MASL SPOTLIGHT ON A LIBRARY
SELVIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, ROCKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT
THE LIBRARY AS A MUSEUM:
Q&A WITH SELVIDGE LIBRARIAN, JAMES MILLER
The Selvidge Middle School library is a vibrant display of
student artwork. Jim Miller explains how that got
started.
“Originally, I was talking with Rochelle Bower, the art
teacher, about needing to decorate our new library and
she asked if I’d like some student artwork to help. Ever
since then, she brings me the newest stuff and we
display what we can.”
Jim really likes seeing all of the different kinds of artwork
the students create, and by displaying their work in the
library, others can see it too. Like all good museums, the
collection continues to grow and change.
CREATIVE
COMPETITION
Not only is the library a place
to display student artwork, it
also serves as design
inspiration.
Selvidge students participate in
a quarterly bookmark
competition where winning
entries are duplicated and
dispersed for the student body
to use.
TOP 10 BOOKS:
PROMOTING READING, SHARING AND MASL READERS AWARD TITLES
Jim prominently displays the covers of the 10 most checked out books each
month. Students often check the Top 10 list before making their next book
selection. As you can see, MASL award nominated books are always popular.
Language Arts teachers bring their classes to the library during the Readers
Awards voting period to allow eligible students the opportunity to vote for
their favorite nominees. Seasonal, holiday and other themed displays
showcase timely reading materials and capture student attention.
