Getting Started
Welcome to AnnTheGran’s Catalog XPress software.
Catalog XPress allows you to use AnnTheGran’s Design
Exchange categories or create your own categories, and then
simply sort embroidery designs into the catalog as you download.
You will never misplace a design again. Catalog XPress is a fast
and easy way to organize embroidery designs from your
collection.

Getting Started
To get started using Catalog XPress, you should have all the
components of the Catalog XPress package and meet the
minimum recommended system requirements. You should also
know the embroidery software Catalog XPress supports.
The Catalog XPress Package
Each Catalog XPress package includes the following components:

System Requirements
The following are the minimum recommended system
requirements:
•
Pentium 200 MHz PC computer with a CD-ROM drive
•
Monitor with 640x480 video resolution with 16-bit color display
(or higher)
•
64 megabytes of RAM
•
Microsoft Windows 95/98 or later
•
Minimum 100 megabytes hard disk space available
•
Mouse or other pointing device
Catalog XPress is not
available for Windows
3.1 and Macintosh
operating systems.

Installing Catalog XPress from the
Internet
AnnTheGran makes it easy to install Catalog XPress from the
Internet.
To install Catalog XPress from the Internet:
You must be registered
on the AnnTheGran
website to download
Catalog XPress from the
Internet. See
AnnTheGran’s website
(www.annthegran.com)
for more details.

Download Catalog XPress from AnnTheGran’s website
(www.annthegran.com).
You will see the File Download screen appear.

Select Save this program to disk and click Next.
You will see the Save As window.

In the Save As window, choose where you want your Catalog
XPress executable file to be saved and click Close when the
download is complete.
Double-click the CatXPress.exe file from the location you
downloaded it.
If the Install Wizard appears, skip to Step 7 below.
If the Install Wizard does not work, do the following:

wChoose windows Start—Settings—Control Panel.
wDouble-click on Add/Remove Programs.
wTo start the Catalog XPress installation program, click
Install—Next.
Follow the subsequent Install Wizard prompts to finish the
installation of the program.

Opening and Closing Catalog XPress
To open Catalog XPress:
•
Choose one of the following methods to open Catalog XPress:
wChoose windows Start—AnnTheGran—Catalog XPress.
wDouble-click the AnnTheGran Catalog XPress icon on
your desktop.
You see the Catalog XPress window appear.
Without a license, you
can only run Catalog
XPress for up to 14 days
and you must select this
option when you install
the program. The License
Activation Wizard will
appear once the 14-day
trial period ends or the
first time you open the
software without selecting
this 14-day trial option
during the install. Please
see the section on
Registering Catalog
XPress for more
information.
To close Catalog XPress:
•
Choose File—Exit to close Catalog XPress.
Registering Catalog XPress
Initially you can use the Catalog XPress software for up to 14
days without a license. To use it in this 14-day trial mode, select
this option when you install the program. Each time you run the
program the remaining number of days in the trial period will be
displayed.

Any time during the evaluation period you can start the
registration using the Help menu. You can choose one of the
following options to obtain a license:
wUsing a serial number (requires Internet connection).
wProviding an unlocking key given to you by phone or email.
wTransferring a license from another computer.
Obtaining a License for Catalog XPress from the
Internet
If you received a product serial number with the program, the
number can be used to obtain a license. If you have an Internet
connection, you can have the program automatically obtain a
license.
To obtain a license from the Internet:

To open the Catalog XPress License Activation Wizard, select
one of the following procedures:
wIf you are using the 14-day trial mode for Catalog
XPress, choose Help—Activate License.
wIf your 14-day trial mode has expired, double-click the
AnnTheGran Catalog XPress link on your computer
desktop.
You will see the License Activation Wizard appear.

received and click Next.

To finish obtaining a license for Catalog XPress, click Finish.
Obtaining a License for Catalog XPress without
Internet Access
If you do not have an Internet connection, you will need to contact
Pulse Microsystems to obtain a license.
Email Pulse Microsystems at: [email protected]
Before you contact Pulse, please have the Serial Number and the
Site Code displayed by the Licensing Wizard. You will be given a
Site Key. Follow the License Activation Wizard instructions,
entering the Site Key information when requested, and follow the
prompts to complete the procedure.
To obtain a license without Internet access:

Transferring a License to Another Computer
Catalog XPress allows you to transfer a Catalog XPress license
from one computer to another.
To transfer a license to another computer:
Catalog XPress should be
installed on both
computers. Only the
computer with a license
can run Catalog XPress.

Turn on the computer with a license and the computer without
a license. On the computer with a license, open Catalog
XPress.

