Management
Gymnastics WA continued to see membership growth in 2014,
with an increase in athlete membership for the sixth consecutive
year. This increase was from 11506 in 2013 to 11969 in 2014. GWA
also experienced a significant growth in technical membership
due to the introduction of the new coaching framework and the
benefit of GWA waiving the technical membership fee for first
year beginner coaches. Although club membership only increased
by one club, there was interest shown throughout areas of WA for
the development of new clubs in 2015. With fifty percent of our
clubs being either regional or remote, GWA continues to look at
different strategies to service these clubs. With the continued
roll out of the Club Talk initiative in 2014, this allowed for more
opportunities to connect with more clubs with the use of IT
technology.

Throughout the year the GWA Board continued to ensure good
governance throughout the association, a complete review has
been completed of all policies, the development of a GWA Board
Succession Plan and the GWA Board undertook an ASC/DSR Board
Review. The Board Review will assist the Board moving forward
to further identify improvement and planning into the future.
Our financial controls and budgetary processes ensure that GWA
maintains a high level of services within our revenue constraints
and in 2014, GWA recorded a surplus (full details in the outlined
financial report) which continued to allow for the planning of
the equipment upgrade in Hall 1 of the SGC in 2015 and strategic
activities.

The GWA Strategic Plan for 2014 - 2016 was released and provides
the framework for the strategic direction of the organisation
for the next three years and beyond. The importance of the
organisational values needs to be a priority as we deliver the
framework to meet the targets of the strategic objectives. Being
able to achieve the GWA objectives could not be possible without
the funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation and
Healthway and Gymnastics Australia funding for Participation
and Men’s High Performance.
On the senior international stage at benchmark events, GWA
athletes had outstanding successes. We had two WAG gymnasts,
Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian in the World Championships team
and the Commonwealth Games Team. Amy Quinn, as a first year
senior in RG, also competed as part of a Commonwealth Team
and World Championships Team , and Jayden Cooney from TRP
represented Australia in DMT at the TRP World Championships.
In 2014 the Youth Olympic Games were held in China and Abbie
Watts was selected to represent Australia at the event.
GWA would also like to acknowledge our partners and sponsors,
with special mention to the Department of Sport and Recreation,
Healthway (Go for 2 & 5) the City of Vincent, Gymnastics Australia,
Venues West and the Western Australian Institute of Sport, whom
without GWA could not deliver programs, strategic activities and
events throughout 2014.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the Board of Management,
staff, Technical Committees, presenters, volunteers, coaches
and judges who all work towards the ongoing success of the

