When the U.S. Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month, in 1987, Susan
Block wasn’t even thinking about joining the feminist movement.
“I am in no way a feminist, never have been,” she
said; “I’m a marketer at heart.” In the 1980s, she
was working at a prestigious Chicago PR firm, and
on weekends restoring the vintage cottage she and
her husband, Lee Block, had bought in Duneland
Beach. This endeavor led to Susan’s second career,
as an interior designer. Recently, coming full-circle,
she returned to writing, but this time for self-expression, rather than writing for clients.
These several skills have now come together in
“Fifty Shades of Female,” the art exhibit she conceived and curated at Southern Shore Art Gallery in
Michigan City. The exhibit shows the female figure,
in her infinite variety; it will run thru March 31.
“I wanted to create an event that would increase
the visibility and status of Southern Shore Art Association,” said Block, who serves on the group’s
advisory board. “ I wanted to bring in new artists
and visitors. My experience in marketing and interior design, creating newsworthy events, and my
dedication to the cultural life of this community, all
seemed to culminate in this show. It has been a very
fulfilling experience.”

With the help of her co-chairperson, Michigan
City artist Staara, Block sent out a call for artists, via the Internet. Altogether 32 artists entered,
many of them newcomers to Southern Shore. They
submitted a total of 71 pieces – paintings, sculpture, photographs and mixed media – all of which
were hung. Unlike other shows based on the theme
of “female,” this one was also open to male artists.

“What was so interesting,” Block observed, “was
the tremendous variety of female images. She is presented in so many aspects, from cherubic to aging
woman, at every stage of life. The female is shown
in her sumptuality, feminity, rebellion, anger and
despair. Some works are realistic, others abstract.
Various ethnicities are represented.” There are a
few nudes – this being, after all, an art show.
The work of six local poets is also included, their
poems framed and displayed as small paintings.
The inclusion of poetry reflects Block’s own status
as a poet. In 2010 she was honored as Poet Laureate
of La Porte County.
For the front window, Block managed to acquire a
mannequin, which became the symbol of the show.
She contacted Deb Henderson, another Michigan
City artist, to give the figure an artistic character,
plus disguising the fact that the mannequin was
armless. Henderson painted it bright white (with
red lipstick and metallic toe-nails), and fashioned
“wings” that drape around the figure like a high-

Although this exhibit was not conceived as a
contest, People’s Choice awards were given. The
winners: Dana Dabagia (Michiana Shores), Esther
Guncheon (Beverly Shores) and Rhonda Mullen (La
Porte), tied for 1st Place; Sharon Guy and Richard
Kiebdaj (Michigan City), tied for 2nd; and Kathy
Gleser (La Porte), 3rd.
“We have had tremendous response to the show,”
Block said, citing the large attendance and extensive press coverage. Another crowd-pleaser was the
screening of the film “Who Does She Think She Is?”
which followed the careers of five women artists
who, in their quest for self-expression, also met the
challenges of marriage, motherhood and economic
stability.

An award-winning director and cast bring the
suppression and dysfunction seething under the
surface of Tennessee Williams’ classic play “Cat on
a Hot Tin Roof” to a boil onstage in Footlight Theatre’s upcoming production.
The storyline is well-known – Big Daddy Pollitt
(George Maslankowski), the richest cotton planter
in the Mississippi Delta, is about to celebrate his
65th birthday. He is distressed by the rocky relationship between his beloved son Brick (Andrew Elderkin), an aging football hero who has turned to drink,
and his beautiful and feisty wife Maggie (Lindsey
Elderkin). But that’s not the biggest problem on Big
Daddy’s hands – he’s dying. Brick’s brother, Gooper
(Noel Carlson) and his wife, Mae (Peyton Daley)
are cunning in their attempts to seize control of
the estate, while Big Mama (Vicki Cash) is in denial. Throughout the evening, the family’s veneer of
Southern gentility slips away as unpleasant truths
emerge.
“Cat” is set in the 1950s, but the subject matter
speaks of the same problems our families experience today, said Andrew Elderkin. “To an outsider, the interactions amongst a family seem trivial
compared to events that make the news, but to the
members of that family, nothing could be more important,” he said.
Show dates are April 5- 7 and April 11-14, curtain
at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m.

