The mission of The Ensemble Theatre is to preserve African-American
artistic expression; to enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community.
This project is funded in part by a grant from the
City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
The Ensemble Theatre
The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George
Hawkins to preserve African-American artistic expression and to enlighten,
entertain, and enrich a diverse community. Thirty years later, the theatre
has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of
Mr. Hawkins’ car to become one of Houston’s finest historical cultural
institutions. The Ensemble is one of the few professional theatres in the
region dedicated to the production of works portraying the AfricanAmerican experience, the oldest and largest professional AfricanAmerican theatre in the Southwest, and holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest
African-American theatres owning and operating its own facility and producing in-house. The
Ensemble Theatre has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder, and continues to expand
and create innovative programs to bring African-American theatre to a myriad of audiences.
The programs and operations of The Ensemble Theatre benefit a multi-cultural audience that
is diverse in age, income, ethnicity, and culture. Its core audience is African-American (70%).
The Ensemble produces a Mainstage Season of six contemporary and classic works devoted to the
portrayal of the African-American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The
Ensemble’s Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence
experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the Theatre, and the Young
Performers Program offers intensive summer training for children ages 7 to 17 encompassing
instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts. Through its varied programs, The Ensemble
projects to benefit an audience and artistic constituency that may potentially exceed 150,000
people annually.

About the Playwright
Lorraine Vivian Hansberry (1945-2005)
When Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun appeared on Broadway in 1959,
at 29, the artist became the youngest American playwright, the fifth woman and the
only African American to date to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for
Best Play of the Year. The play represented a landmark. In its authentic depiction of
Black American life and the vivid demonstration of so gifted a creator, cast and
director, A Raisin in the Sun made it impossible for the American stage to ignore
African American creativity and subject matter thereafter. In 1961, the film version
won a special award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the screenplay written by Hansberry was nominated
for a Screen Writers Guild Award.
In 1965, Lorraine Hansberry died of cancer at age 34. As if prescient, in the six years she had between the
triumph of her first play and her death, she was extraordinarily prolific. Her second play to be produced on
Broadway, The Sign in Sidney Burstein’s Window, ran to mixed reviews and closed on the night that she died.
To Be Young, Gifted and Black, an autobiographical portrait in her own words, was posthumously produced
in 1968 and won the record for longest Off-Broadway play, running and subsequently, touring across the
county. In 1970, Les Blancs, her play about the inevitability of struggle between colonizers and colonized
in Africa and the impending crisis that would surely grow out of it, ran on Broadway to critical acclaim.
A Raisin in the Sun has been translated on all continents and in more than 30 languages, and performed
in numerous productions abroad. In the U.S, in over 45 years, through stage, film, television and book
publications, literally millions of people have had some acquaintance with the Younger family of Chicago’s
Southside and their fears, frustrations, longings and dreams. A study of audiences during those years would
reveal a progressively growing social consciousness, as Americans began to catch up with the artist’s prophetic vision in sensing the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement, the growing awareness of feminism
including no only the strength of women, but also their vulnerability in interpersonal relationships with
their men, the essential nurturing bonds of family and the need for all members, from youngest to
oldest, to have space in which to dream. Today, A Raisin in the Sun continues to resonate, holding the
power still to reach new audiences and influence new generations.
— Jewel Handy Gresham Nemiroff
Director’s Notes
How fitting The Ensemble Theatre’s theme this season: An Encore of Excellence, A Raisin in the Sun exemplies
that excellence, the very best in the American theatre. It is a classic written by Lorraine Hansberry, the first
Negro woman playwright, produced on Broadway, March 11, 1959, the first negro director on Broadway, Lloyd
Richards both deceased, both leaving a timeless and priceless legacy. As we look back we see that the work still
resounds, still informs, uplifts and inspires. We thank you, we celebrate you, we speak your names, Lorraine
Hansberry and Lloyd Richards.
— Ashé
Elizabeth Van Dyke
About the Director
Elizabeth Van Dyke is a New York-based actress and director who is very grateful to
The Ensemble Theatre and the cast and crew of Raisin for this wonderful opportunity.
She recently directed Waiting to be Invited at The Ensemble. Other directing credits
include Great Men of Gospel: Spirit into Sound at NFT & the Bermuda Arts Festival
(AUDELCO Award); Things of the Heart: The Marian Anderson Story; Amiri Baraka’s
Remembering We Selves at NJ PAC; The Old Settler at the Invisible Theatre; Sophisticated
Ladies, Kuntu Repertory Theatre (ONYX Award); Pretty Fire, St. Louis Black Repertory
and the Passage Theatre; Welcome Home Marian Anderson, The Sirens, For Colored Girls,
To be Young Gifted & Black, Zora, starring Phylicia Rashad (AUDELCO nomination), and A Raisin in the Sun,
to name a few of her favorites.
Some of her recent acting credits include, Mrs. Dickson in Intimate Apparel; Lady MacBeth in Macbeth; Peggy
in Blue; Sister Margaret in The Amen Corner; Berniece in The Piano Lesson; Molly Cunningham in Joe Turner’s
Come & Gone; Lady in Brown in For Colored Girls; Julia in Wedding Band, and many more. Elizabeth originated
the roles of Mattie in No Dogs, No Niggers, & No Jews (AUDELCO nomination.); Fannie Mae Dove in Flyin’
West; Annie Talbot in The Dance on Windows Row (AUDELCO Award, Best Ensemble); and is known for her
award-winning portrayal of Zora in Zora Neale Hurston and Lorraine Hansberry in Love to all, Lorraine.
Ms. Van Dyke sits on the boards of the Passage Theatre in Trenton, N.J. and New Federal Theatre in New York
City. She is also the producing artistic director of Going to the River, a program for African-American Women
Playwrights at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City.
Artistic Director’s Notes
A Raisin in the Sun, the play that has affected every African American actor since the late
1950s. A Raisin in the Sun, the play that produced the world’s first black director, Lloyd
Richards and first black playwright, Lorraine Hansberry on Broadway. A Raisin in the Sun,
the play that remains among the most resonant plays of the 20th century. A Raisin in the
Sun, a timeless piece of literature. From a review by Rabbi Jacob J. Weinstein on March 13,
1959 the following comments were given: “It states in Proverbs 13:12 ‘Hope deferred
maketh the heart sick. But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”’ And in the poem which prefaces
the script of A Raisin in the Sun, the same truth is expressed:
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat
Or crust and sugar over
Like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sages
Like a heavy load
Or does it explode?
A Raisin in the Sun, the poem by Langston Hughes has assisted in establishing an enlightening expression of the
African-American experience. One that embraces our innate ability to smile, laugh, love and be sensitive to life’s
offerings. I would encourage each of us to look for our own Raisin in the Sun and allow ourselves to….dream.
