FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014
HOSTED BY
5 – 8 NOVEMBER 2014
ISST FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014
British School of Brussels
Wednesday 5 – Saturday 8 November 2014
Dear Hockey Players,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s ISST Field Hockey Tournament in Brussels. Over
these few days you will enjoy the fun and camaraderie of being part of a team, representing your
schools at the highest level. In team sports we find support, encouragement and a sense of community.
However, hockey is also a sport where every player has a unique role to play in the team and everyone
strives for their personal best, too. As you approach this tournament, it will be the culmination of many
weeks and months of training: of course not every team can win, but everyone can set themselves a
personal goal, which inspires them to give their best - and everyone’s best will also add to their team’s
success.
I wish you all a tournament full of enthusiasm and energy, with shows of skill and respect for others, and
an experience that becomes a highlight of your hockey year.
Good luck!
Sue Woodroofe
BSB Principal
Dear Athletes, Coaches, Officials and Supporters,
On behalf of the Extra-Curricular Sports Department at The British School of Brussels I would like to
welcome you to our school and city. We are very excited about hosting the ISST Girls Field Hockey
Championships. We are anticipating a competitive tournament filled with good spirit and sportsmanship.
The hosting of tournaments is a community effort and I would like to express my gratitude to all those
who have contributed to this event. Please take the time to read the acknowledgements in the
programme and feel free to personally thank any members of our community at any point during the
tournament. Additionally, please remember to thank your host family because without them,
tournaments of this nature would not be possible.
Furthermore, we hope that you enjoy your stay in Brussels and that you return home after the
tournament having had a positive experience filled with pleasant memories of your time here.
Good luck to all. May the best team win!
Simon Herbert
Head of Extra-Curricular Sports & Activities
ISST STATEMENT OF SPORTSMANSHIP
The purpose of the International Schools Sports Tournament is to provide a venue for athletes from the
member schools to compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational.
Each athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate her/his best athletic ability while maintaining a
spirit of respect and co-operation with fellow athletes from various international backgrounds.
Each event involves students and adults in their different roles. These include the athletes, coaches,
sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are expected to uphold the same spirit of
respect and co-operation. This spirit is demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive
encouragement from coaches, impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from
spectators. The behaviour of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the tournament.
The adults act as models for our athletes. Therefore profanity, deliberately making noises that distract
and interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the condemnation of coaches or officials, or
any behaviour that is disrespectful or degrading to the ISST standard of sportsmanship, jeopardises the
purposes of the ISST organisation and, most of all, jeopardises the quality of the experience for the
athletes.
As the event ensues, we ask that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this vision of our
purpose in mind.

TOURNAMENT RULES
Rules: Federation International Hockey (FIH) www.englandhockey.co.uk
The maximum number of players (including Managers) will be fifteen (15).
▪ Artificial surfaces will be used for all Championship games.
▪ Games will be 2 x 30 minute halves with a 5-minute halftime break.
▪ Three (3) points will be awarded for a win and one (1) point for a draw.
▪ Round Robin Format.
Note: That the playing schedule for the final day can be changed by the Tournament Director following
the penultimate day’s play. So that important matches conclude the tournament where possible and
appropriate.
▪ A precise record of all Green, Yellow and Red card offences should be kept by the Tournament
Director.
▪ The Tournament Director is responsible for keeping totals throughout the Championships.
In accordance with FIH rules:
a) Green cards are an official warning and results in a two (2) minute sin bin.
b) Yellow cards are issued for physical or verbal fouls /dangerous play. At the discretion of the umpire
the offending player may be sent from the field (sin binned) for a given period of time, but is allowed to
re-join the game after the time is served. (Time can be minimum of five (5) minutes).
c) Red cards result in the offending player being sent from the field of play and they are not allowed to
return to that game. Two (2) Yellow cards do not become Red. ISST rules mean a player receiving a Red
card in a game is ineligible to play in their team’s next game (i.e. they are banned for the following
game).
Flight Tie-Break Procedure: No extra time will be played. Places will be determined in descending order
of priority as follows:
1) Goal difference (+5 & -5 as a maximum per game)
2) Goals conceded
3) Goals scored
4) A penalty shoot-out will be held
If after any stage a three-way tie is resolved by one team being placed first or third, the two remaining
teams revert to the head-to head result.
Penalty shoot-out format:
This will be done at the end of the day with any team not in attendance forfeiting their games.