Active After-school Communities Project
Through a partnership with West Coast Gymnasts and Active After School Communities
two in school programs were conducted to determine the impact of cost on ongoing
participation in gymnastics following involvement in the AASC program. Four schools
were targeted and 101 students participated in the project. Key findings indicated that
offering a free trial period for potential members was seen as a benefit to parents and
that there was equal take up of ongoing participation opportunities irrespective of the
different cost models. With the AASC program winding up in 2014 it is hoped that the
new Sporting Schools Program scheduled for release in 2015 will provide for further
opportunities to form strong school-community-club links.
School Events & Activities
Gymnastics Western Australia conducted programs promoting the
LaunchPad philosophy in 19 schools reaching 2390 participants.
This was a 272% increase in participants from 2013. The 2014 Go
for 2&5 Interschool Challenge was successfully conducted with
schools participating in MAG, WAG, RG, AER and Cheerleading.
The event had 324 participants and attracted 214 spectators.
Inclusion Opportunities
GWA GymAbility continued to provide active participation opportunities for adults
with disabilities. Twelve adults attended classes throughout the year with a further
three opportunities provided for come and try sessions specifically tailored to suit the
needs of participants. A proposal was developed to expand the program into an offsite
format to ensure the sustainability of the program moving forward. Partnerships were
formed with two new stakeholders in 2014 to expand the community engagement in
this program.
LaunchPad
Affiliated clubs continued to work through Gymnastics Australia’s
LaunchPad initiative with the initial phase of the program
drawing to a close at the end of 2014. Although not all clubs have
completed the requirements for certification to be approved,
32 clubs have been actively working thorough the initiative.
Chetkovich Cup
The 2014 Chetkovich Cup was conducted with a similar format to the inaugural event in
2012 with 36 individuals/groups competing in six teams vying for the Chetkovich Cup. The
gymnastics community did support the event but sadly there was not sufficient support
from the outside community to meet the expected ticket sales.
Membership Overview
Membership continued to grow with 11, 969 registered athletes and 522 registered
technical members in 2014. This demonstrates an increase in membership of 4.9%.
There were 41 affiliated clubs and seven associate members. The following diagram
represents membership growth over the past four years.
Go for 2&5
Go for 2&5 Gymnastics WA GymFest was conducted in a reinvigorated format with
eight clubs providing displays throughout the event featuring 65 participants and
208 people attending and participating in the event. The support of Healthway to
allow this opportunity for participation was paramount to the success of the event.
Go for 2&5 Gymnastics WA GymFest is set to continue in this format for 2015.
Go for 2&5 Gymnastics WA Champion Club of the Year Project
Twenty six events across six Gymsports were included in the 2014 Go for 2&5 Gymnastics
WA Champion Club of the Year. Points were allocated to each club across the events
depending on the successful ranking of their athletes at each event. Points were
then allocated to each club on the Go for 2&5 Leader Board on the Gymnastics WA
website. This proved to be a success with our clubs and members, with positive
feedback on the initiative.
Workforce & Performance Coaching Grants
During 2014 GWA provided funding for High Performance grants to assist applicants
working in the high performance stream in their professional development. Some
examples of the funding were attendance at national training camp and FIG judging
courses. Higher level athletes that competed at the 2014 Australian Championships were
also sent vouchers to put towards attending a coaching and or judging course. GWA
also provided Workforce Development Grants to individuals to access courses within
administration, coaching or judging and the clubs via issuing of all affiliated clubs
access to a Beginner Face to Face Coaching course for 50% off plus recognition of clubs
that demonstrated increased membership growth with an additional discounted course.
Workforce Project
GWA focused strongly on Work Force development during 2014 to assist clubs with
the changes to the coaching framework by allocating funds to the Workforce Project.
This focus included subsidising of a Presenter & Assessor (P&A) Course, the first to be
held in Australia. Twenty participants from various Gymsports attended three days of
intense learning where they completed six units of a Cert IV in Training & Assessing.
This course has now provided an increased number of potential P&A’s to deliver the
coach accreditation courses. Following the course, our new P&A’s costs were subsidised
through the Workforce project so the trainees could be co presenting at courses for
the second half of the year.
With the new coaching framework in mind and the impact it was having on clubs, GWA
reduced the cost and minimum number of participants required on all Intermediate
coaching courses scheduled in the second half of 2014. This aided the running of the
courses.
Event Volunteer Strategy
Gymnastics WA registered as a member of Volunteering WA to assist in recruiting and
retaining event volunteers. New mediums were used to recruit volunteers outside
the gymnastics community including Seek Volunteers & Volunteering WA Newsletters.
Seven new Announcer’s were engaged for the GWA Go for 2&5 State Championship events
for 2014. Volunteering WA are forming strategies with GWA to approach universities
to recruit volunteers such as the use of volunteer posters & booklets created in 2014.
Go for 2&5 GWA Conference
The 2014 Go for 2&5 GWA Conference was held in January with 168 members attending
a variety of presentations across the weekend. Gymnastics Australia provided a staff
member to facilitate a series of National workshops and to man a resource stall which
was well received by all members.
Education Overview
2014 saw a busy year for services and development with the roll out of the new Coach
Education Framework. A total of 338 members attended Education opportunities with
226 attending coaches’ courses and 112 attending judging courses.
These courses would not have been successful without the valued support of a host of
members taking up the challenge of presenting courses and workshops. Gymnastics
WA also hosted the first Presenter and Assessor Course held in Australia with 20
members attending.
Member Benefits
Preparation continued to ensure clubs were prepared for the imminent re-launch of
Gymnastics Australia’s Quality Assurance Program with a series of club and regional
visits conducted. Four club workshops were conducted in 2014. These were tailored
to meet specific Club Development goals that were identified through the National
Membership Review conducted by Gymnastics Australia in 2013. A total of 46 members
attended the workshops offered. A club information session was offered to discuss
new Gymnastics Australia initiatives scheduled to roll out throughout 2015.
As a member benefit, Gymnastics WA engaged HR Plus to provide support to all affiliated
clubs. A further information session was held to provide clubs with specific information
in relation to this new benefit.
Website Review
A revamped website was launched with the support of Gymnastics Australia. The
roll-out was successful with a significant improvement in accessibility of information
provided to all members.
Excel
High Performance
GWA undertook a DSR High Performance review with the four Olympic sports. The
review recommendations will assist GWA in delivery appropriate outcomes with the
development of the HP Academy in 2015.
The GWA Board after exploring many avenues, followed the recommendations of the
2011 GWA Review to restructure the MAG HPC program into a club based program. High
Flyers Trampoline and Gymnastics Club was selected to take on the program and is
nationally endorsed by GA and GWA as the Men’s HP Program in WA.
GWA secured partial access to Arena 2 at HBF Stadium to ensure ongoing support for
and success of the WAIS Program.

