has worked at a mixed animal

“I like the variety in the
veterinary medicine field,”
explains Herrin. “Every day
can be unique and interesting.
I also appreciate that veterinary
medicine is challenging,
involving problem solving
skills.”
Herrin’s parents also
influenced his decision to
pursue his dream exposing
him to some amazing things in
nature and teaching him how
to care for pets.
“I own a pug named Pugsly
and a Dalmatian mix named
Kitty,” smiles Herrin.
His Eagle Scout training,
Christianity and Choctaw
Native American heritage add
to that appreciation for animals
and his environment. His
academic advisor describes him
as having “a real enthusiasm
for learning” and “being a
unique individual” in that he
is “quite intelligent, a very
kind, articulate, caring and
compassionate individual,”

Honors Senator Paddack
State Sen. Susan Paddack’s
work to strengthen laws aimed
at Oklahoma’s most dangerous
criminals has earned the gratitude
of the Oklahoma District
Attorneys Association. The
organization recently presented
the Ada Democrat with the 2009
Legislative Appreciation Award.
“Senator Paddack has assisted
us with a number of pieces of
legislation,” said Cathy Stocker,
district Attorney and incoming
President of the Association. “We
wanted to thank her and recognize
the positive impact she has made
on the criminal justice system in
Oklahoma.”
Paddack was principal author
of Caitlin’s Law, named for the
Ada teen who was kidnapped and
murdered by her mother’s former
boyfriend. The killer was out
on bail for an earlier kidnapping
of Caitlin’s mother when he
abducted Caitlin. That legislation
focused on the reform of laws on
bail. This past session, Paddack
successfully authored and passed
legislation that increased the
penalty for kidnapping from the
current maximum sentence of 10
years to a new maximum sentence
of 20 years.
“As a Senator, and also as a
mother, I fervently believe that
public safety must always be a
top priority for state government.
As citizens, we want to know that
our children, our families, friends
and neighbors will be safe in their
homes and in their communities.
We also want the predators who
violate that safety to be held fully
accountable for their crimes,”
Paddack said. “As a legislator, I
will continue to do everything in
my power do accomplish both.”

will hold their annual car wash Saturday, August 22. The fundraising event will be held from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 101 Car Wash, located at the corner of Highways 76 and 19. Come

band will also be holding a preview concert and ice cream social Tuesday, August 25 at 7
p.m. at the football stadium.

1942-43. The hair styles, the
clothes, and the youthful faces
all reflected those World War
II years.
Even though what we now
refer to as “snail mail” is going
out of style, it is still exciting
to those of us who associate
it with the days of our youth.
Perhaps the older generation
still has the patience to wait
for the wonders that sometimes
appear in our mail boxes. I
still get a rush of excitement
when the postman delivers an
unexpected letter. I always
hope it will contain something
strange and exciting. We used
to joke about “getting money
in the mail.” Now I hope for
something like the pictures that
came last week.

me in Box 83. As I write this
article, I am looking at my
Social Security card that I got
when I was 18. In my study,
I have the draft notice telling
me to report for induction
on December 12, 1952. As I
took that letter from Box 83, I
knew that my life was about to
change forever.
And the memorable
letters continue to arrive in
my mail box on Pine Avenue.
Last week, I received a 6x8
brown envelope from a lady
in Bakersfield, California. It
was rather heavy, suggesting
that it had pictures inside.
When I eagerly opened the
envelope, I found 48 pictures
of people who attended school
at Bradley from 1942 to 1945.
Those pictures are nostalgic
treasures for me. An enclosed
letter identified the sender as
Anna Faye Duggan, whose
family moved from Bradley
to California in late 1945. She
said that she and her sisters,
Ada and Ethel, were looking
through old albums and wanted
me to have the pictures. She
said that they are avid readers
of my “Matchbook Memories”
column in The Lindsay News.
Their family, the Ben Duggan
family, lived on Colbert Creek
near the Victria Farm where
we lived. As I looked at the
pictures Anna sent, memories
of those days and those people
came flooding back.
Although the pictures
had names written on them, I
recognized most of the people
instantly. Some of the people
still live in the area; some have
moved far away, and too many
have left this earth. But the
pictures brought them back as
they were in those long ago
days. One picture showed
my brother, Jim, and Jonnie
Etta Hollis before they were
married, standing in front of
Bomhak’s Cafe in Bradley. In
the background were the tall
windows, the double doors,
and an RC Cola sign on the
wall. Another picture taken
in front of Bomhak’s Cafe
showed Mary Ella Bomhak, my
sister-in-law, Ada Duggan, and
Nellie Simmons. Crowding
into the picture at the side was
Jimmy Owens, a mischievous
grin on his face.

