BOARD CANDIDATE CHARLIE SMITH
The Seventeenth Members’
Annual Meeting
Saturday, August 30th
Camp Lahontan ~ 4:00 p.m.
Biography
Charles Smith has 30 years of professional experience in the
high-tech industry in sales and executive management. He is
currently the principal of CWSmith Ventures, an angel investment firm, and an advisor to several emerging companies.
Charles held senior executive positions at Brocade Communications, IBM, Conner Peripherals, Parallel Technology, and
NEC. Charles has served on multiple private company and
non-profit boards and currently serves on the board of directors for CellTech Metals, Navigator Technologies and The First
Tee, Tri Valley chapter – an organization focused on positive
youth development through the game of golf.
State of the Club
I would like to thank Mr. Jon Madonna for the leadership and inspiration he imparted as our President over the past four
years and as a member of the Board for the past ten years. It has been an honor and a privilege for me to have worked with
Jon over the past decade and I will cherish the many discussions we had as we navigated the Club to the success it is today.
Jon’s tenure ends at our seventeenth Members’ Annual meeting on August 30th. Mr. Paul Johnston’s four year term on the
LGC BOD will also end on August 30th and I would like to thank him for his service and commitment to making Lahontan an
outstanding club.
An outstanding club is not only identified by great amenities, but by the membership itself. It is imperative that Lahontan continues to attract new members to insure its success. And while a great golf course or expanded camp facility can inspire one
to join Lahontan, it is our current membership that can identify that next new member. Please take a moment to go through
your friend list and perhaps identify a name or two that would love to be a part of Lahontan and let them know that now is a
terrific time to join. For more information, please contact myself or Missy Jones, Membership Director.
September 2nd. The date is set. The Camp renovation project, which will include a renovated and expanded bathroom facility, family hot tub, and cabana shower, is slated to get underway on Tuesday, September 2nd. The plan is to have the facility
fully available by Memorial Day Weekend 2015. Plans are available for review on the bulletin board at Camp Lahontan.
On behalf of the entire Lahontan staff, thank you for another great season and please don’t hesitate to forward any suggestions or comments that you may have.
Kind regards,
Jeffrey T. Cobain
General Manager
Charles earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management
from San Jose State University where he volunteers as an
advisor to the Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship and
is a judge for the SJSU annual student business plan competition. Charles and his wife, Marcela are active golf members of
Lahontan since 2001 and are also members of The Santaluz
Golf Club in San Diego, CA.
Statement of Interest in Lahontan Golf Club Board
I have enjoyed membership in private golf course communities for over twenty years including Ruby Hill in Pleasanton,
CA, The Grand in San Diego, CA, and presently at Santaluz and
Lahontan. I love the Lahontan Golf Club, appreciate being a
member, and admire its understated elegance and simplicity.
We are enthusiastic participants in the organized golf tournaments, social events, spa offerings, and frequent diners at
the restaurant and grille. As a representative of the Lahontan
BOD I would seek to uphold the traditions of the game of golf
and ensure that the Lahontan experience continues to deliver
the highest level of courtesy, service and professionalism. I
would thoughtfully represent the membership’s best interests
in balance with conservative fiscal responsibility. I will prioritize keeping the golf course in top condition and available for
member access along with maintaining the Lahontan quality
standards of our Food & Beverage, Spa, and the Camp. I understand how to be successful working with volunteer BODs
and committees and have many years of experience in this
environment. We must remain competitive in our offering,
uncompromising in service and responsiveness, responsible
to the community, and strive to maximize the participation
and enjoyment of all members.
The meeting will include a report
from your Board of Directors as well
as the announcement of the 2014
election results. All members are
encouraged to attend.

I would like to update everyone on the effects of the Paclobutrazol on the greens. We have applied two separate Trimmit applications to the greens to give the bentgrass a competitive edge. As you are seeing, some of the Poa has started to
recess and turn yellow. This is how the healthier bentgrass begins to grow over the Poa. You may notice that all of the Poa
is not yellowing; there are many different biotypes of Poa. Some are more sensitive to the Trimmit while others are not affected. It is important to use a variety of strategies and techniques to discourage Poa and promote our bentgrass. All of our
maintenance practices are directed to growing more bentgrass. The greens are rolling smoother due to the Poa not actively
growing throughout the day. We will continue Trimmit applications every three weeks throughout the summer until the
weather starts to cool down in the fall.

As we transition into autumn we will start focusing on more projects to better prepare the golf course for winter. One of the
areas we are focusing on is topdressing fairways. The process is a very long and labor cumbersome event. We will be applying 1000 tons of sand to our 30 acres of fairways. This will aide in thatch dilution, modify our current soils and ultimately
achieve firmer playing conditions. It is our goal to not impact you or current conditions of the golf course during the process. We are only able to complete one to two holes per day. This will allow for minimal disruption and help us maintain our
current conditions. Thank you for understanding and allowing us to improve your golf course. If you visit the “Superintendent’s Corner” our website you will see photos and explanations of what we are seeing on the course.

