The kids are back in school - so please remember to drive
carefully and observe the 25 mile an hour speed limit in River
Run.
Once again we would like to remind you to fill out an ARC
form, found in this newsletter, and submit it before you begin
your project.
Also, remember that advertising signs are not allowed – so
please ask your contractor not to put them on your property and if
they do – please remove them.
To help prevent crime, keep your garage doors closed, don't
leave bicycles and other items unattended and remember to lock
all cars in your driveway.
If you have tree branches in your front parkways that are
obstructing the sidewalk, you can call the City of Naperville,
Department of Public Works at 630-420-6095 to have the branches

MAKE IT A
SAFE YEAR FOR
THE KIDS
Schools are back in session.
Whether they’re walking,
taking the bus or riding their
bikes, take steps to help
ensure our children’s safety!
DRIVING TIPS FOR PARENTS AND
TEENS
• Watch all crosswalks, speed zones
and yellow buses. Kids often dart
across the street when you least
expect it, so always double and triple
check crosswalks before proceeding.
Be sure to obey posted speed limits in
school zones. When a school bus
stops with its red brake lights flashing
and/or its stop sign raised, you must
stop from either direction until all kids
are safely across the street and the
bus lights stop flashing (unless the
school bus is stopped on the other
side of a multi-lane or divided
highway).
• “One text or call could wreck it all.”
You wouldn’t drive while distracted,
right? Help your kids get smarter
about driving while distracted,
particularly texting while driving as the
combination can be deadly. Have a
conversation with your kids about the
dangers and encourage them to stay
focused while driving. Then keep the
conversation going. Always expect the
unexpected.
BUS IT BACK TO SCHOOL
If your children will be riding a school
bus, try to make sure they understand
this information.
• When the bus arrives, children
should stand at least three giant steps
(6 feet) away from the curb to be sure
they are seen by the driver.
• If children have to cross the street in
front of the bus, they should first walk
on the sidewalk or along the side of
the road until they are at least 5 giant
steps (10 feet) ahead of the bus.
Children should be able to see the
driver and the driver see them. They
should wait for a signal from the driver
that it’s clear to cross.
• Children should never walk behind
the bus where they may not be seen
by the driver.
• Children must stay away from the
wheels of the bus at all times.
BIKE IT OR HIKE IT BACK TO
SCHOOL
Either way, here are some tips to help
your kids get smarter about safety:
Bike it back — Kids should:
• Always wear a helmet.
• Be sure there are reflectors on
pedals, frame, and wheels.
• Remember that bright colored
clothing helps to increase visibility.
• Secure a flashing light to the rear of
the bicycle to increase visibility.
• Never text or talk on a cell phone
while biking.
• Follow the Rules of the Road and
always ride on the right side in single
file.
Hike it back — Kids should:
• Always walk on the sidewalk. If there
is no sidewalk and kids have to walk
in the road, they should ALWAYS
WALK FACING TRAFFIC.
• Wear bright colored clothing to help
increase visibility.
• Cross only at corners or marked
crosswalks.
• Walk in groups as they are more
likely to be seen by drivers. There’s
safety in numbers.
• Stop at the curb, or the edge of the
road.
• STOP AND LOOK LEFT, THEN
RIGHT, THEN LEFT AGAIN before
crossing the street.
• Never text or talk on a cell phone
while walking and/or crossing the
street.
BE SEEN — BE AWARE — BE
PREDICTABLE
As children return to classrooms this
fall, safety should be a priority for
every family. It is important for parents
to stay up-to-date on safety
precautions and to share the
information with their children. Have a
conversation and keep the dialogue
going.
Help your children get smarter about
safety. Share this with family and
friends so they can help ensure the
safety of children.

Backpack
Safety
One thing that people rarely think about is the proper
way to wear a backpack. Improper use of backpacks
can cause neck, shoulder, and back discomfort if not
selected and worn properly.
lean to one side. Use waist belts to shift work to the
trunk and hip. If a hip/waist strap is available, be sure
to use this as well as it will lessen the stress on the
shoulders. In order to keep the load in the backpack
close to your body, be sure to keep the shoulder
straps tight.
By the end of their teen years, more than 50% of
youths experience at least one episode of low back
pain. And new research indicates that this increase
may be due, in part, to the improper use of
backpacks.
The further a load is away from your child's back, the
more the back muscles have to work. Adjust straps to
keep the pack snug against the back. To minimize
strain on the shoulders, look for features like wide,
padded shoulder straps, and air-filled cushions.
Tips and Recommendations
Proper position of a backpack is that it should hang
just below the shoulders with the bottom resting in
the curve of the lower back. Never let it hang more
than 4 inches below the waist.
As a new school year begins…
It is recommended that individuals carry no more
than 15% of their body weight on their backs. For
example, a child weighing:
• 50 lbs. should carry no more than 7.5 lbs.
• 80 lbs. should carry no more than 12 lbs.
• 100 lbs. should carry no more than 15 lbs
• 130 lbs. should carry no more than 19.5 lbs.
• 150 lbs. should carry no more than 22.5 lbs.
Be sure to distribute the load. Wear shoulder straps
over both shoulders. Slinging the straps over one
shoulder increases strain and can cause your child to
Other Items to Look for When Selecting a
Backpack
• Use multiple compartments as it will evenly
distribute a given load.
• Arrange items so they don't shift around.
• Place heaviest items closest to the back.
• Use a wheeled backpack for heavy load and long
distances.