who have left this earth – Roy
Brooksher, Loyd Bomhak,
Frank Prince, Leon Beene,
Dean Mitchusson, John
Springman, Paul Bagwell, and
George Driskell. There were
pictures of Bradley girls whom
I knew – Maryetta McCord
Keeler, Mamie Taylor, Veronica
Looney, Ruby Simmons, Billie

had taught me words that my
mother forbade me to speak.
As the mail carrier drove away,
I yelled, “Wave, you ---.” The
mail carrier stopped, backed
up, and said, “What did you
say, young man.” Jim says I
walked to the house very fast,
looking back to see of he was
following me. I never yelled
at him again.
When we lived a mile
south of Bradley on a small
farm, Del Bennett was our
mail carrier. Sometimes, in
those days, chewing gum
manufactures would send
samples in the mail. I always
hoped to find one or two sticks
of Beech-Nut, Spearmint, or
Juicy Fruit gum in the mail
box. As soon as you opened
the mail box, you could smell
the enticing aroma.
My most vivid memories
of letters in the mail are from
the World War II years when
we lived on the Victria Farm
north of Bradley. I would
watch for the Alex Star Route
mail carrier to come down the
road. I would hope to find a
letter from my brother Jim,
who was a gunner on a B-24
bomber, flying missions over
Europe. The letters were Vmail letters, single page letters
on paper as thin as tissue paper
to conserve space and weight
as they were shipped from
Italy to Alex. I would run as
fast as I could to the house
where my mother would be
eagerly waiting to read Jim’s
letter. I would read Jim’s
letters over and over, trying
to imagine what it would be
like to fly bombing missions
against the Germans.
When I was in high school,
we got our mail in Box 83 in
the Bradley Post Office. In
those years, the Bradley Post
Office was located in the back
part of Badertscher’s Store, a
white wooden building which
stood on the west side of Main
Street near the creek that ran
through Bradley. The building
stood directly in front of the
house where Claire McCann
now lives. I still have two

School Class Meets
The ladies of Winsome Sunday
School, First Baptist Church, Lindsay,
met early again for their monthly
breakfast meeting. Attendance was
light. Doctor appointments, grandkids
visiting, and an early funeral accounted
for many of the absent ladies.
It had sprinkled that Tuesday
morning, but folks are still looking
for rain. The cooler temperatures
are appreciated. Barbara Lackey
mentioned new members on the roll.
Then she gave the blessing. Carolyn
Hutto brought the devotional while
we waited for breakfast.
You Are So Blessed!
If you woke up this morning with
more health than illness, you are more
blessed than the million who won’t
survive the week.
If you have never experienced
the danger of battle, the loneliness of
imprisonment, the agony of torture
or the pangs of starvation, you are
ahead of 20 million people around
the world.
If you attend a church meeting
without fear of harassment, arrest,
torture, or death, you are more blessed
than almost 3 billion people in the
world.
If you have food in your
refrigerator, clothes on your back, a
roof over your head and a place to
sleep, you are richer than 75% of
this world.
If you have money in the bank,
money in your wallet, and spare
change in a dish someplace, you are
among the top 8% of the world’s
wealthy.
If you hold your head up with
a smile on your face and are truly
thankful, you are blessed because the
majority can, but most do not.
If you can hold someone’s hand,
hug them, or even touch them on the
shoulder, you are blessed because you
can offer God’s healing touch.
If you can read this message, you
are more blessed than over 2 billion
people in the world that cannot read
anything at all.
You are so blessed in ways you
may never even know. Count your
blessings, name them one by one.

