R ECOMMENDATIONS
NOTE: These Installation Recommendations are to be used in conjunction with those
in the Operator’s Manual. Material supplied here is given specifically for the
Mini Mill.
Machine Coolant (if equipped)
The Mini Mill coolant reservoir has a capacity of 24 gallons. The coolant reservoir can be filled in two
different locations:
•The base has cutouts in the right and left sides. Coolant can be filled through these cutouts.
•With power removed from the machine, lift the coolant pump from the base. Fill with coolant as
necessary.
Levelling
The Mini Mill needs only to be rough-levelled. Fine levelling of the base will not affect the cutting performance of the Mini Mill and is not necessary. Use a machinist’s level placed on the mill table while roughlevelling the machine.
M AINTENANCE
Spindle
The spindle needs no extra lubrication during normal use. The spindle is lubricated through the Lube Panel
(see Operator’s Manual) as part of normal machine operation.
O PTIONS
Floppy Drive
Located on the side of the control pendant, the floppy drive allows easy uploading of machining programs
using standard PC floppy discs. You can download to disc for backup storage or DNC directly off the disc.
BT Tooling
Your Mini Mill can be reconfigured to use your existing inventory of BT tooling, if you prefer.
4th-Axis
Boost productivity with a fully integrated Haas 4th-axis Rotary Table.
Coolant Pump
Supply coolant to your machine with an auxiliary coolant pump. This improves tool life and allows higher
cutting speeds.