State Gymnastics Centre Facility Plan
GWA commenced planning the upgrade of equipment within the State Gymnastics
Centre. The GWA Board’s decision to invest heavily into upgrade of the State Gymnastics
Centre is from feedback from the community to have the “very best” for our athletes,
have the opportunity to host international events and be able to showcase gymnastics
to the wider community.
The commencement of the plan is for Hall 1 with the primary benefit being for our
WAG and MAG community. The upgrade will allow the athletes to have the very best
equipment for the best possible change of success at events and allow the growth of
participation based events.
The new Hall 1 equipment plan and equipment supplier was implemented after
consulting leading industry experts on equipment and design choice. The plan is to
be able to conduct the 2015 Go for 2&5 State Championships on the new equipment.
Awards Night
The 2014 GWA Awards Night was held in the WA Italian Club on Saturday 21st February
2014. The annual dinner is held to recognise achievements of the gymnastics community
in WA for the previous year. With 195 attendees present, the night was well supported
from various clubs, officials and GWA staff. Comments such as “the best Awards Night
yet” were received from numerous members of the community.

GWA Board Review and GWA Succession Plan
The GWA Board undertook an Australian Sport Commission (ASC) and Department of Sport
and Recreation (DSR) Board Evaluation in 2014. The evaluation review identified how
the GWA Board performed across key categories of board performance and identifies
opportunities for improvement. The GWA Board will be looking at implementing the
evaluation plan in 2015.
The GWA Board discussed the implementation of a GWA Board Succession Plan to ensure
its continued effective performance, good governance and risk management. The GWA
Board completed a Skills Matrix to confirm the skills, knowledge and interests of the
GWA Board and discuss what further skill set would enhance the knowledge and skills
on the Board and commenced development of a Succession Plan.
Membership Review
As part of Gymnastics Australia’s strategic direction, GWA was involved with a review
of the sport’s membership model. The objective of the review is to analyse the existing
membership model of the sport and provide alternative options that will safeguard the
ongoing sustainability of the sport. The review will involve a financial and workforce
audit and this work will continue in 2015.
Upskilling the GWA Workforce
GWA continued to offer volunteers the opportunity to attend Scoring and Floor Manager
courses throughout the year. The Workforce Project Initiative provided the opportunity
for selected technical members to attend a Presenter and Assessors course, which
will enable GWA to be able to have a pool of presenters for the Coaching Education
Framework courses over the coming years.
As part of the DSR Club Talk initiative, GWA was able to offer professional development
opportunities in several software programs which allows GWA staff to upskill and
further enhance the day to day operations of the organisations. Steve Turpin and Ruth
Gibbons were selected to attend the DSR / Australian Institute of Company Directors
Advanced Not-for-Profit Governance program.
GWA also planned in 2014 for further professional development opportunities for the
Gymsport Technical Committees. This professional development will be rolled out in 2015.
Funding Opportunities
GWA was successful in achieving three funding opportunities in 2014. GWA received
the Organisational Sustainability Program funding for 2014/2015 – 2016/2017 from the
Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and has accepted an offer for a further two
year sponsorship with Healthway for 2015 and 2016.
GWA also received an Annual DSR Grant for a Targeted Marketing and Communication
Project which commenced in December 2014. This project will provide;
A framework in which GWA can determine current enterprise capacity and capabilities,
support GWA in improving member acquisition and retention and further the enterprise
professional development of GWA personnel to ensure enterprise strategies are continued
following the completion of the project.
Offering opportunities and benefits for Club and Associate members
As part of GWA’s commitment to offering further opportunities and benefits for
members, GWA signed an agreement with HR Plus to provide GWA member clubs with
a cost-effective HR professional service tailored to the specific needs of gymnastics
clubs. The program assists clubs with human resource facets of running a club. From
feedback received from several clubs, the service provided from HR Plus has been
valuable and the Board has made a commitment to continue the service in 2015.
GWA provided an opportunity to clubs with over 900+ members to attend the “Elevating