When transferring a

On the computer without the license installed, complete the

remove your disk and go to the computer with a Catalog
XPress license installed.
On the computer with a license installed, complete the
following procedures in Catalog XPress:
wChoose Help—Transfer License to another computer.
You will see the License Activation Wizard appear.

When the information is copied to your floppy disk, you
will see a dialog appear.
From now onwards,
Catalog XPress will not
be accessible from the
computer that previously

wGo to the computer without the Catalog XPress license
installed.

Before you begin using Catalog XPress, you should become
familiar with the software’s workspace and learn techniques on
how to personalize your workspace.

Workspace
The Catalog XPress workspace contains several areas. The
screen below shows the Catalog XPress workspace.

Catalog XPress Workspace
Title Bar
The Title Bar appears at top of the Catalog XPress window. The
location of the design displayed in your preview window appears
within the Title Bar.
Menu Bar
The Menu Bar appears below the Title Bar. The Menu Bar
contains a list of menus specific to Catalog XPress.

Toolbar
The Toolbar appears below the Menu Bar. The Toolbar contains
the following tools that perform specific actions and tasks.
Insert
Use the Insert tool
folder.
to add your designs only to the Pending
Refresh
Use the Refresh tool
to update any saved changes made to
your opened design. When you click on the Refresh tool, Catalog
XPress automatically changes the design thumbnail and the
design preview (if applicable) of opened designs to reflect your
changes.
Save
Use the Save tool
to select a file name, location, and format
for your design to be saved as.
Print
Use the Print tool
to view the Print Preview window for
selected designs. Within Print Preview, you can print your design
and related design information.
Cut
Use the Cut tool
to remove a design thumbnail from its
current category in Catalog XPress. When you remove a
thumbnail, you can then paste it into another category.
Copy
Use the Copy tool
to copy a design thumbnail and paste it
into other category within Catalog XPress.

Paste
Use the Paste tool
to place a cut or copied design into
various categories within Catalog XPress.
Delete
Use the Delete tool
to remove a design thumbnail or a design
preview from its current location in Catalog XPress. Delete places
the design into the Recycle folder.
Search
Use the Search tool
to find specific designs in the current
category. Catalog XPress allows you to search for designs by file
type, number of stitches, number of colors, size, width and height
specifications, and/or by keywords within your design notes.
Arrange
Use the Arrange tool
to select the order you want your
designs displayed in Catalog XPress. You can arrange your
designs by name, file type, number of stitches, number of colors,
size, or date, displaying your most recent designs first.
3D
Use the 3D tool
to toggle on and off a realistic preview of your
design in the preview frame.
Help
Use the Help tool
to view the Catalog XPress Online Help.
The Catalog XPress Online Help will help you learn the software
and provide solutions to specific problems.

Categories List
The Categories List allows you to organize your designs into
specific categories. You can select a category folder from the
categories list and the designs in that category will appear in the
main window.
Categories List
The All Category
The All Category folder contains all of the designs you have
stored in the Catalog XPress application. You can easily add
category folders and empty the recycle folder when you right-click
on the All folder.
The Pending Category
The Pending Category folder is a working category. Use this
folder to insert groups of new designs at once and then gradually
sort these designs into specific category folders to prevent errors
that may occur otherwise.

The Preview Frame displays a selected design, as well as
information about the design’s stitch count, color changes, size
and notes.

Design Thumbnails
A Design Thumbnail is a miniature display of a design in the main
window. Design thumbnails allow you to see the layout along with
basic information for many designs in the main window at once.

Status Bar
The Status Bar appears at the bottom of your window, showing
the thread colors for a selected design in the preview frame. The
number of designs selected in the main window and the total
number of designs contained within a selected category also
appear within the Status Bar.

Catalog XPress makes it easy to personalize your workspace. By
choosing View from the menu bar, you can add or remove both
your toolbar and status bar to increase the size of your window
display, allowing you to view more designs and categories at one
time.
Adding and Removing your Toolbar
To add your toolbar:

Select Toolbar.
You will see your Toolbar appear on your screen, if it is not already
showing.
To remove your toolbar:

category folders. Once you learn how to use Catalog XPress, you
will find and make changes to your designs with ease.

Catalog XPress makes it easy to find and work with embroidery
designs in your collection. You can view, add, and search for your
favorite designs, as well as take advantage of the software’s drag
and drop interface.
Viewing Designs
Viewing Designs in the Main Window
The Catalog XPress main window allows you to view all of the
design thumbnails contained within a selected category.
To view designs in the main window:
•
In the categories list, select the category containing the
designs you want to view.
You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main
window, as well as the colors used to create designs in the status
bar at the bottom of your screen.
Viewing Designs in the Preview Frame
The Preview Frame allows you to have an enlarged and more
detailed view of your design. You will learn important information
about your design in this frame, such as the number of stitches,
number of colors, and the size of the design. You can also view,
add, or change notes about a design within the preview frame.