Community Market Day Sale
Indiana Ballet Theatre Presents…
It’s true what they say, “one man’s trash is another’s treasure” so let’s reuse, renew and recycle your
gently-used, unwanted goods and turn them into
someone else’s treasure! On April 27, from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m., the Zoo crew is teaming up with the Zoo
society to organize a community market day sale at
Krueger Memorial Hall located at 801 Liberty Trail,
Michigan City, IN.
This is the perfect opportunity to sell personal
items you no longer want or need without having
to advertise, hang signs or worry about the weather! You may donate your items for the zoo to sell or
spaces are available for rent.
There are some restrictions on the items that
you will be permitted to sell and those who are interested in participating must register in advance
with the zoo at (219) 873-1510. The cost per assigned space will be $15.00, which includes the use
of three 8 foot tables. Participants may begin setting up no earlier than 7:00 a.m. and no later than
7:50 a.m. on the day of the sale or the day before on
Fri., April 26th from 4:30-7:30 p.m. All items must
be removed by 4 p.m. on Saturday after the sale,
unless you wish to donate them to local charities.
Please mark your calendars to attend the sale,
which will include books, CDs and videos, clothing,
toys, stuffed animals, collectibles, animal artwork,
jewelry, housewares and other unique items. There
will be a concession stand open and the Zoo Mobile
will be there with a few of the outreach animals for

Hoosier Star Auditions
The LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra
(LCSO) is looking for contestants for the eighth annual Hoosier STAR competition. The Hoosier STAR
competition, sponsored by Horizon Bank and NIPSCO, is open to amateur singers of all musical types
and age groups.
Auditions will be on Sat., March 23 from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. (CDT) and Sun., March 24 from 12 p.m.
to 5 p.m. (CDT). The auditions will take place at
the LaPorte Little Theatre, 218 A Street, LaPorte,
Indiana.
Registration forms can be found on the LaPorte

Contestants are encouraged to pre-register for a

Village Green Neighborhood Association enjoyed
hearing from Guest Presenter, Alicia Ebaugh, Education Coordinator, LaPorte County Solid Waste
District, about recycling and the upcoming Great
American Cleanup with Keep America Beautiful.
The local event is scheduled for May 4 from 9 a.m.
to noon. The schedule will coincide with Michigan
City’s event and Alicia was seeking volunteers from
Village Green to pick a spot, like the beach, Striebel
Pond, or someplace closer and the trash bags will
be provided, along with bottled water and snacks,
all free.
According to George V. Neagu, the LaPorte County Solid Waste District will be happy to operate
through the local organization and supply informational material and details.

A total of 66 species were counted in the 27th
annual Northeast LaPorte County Christmas Bird
Count, which is the most in its history. The previous
high count was 55 species in 1985 and in 2001. The
Northeast LaPorte County CBC is sponsored by
the Potawatomi Audubon Society and the LaPorte
County Conservation Trust. The Northeast LaPorte
County CBC is one of over 2000 counts that are conducted each year in North America.
A total of 5489 individuals were observed. The
most common species was American Coot, with
2009 individuals counted.
One species which was observed for the first time
was the Rusty Blackbird. This was observed in a
flock of Grackles on the edge of Saugany Lake.
The mild weather in December caused some species that normally migrate to be present in unusually high numbers. Included in this group are Great
Blue Heron (5), Blue-winged Teal (26), Sandhill
Crane (3) and Eastern Bluebird (32). The 26 Bluewing Teal may be the largest winter sighting ever in
Northern Indiana. These were observed at Ridgway
Wetland, a nature preserve owned by the LaPorte
County Conservation Trust.

that is not often seen in
the winter is the Carolina
Wren, a southern species
whose range is expanding
northward. This species
was first seen on the count
in 1990.

the local lakes, water bird type species were abundant with a total of 19.
There were 17 participants in the count, including 15 in the field and 2 feeder counters.