and Inspiring Australia’s Leading Gymnastics Clubs” workshop in Victoria with other
900+ clubs from around Australia. StarMites and High Flyers took the opportunity to
attend the conference with Gymnastics Business leader Frank Sahlien (Third Level
Consulting). The clubs had the opportunity to network and gain valuable insights on offer.
GWA also commenced engagment with Third Level Consulting in regards to the business
development tools and resources on offer for all clubs with the view to rolling out the
program in 2015 and having Frank Sahlien at the 2015 Conference.
Men’s Gymnastics
The Technical Committee continued it’s progress after being re-formed in 2013,
despite the busy schedules of all of its volunteer members.
Initiatives
The committee’s current aims are to encourage increased participation in all aspects
of the sport, including athletes, coaching, judging and other volunteers.
From a coaching perspective, Mark Kural attended Australian championships as National
Levels Head Coach for the first time. This demonstrates that our younger generation
of coaches are willing and able to step up to the next level to lead our State Team.
Also, the Technical Committee was able to provide some funding for three Western
Australian judges to attend Australian championships in 2014. This is in contrast to the
position in recent years where just one or two judges have been funded from the judge’s
budget. The committee hopes that it can continue to support increased numbers of judges
attending Australian championships as it provides valuable experience to judges and
also supports our athletes through the increased presence of WA judges at the event.
Further, the Technical Committee has strongly supported an option for coaches and
judges to be able to undertake dual roles at Australian National Championships (as coach
and judge) where circumstances permit, in order to provide those people with the best
opportunity to develop their skills on the national stage for the benefit of our State.

In 2014, the Technical Committee ran the Judges’ Team Invitational competition. This
was the first time the team competition has been run by the committee and despite
some small hiccups with the scoring, the competition was a success in terms of both
raising much needed funds for the judge’s assembly and also in providing a quality
team competition for the levels gymnasts to participate in.

Women’s Gymnastics
World Championships
Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian formed part of the seven man squad who
travelled to Nanning, China for the Artistic World Championships in October.
With Nanning being the first qualifier for the Rio 2016 Olympics, 38 teams
entered. Lauren unfortunately rolled both ankles doing a tumbling pass
during floor in training prior to the first round of competition and was
unable to compete; but despite this set-back the Australia team qualified
for finals and placed seventh in the Team Final which is a fantastic result.
2014 started off marvelously, with significant travel and success for our Junior International athletes, included
in numerous National Tours in the first half of the year.
Overview
WA continued to have strong representation in benchmark event national
teams, with Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian included in both the Glasgow
Commonwealth Games and Nanning World Championship teams. Nationally,
our state teams produced great results snagging numerous gold and silver
medals, and our competitive numbers continue to show positive growth at
all levels of our state competitions.
The year started with a full committee and full judging sub-committee being
elected at the WAG Forum. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
Committee(s) for all their time and effort throughout the year and I look
forward to working with them again in 2015. Special mention goes to outgoing
technical committee member Devon Philips, whose contributions to the WAG
TC over the year assisted the committee achieving its goals, especially those
related to the adoption of GA’s Australian Levels Program (ALP).
The Year finished on a high, with Emily Little returning to International
competition in style, coming second in the All Around and second on Vault
at the Mexican Gymnastics Open held in Acapulco in December (her first
competition since the 2012 Olympics). Emily competed the first double
twisting Yurchenko for an Australian internationally since the 2012 Olympic
Games which was fantastic to see!
Initiatives
The WAG Technical Committee proposed a number of new initiatives in 2011,
with many of them initially actioned in 2012 and 2013. These initiatives all
aim to encourage athletes to continue in WAG and increase their skill and
quality level; by giving them additional opportunities and incentives. These
initiatives have continued to be run and each were further developed in 2014.
These initiatives are:

Additional national levels tour (National Levels 6-10) An additional
team to our State Team to Nationals was chosen to compete in
Tasmania at the Trans-Bass competition against teams from
Victoria and Tasmania.

National Levels 4-6 Talent Squad A squad of athletes from Levels
4-6 were chosen from state championships, to train with our
state team coaches and WAIS expert coaches at the WAIS Training
gym at HBF Stadium.
All of the WAG TC initiatives have been very well received and will again
be implemented in 2015/2016, along with other initiatives still in planning.
Key Events
National Championships
WA fielded a small but quality team to National Championships, with two
Teams medalling. The Junior International and National Level 9 Team’s both
finishing with silver medals. Individually, Paige James took the coveted Junior
International floor gold medal from a high quality field. Floor was a standout
apparatus for WA at Australian Championships, with a total of seven floor
medal’s taken home by the team.
Georgia Thomas (National Level 9) performed outstandingly to take out the
Silver Medals in the all-around competitions, a highlight for the entire team.
Commonwealth Games
Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian were included in the five man squad who
travelled to Glasgow, Scotland. The team competed well to finish in second
place, behind an impressive English team. Lauren Mitchell added to her
remarkable Commonwealth Games medal tally taking home Silver medal
on the Floor.

Rhythmic Gymnastics
Key Events
The RG Technical Committee successfully ran the qualifying competition #2 on 29-30
March. This competition and the judges Invitation were the two major fundraising
activities of the technical committee.
Official Acknowledgements
Overview
The RG Technical Committee noted that the 2014 State Team was one of the smallest
sent to Australian Championships in some time. It was however an exciting time with
our Senior International State Champion Amy Quinn securing her place in the 2014
Commonwealth Games Team in Glasgow. Not only did Amy make her Commonwealth
Games debut she was also been selected to represent Australia at the World Championships
later in the year in Izmir, Turkey. At just 16, Amy was the youngest athlete representing
Australia in gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games.
RG Technical Committee had outstanding results at Australian Championships with
our current state champion senior athlete, Amy Quinn receiving the overall silver
medal with silver individual medals for hoop and ball and bronze individual medals
for clubs and ribbon.
Both the sub junior and open groups also had fantastic success bringing home gold medals.
Initiatives
The RG Technical Committee has reviewed and provided feedback to Gymnastics
Australia on the new pathways diagram for RG. This diagram provides a simple
representation of how athletes progress through the competitions two streams and
the age limits that apply.
At the RG Qualifying Competition #2 and Judges Invitational we were fortunate to
have Gillam of Nikki Gillam Photography donate her time and provided a photographic
service to athletes and their families. This provided much needed additional funds
for the RG Judges Assembly.
I would like to acknowledge what an important contribution volunteers make to the RG
community. We have many people involved from the Technical Committee and Judging
Committee to all of our volunteers who give of their time and efforts to support our
gymnasts at events and in the state teams.
Every event relies on a large amount of volunteers including Floor Managers, Marshals,
Judges and Announcers. Without these volunteers it would not be possible to run state
events.

