Energy Saving Tips TOP ENERGY SAVING TIPS
Lighting

Turn lights off when leaving a room or when not in use
Appliances & Electronics

Use daylight when practical by opening curtains/blinds


Use task lighting rather than overhead or multiple lighting

Use compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent ones. This
typically will save $1 per bulb changed out (for bulbs running 4-6
hours per day) and reduce heat in your home. Regular bulbs use
most of the electricity to generate heat, so use care when
changing these.

Heating & Cooling




Manage heat and cool thermostat settings: Set heat back at night
or when not at home; use air conditioners for nighttime cooling.
In cold months, set the thermostat to 68 degrees when home,
and back to 55-68 when unoccupied



Use box fans with air conditioners to improve air circulation and
for faster cooling. Box fans also can be used to filter warm air
from the house.

Seal all gaps around air conditioners

Set your water heater to 120 degrees

Clean furnace/air conditioning filter regularly

Install hot water pipe insulation. Keep insulation at least 6 inches
away from flue (exhaust pipe) of gas water heaters
Miscellaneous


Fix leaky faucets and install low-flow showerheads
Plant trees/shrubs on south and west side of your residence. The
vegetation acts as insulation and provides shading

Turn off TVs when not watching
Unplug your TVs/VCRs when you’re on
vacation. Most new sets draw power
even when they are turned off
Double spin clothes washer to remove
extra water
Clean lint filter on dryer after each load
Set time to dry clothes only as long as
needed
Dry multiple loads, not allowing the
dryer to cool down
Line dry clothes whenever appropriate
Turn off appliances when not in use.
Don’t forget your computer! Most new
computers have sleep settings
 Do not preheat oven. Cook on lower heat
with lids on


Check seals on your refrigerator and
freezer
Vacuum your refrigerator coils
(underneath and in the back), and don’t
obstruct the coils. They need air space
to work properly
Keep your freezer as full as possible.
You can place containers or plastic
bottles filled with water in empty
spaces.


Make sure food is cool and covered
before it goes into the refrigerator or
freezer