Purdue University North Central will continue
its Diversity Brownbag Series on Wed., March 27
with a presentation on baseball player Roberto Clemente and the immense impact he had during his
life and how that continues 40 years following his
death.
The program will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the
Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, located just off the PNC cafeteria. It is free and open
to the public and guests may bring their lunch.
Varying opinions are welcome.
Dr. Kenneth Kincaid, PNC assistant professor of
History, will discuss Clemente’s life, his accomplishments and his legacy. In particular, the presentation will reflect on his social activism, especially
as it related to humanitarian causes and race relations. Clemente died 40 years ago, in a plane crash
on Dec. 31, 1972 while delivering relief supplies to
earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Kincaid will explore how Clemente’s iconic stature has not only
persevered over the years, but in many ways continues to grow in the United States and Latin America.
The Brownbag Series features PNC faculty, staff
and community members leading programs that
center on the topic of “diversity.” Some presenters
feature short film clips or interactive pieces that
will stimulate conversation and discussion; others
will present ideas for open dialogue and sharing of
views and experiences.

Michigan City Area Schools will conduct Kindergarten and Preschool (Pre-K) registration for the

Chesterton Peace 5K Run & Walk
Audition Notice For Footlight Players
The 3rd Annual Chesterton Peace 5K Run & Walk
will be held on Sat., April 13th with a start time of
8:00 a.m. The course begins in front of Duneland
Montessori Academy at 109 W. Porter Ave., in Chesterton across from Lucretia’s Restaurant. The very
scenic route winds through downtown Chesterton,
including Coffee Creek Town Park, and ends behind
the school.
Pre-registration by April 1 is $20 for runners, $15
for walkers and includes an event t-shirt. Goodie

This event benefits the Peace Scholarships and

Culver to Host Michiana’s Rising Star
WNIT Public Television is pleased to announce
that the Culver Military Academy auditorium will
host one of the five regional competitions of “Michiana’s Rising Star,” a search for the brightest and
best talent in the entire Michiana region. The Culver contest will be held on Sat., June 15, and includes entrants from Marshall, Starke, Fulton, LaPorte, Porter and Pulaski counties in Indiana.
The five top performers from each region will
then compete at the WNIT studio each evening from

Monday Musicale Celebrates Schubert
Michigan City’s Barker Mansion will be the scene
of a “19th Century Schubertiade” as Monday Musicale members gather on Mon., March 25 at 7 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend this classical music
program. While there is no admission charge, donations to the club’s scholarship fund are appreciated.
A “Schubertiade” is an event held to celebrate the
music of Austrian composer Franz Schubert (17971828). Compositions by Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms will also be
heard, according to program chairman Joan Brill.
Performers are to include vocalists Deborah
Beien, Frank Casorio and Donna Mitchell. Also,
John Crayton, Connie Hendricks, Katherine Kallay, Florence Long and Stan Shepard on strings.
They will be joined by guest cellists Amber Walton
Amar and Rosilee West. Ann Dobie and Carol Garrett will play a Brahms waltz for piano four hands.
Schubert’s art song “The Shepherd on the Rock” will
feature soprano Sheryl Edwards, Merry Johnson on
flute, and Lee Meyer on piano. Meyer will also present Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in A major,” the first
movement.
A social hour follows the program. The hosting
committee, led by Dobie and Garrett, will serve
light refreshments in the mansion’s dining room.

Cemetery & Research Association
Eating Well for Healthy Living
The Cemetery & Research Association of LaPorte
Co., IN had their first meeting of the year recently
at the home of Pres. Deanna West. Members from
various areas of the county meet bi-monthly on the
second Monday at 1:00 p.m.
With the motto of “We remember, search and
document, so they are not forgotten,” members research the numerous LaPorte County cemeteries,
many dating to the beginning of the county, and attempt to document all county cemeteries, including
abandoned and non-existent and the burials therein.
This information including family histories,
when known, is then placed on the association website http://www.dunelady.com/laporte/cemeteries by
webmaster West.
The group is currently seeking information on
the abandoned Allen Toney Family Burying Ground
which was located south of St. Rd. 4 off 350E adjacent to the 2000 block of Pleasant Acres Subdivision.
Anyone having any information to the exact location of the cemetery; who was buried in this cemetery and dates of death; what may have happened
to the tombstones or were the burials removed to
another location, is asked to contact Patricia Harris

