At the time of printing this guide, the digital transition was still
scheduled for February 17, 2009. However, there has been
much talk and speculation that it will be delayed until sometime
in the spring. Regardless of when the actual date is, the fact
remains that eventually analog TV will cease to exist and you
will need to switch to digital. If time is extended, you should
use that time wisely to buy whatever equipment you need, test it,
and begin watching and enjoying the benefits that new digital
technology offers.
There is a simple fix to make sure you are digital ready. If you
have an older TV that receives signals by using an outdoor or
rabbit ear antenna you have three options:
1. Buy a digital converter box. These boxes are readily available
at many large retail stores and cost between $40–$80. The
box connects to your older TV and converts the digital signal
back to an analog signal so that it can be viewed on your
older TV.

2. Buy a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. It doesn’t have
to be an HDTV, but those are the most readily available —
plus you’ll be able to watch the highest quality digital TV.

3. Subscribe to a pay service, such as cable or satellite. If your
TV is already hooked up to one of these services, you have
already made the switch for that TV. But if you have any other
TVs that are not hooked up to the pay service, you will either
need to have it connected or choose option 1 or 2 above.
funding limits.
For options 1 or 2, you will also need a good quality antenna.
If you currently have an antenna, try it first to see what kind
of reception you get with it. If it doesn’t seem to be working,
you may need to get a new or amplified antenna. But make
sure you get an antenna that picks up both UHF and VHF
frequencies because both types of stations exist in our market
in the digital world.

to be ready so you are

NOVA
Inside the Spy Factory
For the first time on television, NOVA
exposes the hidden world of high-tech,
21st-century eavesdropping carried out by
the National Security Agency (NSA). Today,
the NSA is the world’s largest intelligence
agency, three times the size of the CIA and
far more secret. Its mission is to eavesdrop
on the world — from cell phones in Europe
to pay phones in Afghanistan to email
messages from Pakistan to Baghdad. But
since 9/11, it has also turned its giant ear
inward, listening in without warrant on
thousands of American citizens, many
of whom are on the government’s secret
watch list, now more than half-a-million
names long. Based on the latest best-seller
by journalist James Bamford, Inside the Spy
Factory is a gripping investigation of the NSA,
from its tragic failures leading up to the 9/11
attacks to its secret listening rooms currently
installed in the nation’s telecom networks.
The program presents groundbreaking new
evidence about how the agency listened in
to the phone calls of key 9/11 plotters, yet
failed to realize they were located in the U.S.
To show how current eavesdropping technology
works, NOVA traces the path of an email sent
from Asia to the U.S. via fiber optic cables
on the Pacific sea floor. From a beach in
California, the email then travels to a telecom
switching facility in San Francisco, where the
cables are covertly duplicated, with one copy
of everything — including the original email
— going to the NSA’s secret room and the
other transmitted to its proper destination.
This is a suspenseful and eye-opening report

George Carlin: The Mark Twain Prize
Entertainers Jon Stewart, Bill Maher,
Garry Shandling, Lily Tomlin, Denis Leary,
Joan Rivers, Lewis Black, Richard Belzer and
Margaret Cho honor the late George Carlin,
recipient of the Eleventh Mark Twain Prize
for American Humor. The program, taped
at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on
November 10, 2008 recognizes the life
and achievements of the beloved comedian.
The Mark Twain Prize announcement was
made a week before the comedian’s death.
The award was presented posthumously for
the first time in its 11-year history.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and

This program follows Jack Johnson’s
remarkable journey from his humble
beginnings in Galveston, Texas, as the son
of former slaves, to his entry into the brutal
world of professional boxing, where, in

turn-of-the-century Jim Crow America, the
heavyweight champion was an exclusively
“white” title. Johnson lived his life out loud,
wearing fancy clothes, driving fast cars and
openly flaunting the conventions of the time
by dating and then marrying white women.
Despite the odds, Johnson was able to batter
his way up through the professional ranks,
and in 1908 he became the first African
American to earn the title Heavyweight
Champion of the World.

Looking For Lincoln
The two-hour program dissects the myths
that have grown up around Abraham Lincoln.
The film addresses many outstanding
questions that surround him — questions
about race, equality, religion, depression
and sexuality — by carefully interpreting
the evidence provided by people who actually
knew him. Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. leads
the investigation, with help from Lincoln
scholar Doris Kearns Goodwin.

What is this all about? Follow an in-depth
investigation into the great divide between
dogs and cats and just what draws us to these
two polarizing pets. Animal behaviorists,
psychologists, trainers and devoted owners all
weigh in. Dogs, we discover, are geniuses at
reading what we want and the complex cathuman bond can be as fickle or as deep as
a marriage. Funny, touching and provocative,
we ask how well we really know our best
friends and why we love them so much.

Oliver Twist
This bold and gripping adaptation breathes
new life into this much-loved Dickens story
about the young orphan Oliver who is sent
to the workhouse, where children are raised
on a diet of hard work and thin gruel. But
everyone knows the story doesn’t end there.
Timothy Spall (Masterpiece A Room with a
View), Tom Hardy (The Virgin Queen) and
Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) star in this
three-hour miniseries.

murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in Money,
Mississippi, and the Montgomery, Alabama,
bus boycott through school desegregation,
the march from Selma to Montgomery and
the Voting Rights Act, Eyes on the Prize
is considered the definitive history of this

America’s Ballroom Challenge
This exciting special captures the sizzling