The penalty shoot-out will be done as follows:
a) Teams play each other in the same order as the Flight games.
b) Each team will nominate eleven (11) players, including a goalkeeper for each shoot out game.
c) From the eleven (11) players, the team nominates five (5) penalty takers.
d) A toss of a coin will decide the option to take the first penalty.
e) Penalties will be taken alternately. A minimum of five (5) penalties must be taken by each side. If the
scores are even at the end of the five (5) penalties, the score must be noted and a sudden death penalty
shoot-out will begin. Only players not used in the original five (5) penalties can be used from the eleven
(11) declared at the beginning of the shoot-out. This continues until one team wins on an equal number
of shots.
f) Winning teams are awarded three (3) points, tied teams = 1 point and losing teams = 0 points.
g) In the case of a tie after all shoot outs are completed, the usual format from a) above will be used but
will include the first five (5) penalties per team, per shoot out.
In a Semi-Final Game:
(a) Extra time will be played: 2 x 10 minutes (no halftime interval) If tied
(b) Penalties will be taken (as in Flight tie-breaker)
In Championship and Third Place Games:
(a) Extra time will be played: 2 x 10 minutes (no halftime interval) If tied
(b) The teams will share the title and the trophy
No extra time will be played in games to decide non-medal places (i.e. 5 - 8). In the event of a tie, the
placing will be shared.
ISST REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS
These regulations shall be followed by all students participating in tournaments and other athletic
events organised by the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST). Any student who participates
in an ISST event agrees to obey the regulations.
1. Students shall obey all instructions given them by their host parents and their coaches as if these
instructions were given to them by their own parents. This applies to all activities irrespective of
location undertaken during the period of tournament or competition.
2. Smoking, any other use of tobacco, the drinking of alcohol and the use of drugs are not permitted.
3. Housing arrangements made by the responsible official of the host school may not be changed.
4. Curfew
Arrival Day: No visiting athlete leaves the host family or the host family’s environment. For example,
visiting students do not go out with the host students or on their own. The host family (including a
parent) can take the host student out if really necessary (maybe to eat), but an evening in the host
house with an early bedtime will be the norm.
Other Days: The curfew is set for all athletes at 22:00 on Thursday and Friday, 23:00 on Saturday.
Visiting students are allowed to visit the city providing they have informed the host parents of their
intentions.
5. Students must be in the home of the host parent by the curfew hour set by the school. Students in
Grade 7 & 8 or Year 8 & 9 are not allowed out of the host’s care unless chaperoned by the host
parent and/or the coach. (This applies for all the days of the visit).
6. Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST Regulations for Students with
respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or
provisions set forth by the host school.
7. These regulations apply to all students: both those from the host school and those visiting
throughout the competition’s duration and, for visiting students, apply also during the journey to
and from the site of the event.
8. Violation of these regulations will be reported to the responsible ISST Official and to the student’s
Head Teacher. The offending student will be removed from the tournament and from the host
family home, and will either be placed under the direct supervision of his/her coach or sent home.
ISST GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
These guidelines are intended for the use of parents hosting tournament and other sporting
event competitors sponsored by the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST).
1.
Housing arrangements may not be changed. If serious difficulties arise, contact the housing
coordinator or the Athletic Director. Only they can approve changes.
2.
Make contact with your guest athlete as soon as he arrives at the school. That will relieve the
anxiety of the visitor. Discuss arrangements for getting to the school in the morning and what
will happen after the competition regarding meals, transportation, activities, curfew etc.
3.
Please pick up your visitor at the appointed time, or see to it that your son/daughter is with the
visitor on public transportation.
4.
Visiting athletes should not be allowed out without some supervision. If your son/daughter is
unable to go out with them, guests can go out (until curfew) with team-mates as long as there is
at least one ISH student or parent with the group. The only other alternative is if the players are
with their coach.
5.
Give visitors any information and precautions regarding environment: i.e. the metro, taxis.
6.
Be sure the visitor has your name, address, and phone number at all times, as well as the
number of the coaches’ hotel and ISH emergency number.
7.
Satisfy yourself that the visitor has enough money to take care of necessary expenses while they
are out. You do not need to provide this, but make sure, for example, they have taxi fare.
8.
Please provide the student(s) with a suitable meal at whatever time may be necessary because
of the scheduling of the competitions.
9.
Send “snacks & drinks” for the student(s) during the competition and be flexible with your
evening meal times as game schedules are not exact.
10.
Pack “snacks & drinks” for your visitor to take on the return trip to their home school.
11.
Observe and remind your visitor of all curfews set by the ISST organization (22:00). If you want
to set this curfew earlier, please do so.
12.
Students in Grade 7 & 8 or Year 8 & 9 are not allowed out of the host’s care unless chaperoned
by the host parent and/or the coach. (This applies for all the days of the visit).
