Come one, come all to the 22nd North Coast Challenge at
St. John Medical Center Saturday, Sept. 1. The 5- mile race,
kid’s runs and 2-mile walk are an annual Westlake highlight that
has raised $1.7 million for community causes over the years.
“This has always been a way for us to do something positive and give back to the community. It’s all about health and
fitness. You can have all the success you want in life, but if
you don’t have your health it doesn’t mean much,” says founding Race Director Bud Hagy. “This event, along with the kid’s
races, is a great opportunity to invest in your own health and to
develop lifelong habits of healthy living.”

SJMC Golf Outing Supports Hope Fund
250 golfers had a great time at Mallard Creek Golf Course Aug. 18 as they
played to raise funds for the St. John
Medical Center Hope Fund.
Almost $10,000 was raised to support this fund that assists hospital employees when they have emergency needs.
“We are just overjoyed and grateful
for the enthusiasm of our staff in providing for their peers when there is a time
of need. We especially thank organizers
Ron Streng and Gary Styles who put in
so much time and effort in organizing
this event,” said Sr. Kendra Bottom, SJMC
Pastoral Care. “They put in so much work
and they doubled the amount from the
previous year. We are so grateful.”
“Gary and I would like to thank
everyone who donated, sponsored and
volunteered to make this outing a great

Sarah Smiles…
by Dr. Louis Malcmacher of The Healthy Smile
Let me tell you a story about a
patient of ours that we’ll call, “Sarah”.
Sarah had come to our office almost
in tears. She had a couple of teeth in
the front that were nearly black with
cavities. She had waited over a year
since she first noticed the problem
because of a bad experience she had
with previous dentists. She told us
the last dentist she went to sat her
down in the chair and just started
to work on her without telling her what he was doing or
how much it would cost. At the end of the appointment,
they gave her a bill that just shocked her. She hasn’t been

to a dentist since. Her teeth
were turning black and she
didn’t want to go to another
dentist because she figured
the same thing was going
to happen. Sarah came into
our office and we were able
to help her by removing the
darkened portions of her
teeth and replacing it with
beautiful porcelain veneers.
But what really made Sarah
pleased was that we discussed everything with her
in advance. We were able to
work within her schedule
and her budget to give her
the kind of smile that she
always wanted.
Our patients know
that we are skilled in providing their dental needs.
Our patients, like Sarah,
really are pleased to know
that we really specialize
in communication. Plain,
old talking to people about
what they want, how much
it will cost, how long will it
take, and how it will look
- that’s what we are really
known for. We never start
any dental treatment until
you know exactly what it
will cost, how much your
insurance will pay, and how
long it will take. In that way,
you can adjust your budget
and your schedule to get
the very best dentistry has
to offer. In our office, communication is as important
as the actual dentistry that
you are going to have. This
gives us a chance to get to
know each other, become
friends, and develop a life
long trust which is really
what a doctor-patient relationship should be all
about.
If you would like to
come in and talk, please call
us for a free consultation at
440-892-1810. We are happy to help you in any way
we can. As always, our goal
is to help you develop and
maintain a healthy smile.

Meet Our Littlest Philanthropists…
At five years old, Charlie Mittendorf is already making a
difference in the lives of others. Charlie decided to donate the
toys he received during his 5th birthday party to the Pediatrics
Unit at Fairview Hospital because he “just wanted to help others.” It was a wonderful idea and the toys will be a welcome
comfort and lift the spirits of the children who receive them
during their hospital stay.

It’s been a successful summer for the Community West Foundation with a whirlwind of
fundraising events over the last few months.
As the Foundation’s momentum continues to build, they find that they have supporters
in every age group! Here are just a few of our generous local children who donated gifts and
time to help others. We hope you find them as inspiring as we do!
Celebrate the birth of your children born at Fairview Hospital
and experience the Zoo like you’ve never seen it before. A variety of
education and entertaining activities have been scheduled throughout this fun-filled day. Radio Disney will be there with Clowns, Face
Painting, Fingerprinting, Magicians, Jugglers, Childhood Nutrition
Experts, Demonstrations and much more! All proceeds will provide
every baby born at Fairview Hospital the opportunity to take home
a Sleep Sack to promote peaceful and safe sleep.
The spirit of giving to others and volunteerism run deep
in the Reidy-Norton families. As loyal supporters of children’s
health and well being, they have donated their time and helped
raise funds for the needs of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
at Fairview Hospital.
Katie Reidy and Debbie Norton are a mother-daughter dynamic duo and are long time ambassadors of the Community Helping others is a lesson that Charlie is learning early in life from his parents, Ginger and
West Foundation and Fairview and Lutheran Hospitals. Always Charles

willing to lend a helping hand, they are members of the Gift of teaching their son the importance of compasLife Committee, where they served as co-chairs of the event for sion and giving to others. Way to go Charlie!
many years.
Debbie Norton and her husband, Brad, are
parents of triplet daughters, Taylor, Sydney, and
Anna, who were patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) twelve years ago and received the specialized care needed to get them
through those early critical weeks. The Nortons
are among thousands of families grateful for the
NICU that provides the highest quality of care in
our community.
Volunteerism has been an important part of
the family’s values. The Norton trio Taylor, Sydney, and Anna are now tripling their efforts and
contributing their time and talent to good causes.
From volunteering at Westlake Safety Town, to
Boy Scout Camp, to service on student council
at St. Bernadette School, to setting up a craft station for kids to enjoy at A Day at the Zoo event
for Fairview Hospital, the girls are donating their
most precious of commodities – their time.