To view a design in the preview frame:

In the categories list, select the category containing the
designs you want to view.
You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main
window.
In the main window, click once on the design thumbnail you
want to view in the preview frame.
You will view the design you selected within the preview frame, as
well as the colors used to create designs in the status bar at the
bottom of your screen.
To adjust the size of the preview frame:
•
Each time you open
Catalog XPress, the size
of your preview frame will
return to its default
settings.
Click and drag the upper or right-hand borders of the preview
frame.
The size of the preview frame will change accordingly.

To view, add, or change notes in the preview frame:
Only the first line of your
note will appear in the
preview frame.

In the preview frame, right-click on your design.
You will see a menu appear.

Choose Notes from the menu.
You will see the Notes dialog box appear.

In the Notes dialog box, choose one of the following options:
wTo view notes, look at notes in the dialog box and click
OK to close.
wTo add notes, enter your notes in the dialog box and
click OK to close.
wTo change notes, make appropriate changes in the
dialog box and click OK to close.
Viewing Designs in 3D View
Use the Catalog XPress 3D tool to see a realistic preview of your
designs.
To view designs in 3D view:
1
In the categories list, select the category containing the
designs you want to preview in 3D.
You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main
window.

In the main window, click once on the design thumbnail you
want to preview in 3D.
Choose one of the following methods to use 3D view:

wIn the Preview Frame, right-click on the preview of the
design and choose 3D View from the menu.
You will see a realistic preview of your design in your Preview
Frame.
To view designs in standard preview:

Choose one of the following methods to return to the standard
preview:
wCancel the 3D tool
selection from your toolbar.

wIn the Preview Frame, right-click on the preview of the
design and clear the 3D View selection from the menu.
You will see your design in the standard preview.
Opening Designs with your Embroidery Software
Catalog XPress makes it easy to open any of your designs in your
embroidery software, such as Tajima, Pulse stitch file, Melco file,
Pfaff file, Janome, Viking, Poem, Singer, and Brother.
To open designs:

In the categories list, select the category containing the
designs you want to open with an associated embroidery
software.
You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main
window.

In the main window, click once on the design you want to open.
Choose one of the following methods to open the design:
wDouble-click on the design.
wRight-click on the design and choose Open Design from
the menu.
Your design will open in its associated embroidery software.

Inserting Designs
The Insert tool
is one of many ways to put designs into
Catalog XPress. Use Catalog XPress to insert designs into a
specific folder or into the All folder that contains all designs in the
catalog. You can also insert designs from locations other than
Catalog XPress.
Catalog XPress comes with a default list of 100 AnnTheGran’s
Design Exchange categories, allowing you to download designs
into appropriate categories.
To insert designs into the Pending folder:

When you insert designs
into Catalog XPress, you
are only directing the
software to where your
design files are located on
your computer or
removable media. You
must place designs into
their permanent locations
before you insert them
into Catalog XPress or
Catalog XPress will not
find them.
Click the Insert tool
on your toolbar.
You will see an Insert Designs screen appear.

When inserting designs
into the Pending folder,
you can press CTRL+I to
perform the same
function as the Insert tool.
In the screen, find the location of each design you want to
insert and check the box next to each design name. If you
select folders, all subfolders will be selected as well.
Select one or more of the design formats listed on the right of
the window and click OK to close.
The designs you selected will appear in the Pending folder from
your categories list.
To insert designs into specific category folders:

In the categories list, select the category folder that you want
to insert your designs.
Right-click on the category folder you selected.
You will see a menu appear.

Choose Insert Design from the menu.
You will see the Insert Designs browse window appear.

want to insert and check the box next to each design name. If
you select folders, all subfolders will be selected as well.
Select one or more of the design formats listed on the right of
the browse window and click OK to close.
The designs you selected will appear in the specified category
folders.

To insert designs from locations other than Catalog
XPress:

Right-click and choose Send To—AnnTheGran Catalog XPress
on any design or group of designs that are zipped, upzipped,
or on a combination of zipped and unzipped designs in any
supported file type. These designs can be from any folder and
on any drive of your computer.
You will see a Send To browse window appear.

In the browse window, select the category you want to place
the designs and click OK. Catalog XPress will automatically
unzip design files that are zipped.
When you download
designs from the Internet
onto your computer, you
will follow the same
procedure "To insert
designs from locations
other than Catalog
XPress."

Cut, Copy, and Paste Designs to Different
Categories
Catalog XPress gives you an easy way to organize your design
thumbnails. You can cut or copy your design thumbnails and then
paste these designs into various category folders.

