Set in County Donegal in 1936 during the Celtic harvest festival of Lughnasa, the play tells the story of the five
Mundy sisters and their brother Jack, who has returned home from the missions after 25 years away. The story is
told by the sisters' nephew, Michael, who recalls when he was seven years old the summer spent with his aunts
who raised him in their crumbling, rural home in Ballybeg, a place where they once danced a wild, raucous dance,
a dream-wild dance of memories. Dancing at Lughnasa is itself an Irish dance to the exciting, fleeting melody of
the past, yet is also a dance against the harsh, progressive beat of the present.

INTERSECTIONS: ART AND WORDS
8/22-9/24
4th Friday 9/23 5-7 PM Music by Phil & Mary Show
This is the opening exhibit of the Gallery’s 2016-2017 season. The focus of this exhibit is visual art using text for its
graphic impact, whether in 2D or 3D. The art juxtaposes
vivid images with the descriptive and decorative language
of letters, numbers and/or symbols. With individual words,
passages of text or a fresh look at the visual form of numbers, the artists bring new insights to a variety of subjects,
from “To Do” lists to literature to the mystery of mathematics and beyond.

ANTIQUE TYPEWRITER COLLECTION Through 9/24
This amazing collection of George Wiant’s antique typewriters can be seen in the Gallery during the
Intersections exhibit. Christoper Latham Sholes is credited with inventing the typewriter in 1874. In
1888, the first machines used visible printing. More fascinating information about typewriters can be
found in the Gallery, especially about “men only” keyboards and Remington’s decision to sell its patent to a “small company” – IBM – in 1935.
DAY OF THE DEAD 9/26-10/30
CALL FOR ART DEADLINE 9/10
This exhibit celebrates the Day of the Dead / el Dia
de los Muertos, a day of rich cultural significance in
many Hispanic parts of the world. In Mexico, special
songs, poems, food, and toys are created. Families
gather at an ofrenda, an altar dedicated to the deceased, or at their gravesite, bringing decorated sugar skulls, candles and their loved ones’ favorite foods
and drinks. Whimsical skulls and skeletons, “papel
picado” (perforated paper), are also part of the event
iconography. Entry forms can be found in the Gallery
and posted on the PCA website: www.pca-az.net
9/30, 10/1 & 10/2 10 AM—4 PM
The PCA Gallery is highlighted as an Art
Center during the Prescott Area Artists Studio
Tour, September 30-October 2. At PCA, six local artists will offer demonstrations and sell
their work from 10:00 to 4:00 each day: Ron
Miller, welded metal sculpture; Lynn Cummings, functional and decorative ceramics;
Maryhelen Ewing, oil painter; Joan Knight, upcycled wearables; Barb Wills, silk scarves; Leslie Parsons, jewelry.

MAINSTAGE THEATRE LOBBY ARTWORK
Arlene Minuskin
Through 11/1
Arlene is active in both the performing and visual arts. She has appeared in community theatre productions since her teen years. She
has performed in PCA’s Mainstage and Stage
Too theatres and with other Prescott area theatre groups. Arlene began to pursue photography when she moved to Arizona in 2000,
with a preference for “urban landscapes,”
focusing on the city and the people who live
in it. She has won many awards for her
work. Arlene is a member of PCA’s Visual
Arts Committee and local photography
clubs. “Photography is demanding. The
camera’s eye demands that I stay alert to
life going on around me – that I capture the
unusual – that I capture the ordinary – and
that I never stop learning and telling a story.”
The Gallery is completely supported by the work of its active volunteers. Curators are
an integral component of each exhibit. Tasks include drafting the Call for Art and Acceptance letters, jurying in submissions, hanging the exhibit, and participating in the
openings and art walks. Contact Barb Wills at [email protected] for more information.
The Visual Arts Committee (VAC) meeting is held in the Gallery at 3pm on the first
Tuesday of each month. The committee oversees the Gallery’s activities. A congenial
group, you are invited to stop by and attend a meeting. We seek people who are interested in hosting, working on exhibits and have an interest in the visual arts. Training is
provided. If you are interested, call Barb Wills, (928) 445-2796,
[email protected].
If you would like to host a morning or afternoon in the Gallery, contact VAC host coordinator, Mary Ann Sorrell – [email protected]. If you have never hosted at the gallery, nor
hosted since 2014, you need to take a one-hour training class. The next training course is
Saturday, September 24, 10am. Please contact Marge Landry to sign up for the next
class: [email protected]
The PCA Gallery is open 7 days a week. Look for the teardrop sign by the entrance