Aerobic Gymnastics
Trampoline Sports Report
Overview
2014 was a challenging year for the Aerobic Gymnastics Technical Committee, with many
of its members having to redirect their efforts to other gymsports or to the support of
our Australian gymnastics clubs. WA had a successful national championships, winning
many events, and we had four gymnasts represent Australia. They were Thoma O’Sullivan
and Cairo Leicester at the Suzuki World Cup in April, Giveney How at the 6th World Age
Group Competition in Mexico in June and Zoe Tisdale at ANAC in July.
Initiatives
This year we promoted, to the aerobics gymnastics community, the necessity for greater
involvement in providing support at AER events and taking on roles in, or in support, of
the TC. My thanks to those who committed their time and effort throughout the year.
Key Events
Accessibility to Aerobics Gymnastics has increased, in recent years, from one to three
clubs now running Aerobics Gymnastics courses in WA. A need to increase the number
of qualified coaches and judges in order to strengthen and prepare for the expansion
of these club programs was identified and so additional beginners and intermediate
judging courses and workshops where run throughout 2014 thanks to Debbs van Hagen
and Kieran Gorman.
At this year’s National Championships, WA fielded a small contingent of 15 athlete’s
aged from nine to 24, who brought home three gold medals and achieved a clean
sweep - gold, silver and bronze, in the International Female 18+ age division, with
most athletes achieving notable placements. The WA state team athletes and staff
displayed cohesion and team spirit that was duly noted at the championship by other
officials at the event.
There was also a lot more cohesiveness between members of the Technical Committee
and extra meetings were scheduled on top of those rostered to look at various initiatives
such as:

The opportunities for building capacity in the area of special needs athletes

Organising training camps where coaches and athletes can upskill themselves
•
Tumbling with a particular aim of having state team representatives in 2015
•
The formation of an alliance especially focused on the high performance
trampoline and the development of high performance athletes

Overview
2014 commenced with Susan Watts welcoming all to the trampoline forum on the
19th of January, were the agenda for the year was set. The changes to the technical
regulation were tabled which, as detailed in the GWA event handbook for 2014, brought
WA in line with the changes at the national level. The work was focused on ensuring
a consistent competition experience for all our athletes with clarity around judging
and qualifying criteria.
Over the year the challenges of building capacity with respect to judging was
recognised. The dedicated few continue to work hard to share their enthusiasm and
provide education for the newcomers. The specific challenges facing the country clubs
were recognised and as we progress into 2015 we will explore strategies to support
trampoline across all WA.
Initiatives
2014 saw the growth of the sport in WA such that the tradition of competing at the
national level as part of UTA was abandoned and for the first time WA stood as its own
entity at the Australian national championships.
It is also worth mentioning that WA had five Trampoline coaches attend the FIG level 3
course in Canberra. These coaches were able to upskill themselves and further increase
the knowledge and expertise in our state. In addition to this Elliot Stratton became
a member of the National Technical Commission, it is great to have WA represented.
With respect to competitions, 2014 was a large year for our state with many regional,
national and international events. Congratulations and thanks to all athletes, coaches,
volunteers and parents who helped for them all to happen.
I would like to thank all members of the 2014 Technical Committee, we recognise and
respect the selfless giving of their time in ensuring the strengthening of Trampoline
Gymnastics for all in WA. I would also like to thank all those in Gymnastics WA who
facilitate all gym sports to the highest level. Thank you to all members of the TC, GWA

Overview
2014 has seen an increase in participation in the lower end of Acrobatic Gymnastics and
we also saw interest from more clubs in Perth to take up the gymsport. Our athletes
that travelled to national events performed well.
2014 was a good year for the WAIS Women’s Gymnastics Program; with Lauren Mitchell
and Olivia Vivian contributing to strong national performances at benchmark events
and 2012 Olympian Emily Little returning to Senior International level competition for
the first time since the London Olympics.
Initiatives
A music and announcing software system trialled successfully at Judges invitational
includes scripts and music controlled through a single source. This reduces the need
for volunteers at competitions. Further work is continuing to provide support to judges
scoring and remote control access to the music
The WAIS Junior International level gymnasts stepped out on some of their first National
Teams. Yasmin Collier, Aya Meggs and Darcy Norman were all selected to compete at
the Nadia Comaneci International Invitational (USA), the Trofeo Citta De Jesolo (ITA)
and Pacific Rim Championships (CAN).
Key Events
WAIS gymnasts were selected for all levels of national camps, including Team Future,
Team Future Advance and Junior/Senior. The Team Future program saw WAIS continue
its trend of producing team future high achievers and gymnasts who rank in the top
25% for their age in the National IDEAL testing results.

as the remainder of half the arena space for other gymnastics equipment.