and reminisced about old times
and exchanged favorite religious
television shows. Prayer was
requested for Frances Sunderland’s
sister and Millie O’Connell. Those
attending were: Lavora Dodd, Kathy
Ellithorp, Shirley England, Carolyn
Hutto, Barbara Lackey, and Frances
Sunderland.

Stimulus Law Bolsters
Food Bank Offerings
As part of the federal stimulus
law, the nation’s food banks have
received a windfall of $100 million
in extra food this year. That’s the
good news.
The bad news is that food banks
around the country, including the
Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma,
are struggling to meet increased
demand for food caused by economic
conditions. So, as welcomed as the
increased amount of food is, it simply
isn’t enough.
“Many families in Oklahoma
are seeking food assistance for the
first time,” said Regional Food
Bank Executive Director Rodney
Bivens. “Our agencies are reporting
an increase in demand as high as 50
percent, which is more than they can
handle.”
Truckloads of food started
arriving in May and will continue
through the end of October. In all,
the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
and the Community Food Bank of
Eastern Oklahoma will distribute
approximately one million pounds of
stimulus-provided food to help feed
the hungry statewide.
“The increased demand is
strong, and appears to be sustained,”
said Bivens. “When the economy
is weak, we are hit from both sides
- more people are in need of food
assistance while donations of both
food and money are less. And, as
grateful as we are for the additional
food through the stimulus program,
what happens to people when that
comes to an end in October?”

Turn off the highway and let’s
go down the Wallville Road. I pull
back on the reins and bring my
horse to a halt. I rest my hands on
the saddle horn and gaze out across
the way at the blue haze mountain
sides of the Table Tops. The Table
Top Mountain so called because
of the flat top appearance as seen
from a distance. The Mountains
loom like a silent guardian over
this rural community. They quietly
watched as history unfolded before
them. Seeing the settlers come in
their covered wagons, staking
their claims, and burying the dead.
The half dug out homes, the men
converging on the hillsides in
search of wild game, pheasant,
rabbit, wild turkey, or deer. The
lonely cry of the wolf and coyote
across this six-mile of mountain
range. Smoke curling up from
the chimney of a mountain man’s
home on a cold winter day. Panther
Creek and Rush Creek lay a semi
boundary for the mountains.
Homesteads and oil wells have
spotted the landscape. Deep in the
wooded section of the mountains
are tombstones and graves of
settlers and Indians of long ago.
Who once made rides down the
Wallville Road.

the oldest at 79. The ride was

Mountains there before Noah Wall
placed his foot on ground that
would later bear his name. Young
people have criss-crossed the
mountain side carving their names
to be left for the ages. Ed Denson
and sons, Ed Kay, Babe Kay and
Riley Adams just some who spent
nights in a wolf and coyote hunt
among the mountains.
Jim Crawford, laid claim to
2000 acres of land with much
of it encircling the Table Tops.
He donated mountain land for a
one room school house for the
families who made their homes
deep in roads coming in and out
of the mountainside. But, now
along with Crawford, the other
one-room schools of Bell, Davis,
Thompson, and Mountain View,
just a memory.
Tales of the Boys Ranch once
started there, rumors of Jesse
James and buried treasure have
given place to oilwell sights and
barbed wire fence and cattle while
the mountains keep their secrets
well guarded down the Wallville
Road.

Holiness Church and enjoyed
quilting and crochet, cooking,
gardening, and singing.