Chef JD Doherty
To many of you, our new Executive Chef JD Doherty needs no introduction. He’s been with us at
Lahontan for almost seven years and gained a wealth of invaluable experience as our Sous Chef
before stepping into his new position. However, there are a few things you may not know about
the man behind the great meals here at Lahontan.
JD was born and raised in Boyne City, Michigan. He’s had two strong passions that have seemed
to dictate the direction of his life; cooking and the mountains. JD went to college at Northern
Michigan University on the shores of Lake Superior for that very reason. He enjoyed the abundance of outdoor activities that Lake Superior had to offer while earning his degree in Food Service Management. JD worked in many kitchens throughout his time in college and upon graduation, moved out to the Tahoe area to ski with friends. Like many others, he never left. The
attraction of mountain biking incredible trails, skiing world-class terrain, fishing, and an abundance of other sports kept him here, which is lucky for us. Not long after he moved, JD started
his tenure here at Lahontan. Today, he prides himself on creating a menu that gives our members
the most eco-friendly and healthy options available. Other than creating dishes that please every palate, JD’s top priority is to
serve food that’s been sourced as locally as possible. Please join us in welcoming JD to our team of Directors at Lahontan!

Truckee’s Historical Figures
Lahontan’s streets are all named after the noteable towns people and
memorable characters that helped shape our beloved Truckee. Below is a
sampling of Truckee’s rich history. We will feature more characters in newsletters to come!
Elle Ellen
Ellen was born in East Friedland, Germany, in 1823. He took to the
cabinet trade, migrating to the U.S. in 1845. In 1868 he came to the
new town of Coburn's station (soon to be re-named Truckee) as proprietor of a saw mill. He is said to have put in the first flume in the area and
the first planing and shingle mill at Truckee. His first mill on the outskirts of
Truckee was on Trout Creek. In 1871, this burned and another was erected
on the same foundations. Logs were hauled as far away as two miles. In
1877, he constructed a new mill three miles up Trout Creek Canyon, near
today's Tahoe Donner subdivision. This mill was one of the largest in the
area. A mill pond was constructed just above the sawmill. At one time, Ellen held patents on 3,200 acres of timberland immediately around his mill
and ten full sections of forest lands. He constructed a V-flume from his new
mill, down Trout Creek canyon, to the railroad in Truckee. In 1878, this mill
produced 700,000 feet of lumber.

Donner Summit. Dogs not allowed.
August 19 - Flume Trail Hike: Time: 7:30 a.m./ Miles: 11/ Difficulty: 3

This is 3.2 miles of gradual uphill, 4 miles flat on the historic flume trail, and 3.2 miles downhill. 45 minute drive to trailhead at
the Historic Ponderosa Ranch, home of Bonanza TV series. Dogs not allowed.
-- or -August 19 - Tahoe Rim Trail: Time: 7:30 a.m./ Miles: 2/ Difficulty: 1
2 miles round trip from Incline Creek to Brockway, beautiful views of Lake Tahoe, 15 minute drive. Dogs allowed.
August 23 - Independence Lake: Time: 8:00 a.m./ Miles: 5/ Difficulty: 1
A little-known geologic twin to Donner Lake, Independence rests in a glacially carved basin backed by the northernmost High
Sierra. A flat trail traces its shore. Opportunities exist for picnicking at lunch, or enjoying free kayaking or even fishing boats (subject to availability) on the lake. 30 minute drive, no dogs allowed.
Carrie Pryor
Also known as “Spring Chicken,” Pryor was Truckee’s most infamous
“lady of the night.” She was involved in or the cause of numerous
gunfights, stabbings, brawls and civil disturbances during the 1870’s. Her
open defiance to both law enforcement and Truckee’s vigilante group, the
“601,” is early testimony to the unique spirit of individualism which some
say still lingers in Truckee.
James McIver
Born in Floriston in 1894, he lived in Truckee for most his life. He
worked as a teamster, a blacksmith and owned the McIver Garage.
He served as a sergeant in World War I and was active in community affairs,
including chairman of the board directors of the Truckee Sanitary District.
The McIver family owned and operated a dairy farm in Truckee. The buildings still stand in the meadow beyond the I-80 overpass at the west end of
town.

Tom Dolley
Of all Truckee’s lawmen, Tom Dolley was the most unique and wore
many hats over the years. A giant of a man, standing 6’8” tall, he
commanded respect wherever he went. He served as deputy sheriff, constable, chief of the volunteer fire department, state and town fire Marshall,
local agent for Railway Express, town undertaker, part owner of Truckee
Mercantile and was very active in civic affairs. During the 1930’s and 1940’s
he apprehended and arrested many fugitives who committed crimes in
other states and attempted to flee to California through Donner Pass. He
served 28 years as constable and saw Truckee change from a rough and
ready frontier town to a peaceful village.
