ΤΕΚΜΗΡΙΩΤΙΚΗ ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΑ Farm Security Administration Dorothea Lange Walker Evans Allie Mae Burroughs, wife of cotton sharecropper. Hale County, Alabama 1935 ή 1936 Library of Congress, LC-USF342- 008139-A [P&P] Η κρίση του 1929 σύντομα έπληξε και τους αγρότες στις ΗΠΑ. Τα εισοδήματά τους εξανεμίστηκαν, η παρατεταμένη ξηρασία και η εκμηχάνιση της γεωργίας αποτέλειωσαν τους μικροκαλλιεργητές. Όμως, η γεωργία θεωρείτο από την εποχή του Thomas Jefferson έως τον Theodore Roosevelt ως θεμέλιο του αμερικανικού πολιτισμού. Επί Roosevelt, το αγροτικό ζήτημα καταγράφεται ως το πρόβλημα του «μοναχικού ανθρώπου» που ορθώνεται απέναντι στα οργανωμένα συμφέ-ροντα. Αυτούς τους μοναχικούς αλλά και καταβε-βλημένους ανθρώπους προσπάθησαν να αποτυπώσουν οι φωτογράφοι που συνεργάστηκαν με τον οργανισμό Farm Security Administration και τον υπεύθυνο για τη φωτογραφική τεκμηρίωση του οργανισμού, Roy E. Stryker. Στη διάρκεια των δέκα περίπου χρόνων που διήρκεσε το πρόγραμμα του FSA, συνεργάστηκαν αρκετοί σημαντικοί φωτογράφοι. Ανάμεσά τους οι: Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Arthur Bernstein, Ben Sahn, Jack Delano, Maron Post Wolcott, Gordon Parks, John Wachon και Carl Mydans. Οι εικόνες του FSA Ενημέρωναν το κοινό για το κοινωνικό πρόβλημα που επιχειρεί να επιλύσει το FSA και Τεκμηρίωναν φωτογραφικά τη ζωή της αγροτικής – κυρίως – Αμερικής. Lee Russel, On main street of Cascade, Idaho, Ιούλιος 1941 Library of Congress H Dorothea Lange (Dorothea Margaret Nutzhorn) γεννήθηκε το 1895 στο New Jersey. Αποφάσισε να ασχοληθεί με τη φωτογραφία τελειώνοντας το Λύκειο. Έμαθε να φωτογραφίζει στο στούντιο του Arnold Genthe στη Ν. Υόρκη (1912-14), και στη συνέχεια εργάστηκε στα στούντιο του Aram Kazanjian (1914) και της A. Spencer-Beatty (1915-16). Παρακολούθησε τα μαθήματα φωτογραφίας του Clarence White, στο Columbia College (1917-18). Το 1918 έστησε δικό της στούντιο στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο. Το 1920 παντρεύτηκε τον ζωγρά-φο Maynard Dixon. Όταν ξέσπασε η οικονομική κρίση, τα οικονομικά της οικογένειας περιορίστηκαν, η σχέση με τον άντρατης κλονίστηκε και το 1933 αποφάσισε να εγκαταλείψει τα πορτρέ-τα και να βγει στο δρόμο. Εκεί φωτογράφιζε τους φτωχούς που σχημάτιζαν ουρές για να εξασφαλίσουν λίγο φαγητό. Έτσι, πολύ μικρό μέρος του υλικού αυτού περιλαμβάνεται στο αρχείο του Μουσείου της Καλιφόρνια. Μετά το τέλος του πολέμου, ο πλήρης φάκελος με τα αρνητικά και τις εκτυπώσεις που δημιούργησε η Lange για το WRA τοποθετήθηκε στα Εθνικά Αρχεία στην Ουάσιγκτον.