Association of LaPorte Co., IN will be at 1:00 p.m. 8
April. Anyone interested in becoming a member of
this research group is invited.
Adults interested in learning more about how
foods affect our bodies in different ways are invited
to register for one or all of the sessions in Eating Well
for Living Healthy, March 25, April 8 & 29, May 13,
and June 3, from 3-4:30 p.m. at Westchester Public
Library. Classes will take place in the Bertha Wood
meeting room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana
Ave., Chesterton. Registered Dietetic Technician

disease: a healthy diet and exercise. Learn how to
incorporate heart healthy meals and movement into

•At the May 13 session, Keys to Healthy Weight
Loss, learn the safest and most effective ways for
achieving healthy and lasting weight loss. Increase
your energy and reduce your risk for cardiovascular
disease, type 2 diabetes, and many cancers.
•The final session in the series, Diabetes: Selfmanagement, will take place on June 3. Choosing the right foods can be daunting for people with
diabetes. Learn basic and easy guidelines for meal
planning.

from Trinity Christina College with a Biology major
and a minor in Chemistry. She also earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Nutrition from Central
Arizona College. She has worked at Kraft General
Foods performing vitamin analysis of foods. She
also served a Dietetic internship at Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillville and Methodist Cardiac Rehab Center and Outpatient Diabetes Clinic,
and worked at Methodist Hospital in Merrillville.

Breaking Point by C. J. Box
We all have our breaking point.
Some of us have a higher tolerance
level than others, but even the
strongest of us will snap given the
right circumstances. And when the
smoke clears in this thriller, what
we think we saw and what really
happened may be two different
things. That’s the premise of this
week’s exciting story by a master
storyteller who knows just what
buttons to push to keep you on the
edge of your seat. Be careful you

Author C. J.Box gives us the
thirteenth novel about game warden Joe Pickett. Joe has thousands
of acres of land to cover in Wyoming where he lives with wife, Marybeth, and three daughters.
One day Joe runs into Butch
Roberson, a local contractor who seemed sincere
and hard working. He had a wife and daughter,
Hannah, who was best friends with one of Joe’s
daughters.
This day Butch said he was heading into the
mountains to look for elk. There was nothing suspicious about that, and Joe went about his day. Later
he received a call from Sheriff Reed who told him
that two EPA agents were killed and it looked like
Butch was the killer. Soon the town was crawling
with federal agents, led by one Juan Baptista, who
made his feelings about the local police known at
once. To him, they were all Barney Fifes, the bumbling deputy on the old Andy Griffith Show.
It seems that Butch had purchased a plot of land
to build his dream home on. In steps the EPA and
declared it a wetland. Butch can’t make contact with
anyone in the EPA and instead, they start tacking
on ridiculous fines that pile up every day until Butch
and his wife are at their wit’s end. That’s when the
agents show up and their bodies are found buried
on Butch’s land. When the story about his fight with
the EPA comes out, it makes Butch look more guilty

A group of federal agents are
ordered into the mountains to
bring back Butch, and it’s obvious it doesn’t matter if he comes
back dead or alive. Meanwhile, Joe
starts his own investigation to find
out why this Baptista is so eager
to kill Butch. Joe, as a game warden who knows the area, is also ordered to lead the feds.
Hostages, forest fire, army missiles, and a whole lot of what’s really going on here? makes this a book
you will not want to put down. The
mountain country and the wild
animals that inhabit them are brilliantly described. As Joe goes further along, he begins to question
how this all came about and how it
could have been avoided, and most
of all, what’s the real story?
C. J. Box has based this novel on a real life, similar, situation that happened to a family in Idaho.
Their fight with the EPA resulted in a landmark U.
S. Supreme Court decision just last year.