the happy gardener
make a difference with a garden
Article Source: Heather Prince
The Growing Place
The Pleasures of Fall
eptember heralds the beginning
of autumn and all its pleasures.
Cooler days send us outdoors to
enjoy. We harvest our vegetables and
herbs and find new ways to cook with
them. Pumpkins arrive as well as
gourds, squash, and cornstalks. Fall
flowers bloom, offering a last hurrah
for pollinators before winter snows.
S
September is the perfect time to
refresh containers with cheerful frosttolerant flowers like pansies, mums,
calibrachoa, cabbage and kale. Mum
season is a special time at The
Growing Place. We’ve planted more
than 6,000 early, mid, and late season
blooming varieties. They are big,
healthy and filled with buds, ready
for your garden beds and containers.
Why not give butterflies a boost?
Mums and asters can be an important
source of nectar for late season
pollinators. Among the best types of
plants to encourage them are those in
the aster family. These composite
daisy-like flowers pack a big punch in
nectar and many varieties will bloom
into November. Our native asters tend
to be clouds of small pale lavender or
white blooms on two to three foot
plants. However, perennial mums,
goldenrod, and perennial sunflowers
are also good choices. Often, these
plants will create a nice splash of color
in your autumn garden even through
several frosts. There is a large range of
sizes and blossom colors in this group
of plants and they can thrive in full to
part sun, in average soils. When
planting, tuck them in with other
perennials and shrubs that bloom at
different times to maximize your
flowering season. Asters will be a
mass of foliage throughout the
summer before bursting into starry
bloom, so they tend to be a good plant
to blend into a bed. To control size,
create a bushier plant or delay
flowering, pinch back the plants until
about mid-July.
September also sees the beginning of
the harvest as pumpkins and gourds
begin to become available. We
celebrate the harvest with the Fall
Festival at The Growing Place in
Aurora on September 21 and 22 with
two days of hayrides, children’s crafts,
live music and treats. In October, we
celebrate Pumpkin Palooza at the
Aurora location on October 5. We will
create giant pumpkin art to support
local charities. Each giant pumpkin,
weighing between 300 and 600
pounds, is decorated by our creative
Growing Place staff and benefits a
charity. Vote for your favorite
pumpkin and its charity will win a
donation. Pumpkins will be displayed
through the end of October, so visit
and vote often.

Pet Tales
I RESCUED
MY BEST
FRIEND!
By the Naperville Area Humane Society
CALLING All Animal Loving Kids
he Naperville Area Humane Society offers many opportunities for kids to learn about and get
hands on experience with pets. Our Pets & Kids After School Program begins on September
16 and runs throughout the school year. This six-class program is offered to kids 8-12 years
old on Monday afternoons from 4:00-4:45 p.m. They will learn how to hold and handle animals
properly and even get the opportunity to give a dog a bath!
T
We talk about animal body language and communication and then “see” what the animals are
telling us on a behind-the-scenes shelter tour. They get to the nitty gritty part of having a dog or cat
and help with cleaning a dog kennel and a cat cage. There is also an entire session devoted to dog
training using positive reinforcement techniques. The children will have an opportunity to use their
newly acquired skills when teaching a shelter dog the “sit” and “down” commands.
A veterinarian comes to visit and they learn about what animals need to be healthy and what can
happen if a pet's health is neglected. They even listen to a dog’s heartbeat through a stethoscope after
watching the veterinarian give the dog an exam. At the end of the six classes, the kids receive a
completion certificate along with a goodie bag containing treats and photos of them with the
animals.
Each six-week session has a limit of ten children, so sign up today! Registration costs only $55. If
you have any questions, please contact Terri Hancock, Humane Education Manager at 630-420-8989,
ext. 117 or register online at www.napervilleareahumanesociety.org.
This may or may not be the right time for you to adopt a new furry family member or maybe you
just want to see if your child’s interest is serious before making a commitment to an animal.
Naperville Area Humane Society’s education programs are a great place to start!
Hi, I’m Cooper!
Being a black kitten is tough. It seems like all the other colors get adopted
and we are left here waiting and waiting for a family to love us. Some of us
came at 2 months old and seem to be growing up in a cage! To help get us
and other youngsters adopted, NAHS has created a "Spring the Juvies"
promotion. From September 3 to 16, 2013, the adoption fee for kittens age
4 months to 1 year will be only $25. Please come visit us at the shelter and
give us a chance today!

The River Run Reporter
September 2013
I would like to take a moment to recognize the
great Raptors swim and water polo season!
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who stepped up and
worked the meets. There were many who went over and above to
make our season successful. Thank you to all the board members and
committee chairpersons who put in tireless hours behind the scenes to
set everything up and keep it running smoothly, and their families who
support their efforts. Thank you to the coaches who help our kids
improve and have fun at the same time.
I would also like to recognize the support we get from the River
Run Club and our sponsors. Without it we could not sustain the program. Lastly, thank you to
all the athletes. When they achieve a personal best or have a smile on their face, it makes all
the efforts worthwhile.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining our Raptor family, please
encourage them to be part of this great organization.
Respectfully, Franz Weyandt
River Run Raptors President

Bow
We are so looking
forward to hearing
from you!
We bowl during the 204 School
District calendar. We begin at
9:15 a.m. every Tuesday from
September through April. The
League honors all breaks taken
by the School District. This is a
non-sanctioned league which
means we are all there for the
fun and camaraderie that a
morning out with the gals can
bring! So, if you are an ace
bowler OR never picked up a
bowling ball, we would love to
have you join us. There are 4
ladies on a team, so you can
either get 4 friends together or
join by yourself and we will
place you on a fun loving team.
Joining the team is a great way
to meet new friends and
neighbors and catch up with
friends we missed over the
summer.