Can be the Answer to
Someone’s Prayers
You Can Be the Answer
to Someone’s Prayers
Each of us has the power to answer
someone’s prayers. Helping others through
philanthropy can take many forms, and
whatever your gift – large or small, time or
treasure – there is an opportunity to help.
A creative way to arrange a gift is
through a donor advised fund at Community West Foundation – an easy, effective
tax efficient vehicle that helps you manage
and carry out your charitable giving.
You may want to give back to the community, share your philanthropic values
with your children or create a highly organized center for all your gifting activities. A
donor advised fund provides all of this and
more so that you can focus your time and
energy on making a difference.
In 2011, the holders of the 55 Donor
Advised Funds at the Community West
Foundation showed incredible generosity
in making gifts that totaled $2,000,000.00
to 83 agencies. Their commitment and concern inspires us all!

University Hospitals Fertility Center
West Opens at Crocker Park
University Hospitals
(UH) is extending its fertility services to Cleveland’s
west side families in a comfortable and conveniently
located facility adjacent to
the Crocker Park shopping
mall. UH Fertility Center
West features a full range of
advanced fertility services
as well as the complementary services of Maternal
Fetal Medicine specialists,
OB Imaging and Genetic
counseling.
The UH Fertility Center West is an extension of
the UH Fertility Center at
UH Ahuja Medical Center. “We are very pleased
to open this facility for
our patients on the west
side,” says Bryan R. Hecht,
MD, a fertility specialist at
UH Fertility Center West.
“Fertility treatment often
involves a large number of
relatively frequent but low
tech visits. For that reason,
we believe that developing
satellite practices closer to
home for our patients helps
eliminate at least one of the
barriers to care that many
fertility patients face.”
The new 1,400-squarefoot facility features a patient-focused design with
a contemporary, spa-like
décor and houses exam
and treatment rooms as
well as ultrasound services.
It also includes a full service sperm lab for sperm
testing, insemination and
sperm freezing.
The new Crocker Park
office will nicely complement the existing facilities the UH Fertility Center currently operates in
Beachwood (at UH Ahuja
Medical Center) and at UH
MacDonald Women’s Hos-
pital in University Circle.
In addition to the
Fertility Center, the new
Crocker Park office will
also provide Maternal Fetal Medicine, Genetics
and Imaging services. The
fertility experts available
at the center include Dr.
Hecht; Brooke Rossi, MD;
and William Hurd, MD.
The UH Fertility Center West opened to patients
on Wednesday, Aug 15.
For more information on
the treatments provided at
UH Fertility Center West,
please call 440-808-5100.

Westlake Topples North Ridgeville
Nothing like a homeopener win to bring out the
Demon pride!
The Westlake High
football team blasted to a
solid start with a 26-7 win
over visiting North Ridgeville Friday at Lou Duchez Field.
Junior
quarterback
Kent Axcell directed the
victory with two touchdown passes to senior
Shaun Turk, who scored
three TDs in the victory.
They connected on a 72yard strike in the first quarter right after a long play
was negated via penalty.
Axcell found Turk again
in the second quarter with
a 15-yarder. Danny Strodbeck added the final score
with a one-yard run in the
fourth period.
For North Ridgeville,
speedy Paul Sonego, a
West Shore Conference
sprint champ, broke loose
for a 66-yard scoring scamper in the first period.

Eagles Fly High
in Season Opener
Two of Cleveland’s
perennial football powers
met in a big season opener
at Lakewood Stadium Saturday night as St. Edward
topped the visiting Glenville Tarblooders, 42-14.
St. Ed’s hard-hitting
defense wore down Glenville’s speed after an early
Tarblooder lead. In the end,
Eagle defenders forced
five Glenville turnovers.

Shoremen Start Season with Win
Revenge is a powerful motivator! Avon Lake
High started the 2012 football season with a strong
42-28 win over arch-rival
Avon Friday night on the
Shoremen home field. It
avenged last year’s loss to
the Eagles and gives Avon
Lake a solid start to a playoff run in 2012.
The hard-hitting, hardfought decision saw the
team’s battle to a 21-21
halftime tie. Avon Lake
then pulled away in the
second half. Five pass interceptions turned in by the
Avon Lake defense made a
huge difference in the outcome – two by Joe Pappas
and one each from Jace
Russell, Max Seipel and
Jimmy Hessel. The five
picks tie a team record for
one game.
Hessel, a senior running back as well as a defensive back may have
been player of the game for
the Shoremen by adding
three TDs on offense. One
was a 77 yard punt return.
Quarterback
David
Winkel had a big night going 12-23 passing for 210
yards and three TDs.
After losing last year’s
opener to Avon, the Shoremen went on to a fine
season but barely missed
the playoffs as one of the
smallest Div. I schools in
the state. This year’s turnaround gains huge momentum for Avon Lake.

Great field position
gave quarterback Ryan Fallon breathing space as he
rushed for 90 yards, one
touchdown and two more
via the airways. Dwayne
Anderson added 80 yards
on the ground and had two
scores.