2014 Australian Championships – Melbourne – Individual podium

Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian contributed to Australia’s second placed Women’s
Team performance. Lauren also secured the silver medal on floor.
Lauren Mitchell and Olivia Vivian were part of the Australian team for the 2014 World
Championships. Lauren, who was looking in great form, unfortunately sustained an
ankle injury during training which rendered her unable to compete. The team rallied
to still place seventh overall in team finals. This seventh place finish saw Australia
qualify for the World Championships in 2015; which is the first qualification event for
the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

WA Men’s Gymnastics High
Performance Program (MAGHPC)
Overview
In 2014, the WA Men’s Gymnastics High Performance Program (MAGHPC) experienced a year
of highs and lows. The year started off on a positive note, with two athletes selected to
represent Australia on a national junior team, but ended with the MAGHPC closing in September
after more than 15 years in operation. It was a very sad moment for the program to have
to close its doors after so much competitive success, but the program has since relocated
to become a club-based / GA recognised High Performance Program and will continue to
strive to place athletes on the Australian team.
Key Events
Having both Gabriel O’Sullivan and Joshua Di Nucci selected onto the Australian Junior Team
for the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships in Canada was a fantastic achievement for both
athletes, as well as coach Oleg Tarkov. The boys competed well, with the Australian team
placing fifth. Individually, Joshua placed 9th AA and Gabriel placing 10th AA and making
finals on both Pommel and Rings.
The MAGHPC program sent a smaller team to Australian Championships in 2014, but still
managed to achieve excellent results. Notable achievements at the event were Jeremy
Choong’s 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze in the L7 U12 competition, Joshua Di Nucci’s gold and
bronze in L9 U17 and Maximilian Woloszyn qualifying for two apparatus finals less than one
year after his ACL reconstruction.

Senior International athlete Mitchell Nylander retired in February 2014 after being a part of the MAGPC Program for 10 years.
Senior International athlete Maximilian Woloszyn was accepted into the MAG National Centre of Excellence in Canberra and commenced his training
in this program in January 2015.
Tristan Treeby – finished coaching with the MAGHPC in April 2014 after
being with the program for four years.
Oleg Tarkov – reached his 10 year milestone with the MAGHPC and
represented the program at National Camps and Australian Championships. Oleg was won the MAG international levels coach of the year award.

Regional Associations
North West Regional Gymnastic Association (NWRGA)
Overview
2014 was a successful year for the North West Regional Gymnastic Association (NWRGA).
Many clubs had an increase in numbers, we saw record numbers attending our events
and we had the opportunity to offer three education courses.
Initiatives
The NWRGA conducted the first regional MAG Beginner judging course which was
held in Broome and produced five new MAG judges. This is testament to the growth
in the MAG discipline in the North West (NW) and resulted in double panels at the NW
Invitational competition.
The NWRGA in conjunction with GWA facilitated two coaching courses; a beginner
coaching course in Karratha and the first ever WAG intermediate coaching course
run in Broome. These courses were run by a regional presenter and assessor, Krystal
Cilia. Krystal’s ability to run these courses enables the NWRGA to offer courses within
the region and reduces the associated financial costs for both the NWRGA and GWA.
2014 saw the first year of the NWRGA Board working under the new constitution.
This board successfully conducted regular Skype meetings and three face to face
meetings. Thanks to the work of Rachel Beadle, Helen Westley, Krystal Cilia, Janet
Nicholson, Amanda Rintoul, Michelle Fitzgerald and Beth Hudson the Region created
a new Operation Plan which is now up to date and in line with the GWA Strategic plan.
This and the formation of a full active board the NWRGA was successful in receiving
funding from Department of Sports Recreation for the 2014/2015 year.
Key Events
The NWRGA ran three key events over 2014. NW Badge Testing which consisted of
one judge travelling and three clubs video badge testing. The Go for 2 & 5 North West
Regional Gymnastic Championships in Karratha; involved a Beginner Coaching course,
a two day competition with 160 gymnasts and a day of clinics run by metropolitan and
regional coaches. The NWRGA NW Invitational was held in Broome; involving a WAG
intermediate coaching course with eight participants, MAG beginner judging course
with six candidates, two days of competition with 146 gymnasts which included Kalijos
Gymnastics Club and two days of clinics.
All of these events were great successes and were greatly enjoyed by all who were
involved.
The NWRGA would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Department of Sport
and Recreation, in particular Brendan Cullinan for the support, guidance and funding
provided, GWA in particular Paula Dick, Healthways (Go for 2 and 5) and BHP Billiton for
their financial support. The North West is also appreciative of the continued coaching and
judging support provided by Tracy Holmes and Matthew Lean and the MAG and WAG TC’s.
Thank you to Jo Bulsing, Tracy Holmes, Colleen Ballantyne, Donna Grocott, Michelle Yardley,
Penny James, Matthew Lean and Jason Doust for attending the NWRGA events. A special
thank you goes to the Board for taking on their roles and assisting with the running of the
North West. Helen Westley must be acknowledged for always going beyond her role of the
administrator, Helen’s work is instrumental to the success of the NWRGA. The North West