Click once on a design thumbnail in the main window. To select
multiple design thumbnails, press CTRL while clicking on each

Choose one of the following methods to cut your design:
wClick the Cut tool
from the toolbar.
wRight-click the main window of the selected category
folder and select Cut from the menu.
wPress CTRL+X.
The design thumbnail you selected will be cut from its current
location.
To copy design thumbnails:

Click once on the design thumbnail in the main window. To
select multiple design thumbnails, press CTRL while clicking

The design thumbnail you selected will be copied from its current

Select the category folder where you want your design

The design thumbnails you pasted will appear in the desired

Deleting Designs
Use the Catalog XPress delete tool
to remove a design
thumbnail or a design preview from its current location, category
folder, or completely from Catalog XPress.
To remove a design from its current location:
If the deleted design
appears in other category
folders, the design will not
be deleted from Catalog
XPress.

In the categories list, select the category containing the design
you want to remove. To select multiple design thumbnails,

You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main

When you remove a
design from Catalog

disk, you can still restore

In the Empty Recycle dialog box, select one of the following
options to remove the design from the selected location:
wIf you want to remove selected files from the catalog,
select Remove Selected Files from Catalog. At the
prompt, click OK.
wIf you want to remove selected files from your hard disk
and the catalog, select Remove Selected Files from
Hard Disk and Catalog. At the prompt, click Yes.
Saving Designs
Use the Save tool
to select a file name, location, and format
for your design to be saved as.

To save designs:

You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main

In the main window, click once on the design thumbnail you

To update saved changes to your design in Catalog

Open the design in your embroidery software program and
save your design changes.
When you use Catalog XPress next, choose one of the
following options to update your changes in Catalog XPress:

from your toolbar.
wRight-click on the main window and select Refresh from
the menu.
wPress F5 on your keyboard.
Your design thumbnail and preview, if applicable, will
reflect the changes made to your design.
Using Design Notes
You can view, add, or change designs notes in Catalog XPress. If
you download a design, you may want to note the Internet
address where you downloaded the design and the date. Once
you have design notes added, you can easily search through your
catalog for designs.
To view, add, or change design notes in the main window:

thumbnails by name, file type, number of stitches, number of
colors, size and date.

Working with Catalog XPress Categories
The Categories List allows you to organize your designs into
specific categories. You can select a category folder from the
categories list and then view, add, rename, or delete the designs
in that category. Catalog XPress also allows you to assign
different icons to your categories.
Viewing Categories
To view categories:

In the categories list, select the category folder you want to
view.
You will see design thumbnails for that category within the main
window, as well as the colors for that design in the status bar at
the bottom of your screen.
To view a category subfolder:

Adding Categories
To add a category folder:

reset data in your catalog.
Using Catalog XPress to Backup Data in your
Catalog
Use Catalog XPress to backup data in your catalog.
To backup data in your catalog:

Restoring Data in your Catalog
Use Catalog XPress to restore your catalog from your backup
copy. Once you restore the catalog, all modifications made after

Resetting Data in your Catalog
Use Catalog XPress to reset your catalog to its initial state and
remove all of the data you added.
To reset data in your catalog:

state.
Printing Options
Catalog XPress provides numerous ways to print your designs
and categories. You can also use Print Setup to ensure that your
designs fit on the page just the way you want before you begin
printing.
Printing Designs
Catalog XPress allows you to easily print designs and their
associated thread charts.
To print individual designs:

In the main window, click once on the design thumbnail you
want to print.

from your toolbar.
You will see a preview of how the design and its thread chart will
look when printed. Page 1 displays the location of your design on
your computer. Page 2 lists the colors and threads used for your
design.

At the top of your screen, click the Print button to print your
design.
Printing Your Catalog
Use the Print Catalog option to arrange how designs print on the
page. You can arrange how many columns or rows of designs to
print on a page, as well as learn how many pages in total will be
required to print all of your selected designs.
To print your catalog:

If you want to print your
entire catalog, ensure that
you select the All
category folder.

In the categories list, select the category folder you want all
designs printed from. If you want only specific designs printed
from the folder, press CTRL while clicking on each design
thumbnail.
Choose File—Print Catalog.
You will see the Print Catalog Options dialog box appear.
In the Print Catalog Options dialog box, enter any of the
following information and click OK:
wIn the Designs columns area, select how many columns
you want shown on a page.
wIn the Designs rows area, select how many rows you
want shown on a page.
wIf you only want to print a selection of designs from the
category folder, check the Print selected designs only
box.
You will see a preview of how your designs will look when you
print the category.

At the top of your screen, click the Print button to print the
designs in your category folder.
Using Print Setup
