Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner
The Father Who Had
TwoSons
(Luke 15)
Perhaps the most famous of Jesus’ stories/parables can be found in Luke 15. We usually call it the Parable of the Prodigal Son. However, Jesus begins the story: “A man had two sons…” So it is really more about the
father than any of his sons. A closer look at the different characters in the story may help us shed more light on
the nature of God and our spiritual life… First of all, the Prodigal Son: in the context of Jesus’ preaching, this
son represents the disreputable people of Jesus’ time—namely tax collectors and sinners. He is also symbolic of
all of us who, at one time or another, have been far away from the Father’s house. In our spiritual life we can be
very childish: demanding for what we think belongs to us (“give me my share”) before knowing how to form a
good relationship with God our Father. Like this son, our conversion can only happen once we come to terms
with ourselves: coming to our senses. And that takes some humility.
Secondly, the Father: of course he represents God. He is truly merciful and forgiving. When his prodigal
son was still a long way off, he exultantly ran out to him to welcome him home: even before the son had a chance
to say sorry. This reminds us that God loves us—even while we were still sinners, mired in our helplessness;
even before we have a chance to say to him: “Father I have sinned against heaven and against you.” Also, we
are reminded that not only that we are a pilgrim people, but that God is a pilgrim God in search of his people, like
the Father in search of his wayward son or the Shepherd looking for his lost sheep… Thirdly, the Elder Son: he
has never been away from the Father’s house. All these years he has been faithful in service to his Father. Yet
somehow his heart has been heavy with bitterness and anger. Obviously he represents the self-sufficient people
(i.e., Pharisees) who are so sure of their self-righteousness and look down on everyone else. This son never left
home, but he is equally far from home as is his younger brother. In our spiritual life, we can be equally far from
the Father’s house through sin and infidelity as through bitterness of heart… In the end, readers of this parable
may ask about what might have happened next in the story: what became of the prodigal son, or did the older
son also come to his senses? But those questions are irrelevant, because the story is really about the Father
who had two sons!

RECONCILIACIÓN
La verdadera reconciliación es emocional, dramática y purificadora. Cuando dos personas se encuentran de corazón a
corazón para reparar viejas heridas, malentendidos y palabras descuidadas, lágrimas purificadoras fluyen con frecuencia y el encuentro termina con un abrazo que llena a ambas con el calor de un amor demasiado fuerte para apagarse.
Las lecturas esta semana nos aseguran que una saludable liberación acompaña la reconciliación. Ellas nos dan el valor
de acercarnos a alguien con quien necesitemos reconciliarnos, y también nos dan valor para pedir perdón a Dios.
En la lectura del Éxodo, vemos cómo Dios se niega una y otra vez a abandonar a los israelitas. Aunque ellos se impacientan con Dios y adoran falsos dioses, Dios todavía vuelve a llamarlos. El Evangelio de san Lucas nos asegura que
Dios se regocija cuando nos apartamos del pecado. La carta de Pablo a Timoteo nos anima, como Pablo, a revisar
nuestra vida y a reconocer las ocasiones en que Dios ha sido paciente y misericordioso con nosotros.

Although the Catechumenate is a gradual year- round
process of initiation into the Catholic faith, Fall is a
time when many seekers inquire about the faith. There
will be registration and orientation for adults 18+
years who are seeking formation for the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist on Sunday, September 18, following the 9:30 Mass in the teachers’
meeting room next to the faith formation office.