Southern Regional Gymnastics Association (SRGA)
Overview
2014 was another successful year for the Southern Regional Gymnastics Association. The
SRGA ran two highly successful events being the Regional Congress and the Go for 2&5
SRGA Regional Championships. The southern region athletes experienced a successful
2014 with an athlete making the State team in trampolining, two State Champions in
their levels for trampolining and success for many athletes across several clubs at the
2014 Go for 2&5 club state levels championships.
The SRGA continued to focus on educating and developing our coaches, both at grassroots
level and competition. Several coaches from the region have now registered to upgrade
their coaching to advanced.

The SRGA is supporting two local coaches in becoming State Presenters, with the long
term goal of working with the state to facilitate coaching courses in the Region. With
the introduction of the new coaching courses and requirements, the SRGA is initiating a
six monthly rotation of coaching courses to assist and facilitate the growth of coaching
in the region. It is hoped that over time we will be able to also include judging courses
in the region.
While being a long-time supporter of the Artistic gymsports, the SRGA is looking
to promote other gymsports, with the goal of adding Trampolining to our Regional
Championships. Unfortunately in 2014 we found that this event clashed with the Spring
State Championships. We will try again in 2015. With two trampoline clubs now in the
region, this is more viable.
Key Events
Our first event of the year, the 2014 Regional Congress was held in Katanning and was
presented by Josh Fabian. It was well attended by all coaches and Josh did a fantastic
job inspiring, motivating and mentoring athletes and coaches.
Athlete and Coach clinics were very well attended and all that attended valued the
experience, having gained further knowledge and skill development. A fantastic time
was had by all. We thank the Dumbleyung Gymnastics Club for bringing their air mat
in for the event.
In September our annual Go for 2&5 SRGA regional championships was also held in
Katanning, and was attended by seven gymnastics clubs from across the region, with
142 athletes. This is our highest number in the last several years. It was fantastic to
see such a wide range of athletes competing, and to see level 4 boys for the first time
in many years.
Thank you to Krystal Cilia from the NWRGA for travelling down from Broome to co-present
a Beginner Coaching Course the day before the competition and to judge at the event.
It was fantastic to see so many new coaches on the competition floor the next day,
being able to gain immediate competition experience as a result of attending the
accreditation course the day before.
We also thank Colleen Ballantyne, Jo Bulsing, Tracy Holmes, Matt Lean and Nadia De
Vries. Without these fantastic judges, our competition cannot run.
The SRGA would like to thank Heidi Rose for continuing to support and work with the
members of the SRGA as the SRGA Mentor and Liaison. Thank you once again to the MAG
and WAG technical committees for their support of the SRGA and their events.
We would like to thank both the Department of Sport and Recreation, and Healthways
for their continued support of our events as well as GWA.
As a region we would also like to acknowledge Sue Virtue, a long-time coach for the
Katanning Gymnastics Club. After many years of involvement and support, Sue left
Katanning during 2014, Sue did a fantastic job with the Katanning Gymnastics Club and
the athletes during her time at the club. Sue also was a great supporter of the SRGA.
On a personal note, 2014 was my last year as Chairperson for the SRGA. I would like to
thank my committee; Amanda Nenke and Paula Raworth. I would also like to thank our
Administrator Helen Westley. Thank you all for putting up with me! And I wish Amanda
Nenke, our new Chairperson all the best for 2015.
