appy New Year and Welcome to TYC’s 85th Anniversary
Season! Suzanne and I were delighted to see so many members,
their families and guests at the club’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
This was another over-the-top event with more than 120 celebrants enjoying delicious hors d'oeuvres and outstanding
service catered by TYC members Chef Paul
and Deborah Selak. Bartenders David Price
and Christy Deysher and General Manager
Darren Kramer kept the libations flowing.
One highlight of the party was Suzanne’s
slideshow, “A Year in Pictures,” featuring
more than 300 fabulous images of the past year
from our club photographers Steve Lapkin and
Dick Morton. Thank you to everyone who
helped make this party a great success!
The Future
I know all of you are concerned about
the club’s future, in particular TYC’s physical
location, and I wish to address your concerns
as best I can at this time. While the Board
and I felt last year’s attrition had reduced our
membership to a solid core, it is already evident that we will lose a number of additional
members this renewal period in this still challenging economy. Our club is not unique in
this respect: yacht clubs, country clubs and
other social clubs nationwide are struggling

with a loss of membership and limited new
applicants.
Given the on-going economic uncertainty, we are forced to revisit the strategic plan
presented at the Annual Meeting in September.
It is clear that we will have to scale back our
ambitions for TYC’s facilities and operations. We are fortunate in that we have not yet
made any long-term leasehold commitment
that could jeopardize TYC’s future. The good
news is that we do have a number of options in
a depressed commercial real estate market that
will allow us to secure a facility that meets the
present scale of membership at a cost that fits
within our budget.
The board and club leaders will be meeting for a planning session early in January to
discuss these issues in greater detail and chart
a more conservative course with a revised
budget that will secure our club to weather the
storm. This will be followed by the scheduled
Board of Directors meeting later in the month
at which I hope we can make some decisions
on the future location of our club. Rest assured
that we will make these decisions with careful analysis and diligent consideration; I will
communicate the results of these efforts as
soon as decisions are made. The board and I
welcome member involvement and want to
hear your ideas and concerns for the TYC’s
future. Please contact me directly to discuss
your thoughts.
Membership is the critical lifeblood of
our club. The Board and I need your help in
encouraging current TYC members to maintain their existing membership, recruiting prospective new members, and beginning the
process of re-building our membership base.

20 weeks if you stretch it like me!), TYC offers

January promises to be another exciting
month filled with events for TYC members:
first Penguin Ski Day, January 8 at Squaw
Valley followed by a very special Souper
Saturday with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Warren Lerude on January 9—both of these
events will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of
the Olympics coming to Lake Tahoe and the
60th Anniversary of the founding of Squaw
Valley. Later in the month we have our second Penguin Ski Day at Alpine Meadows
on January 22, followed by the classic TYC
Fondue Potluck on January 23, and a winetasting on January 30.
Suzanne and I look forward to seeing you
at the club. We wish you a healthy and prosperous 2010.

TYC well represented in San Francisco Bay winter racing
Some are content to build frames, drain
water, treat fuel, drape their sailboats with all
manner of cloth, and back their sailboats into
the recesses of the trees, hoping that they can
find them again in spring. However, for some,
the shortened days herald the move to San
Francisco and winter racing. And TYC is well
represented. The traditional kick-off is the Great Pumpkin Regatta, hosted by Richmond Yacht Club,
October 24-25. TYC participants included
Personal Puff, Dan Hauserman’s Melges
24; Arch Angel, a USI sloop owned by
Staff Commodore Bryce Griffith; EUPHORIC, Phil Kanegsberg and Denise Hammond’s
Ultimate 20; and both Farr 36s from the TYC
fleet–Wicked, skippered by Richard Courier,
and Racer X with Gary Redelberger at the
helm. The buoy racing on the first day saw
Personal Puff, Wicked and Racer
X on the podium. Wicked and Personal
Puff were division winners. The pursuit race on October 25 found
Wicked finishing 3rd, Arch Angel, 6th;
Racer X, 14th, EUPHORIC, 44th, and Personal Puff, 45th, out of 161 boats. Commenting on Sunday’s pursuit race, Hauserman,
who serves as TYC’s Sail Committee chair,
said “We succumbed to Raccoon Straights’
fluky winds yet again, sitting in a hole watching about 40 boats go by a quarter mile from
the finish.”

The serious winter racing begins
The serious winter racing started approximately three weeks later. As of this writing,
Bryce Griffith appears to be running the table,
taking two firsts in the Jack Frost Series hosted
by Encinal YC. In the Berkeley Midwinters,
Jim Duffy’s Chinook, a J105, is sitting in
5th place in Division A with EUPHORIC, a

LATITUDE 38 profiles TYC Sail Committee Chairman
Dan Hauserman, TYC’s sail chair, was among seven winning skippers in the Yacht Racing
Association (YRA) of San Francisco Bay profiled in the December issue of LATITUDE 38. From their second installment of 2009 Season Champions Series
featuring winners in One Design classes: “To say that Dan Hauserman is an
ardent Melges 24 sailor is an understatement. Since buying PERSONAL
PUFF in ’03, he’s sailed in three Worlds, two Key West Race Weeks, a
North Americans, Nationals and several PCCs.”
In noting their Northern California Overall Season Champion award,
Hauserman said, “We competed in just enough of the required events between last spring, TYC’s Trans Tahoe, and this fall to qualify.” This fall
also saw them competing in San Francisco’s Melges race week, Sept. 18Dan Hauserman
20. “This was a combined event similar to what we did in the Trans Tahoe.
There were races Friday on our own and then we combined with three races from the Leukemia
Cup (sponsored by San Francisco YC). PERSONAL PUFF took 2nd in the Melges Race Week and
3rd in the Leukemia Cup.”
Congratulations, Dan, and to 16-year-old son, Hayden, who joined his dad for every race!

solid 4th in the Ultimate class. After two races
in the Golden Gate Midwinter’s, Racer X
and Wicked are sitting 2 and 3 points behind
the leaders.
PERSONAL PUFF started their Regatta
Pro midwinter series also in November with a
1,2 finish and have a 2-point lead in the series
which will end in March. As of this writing, the racers are looking
forward to a combination of two weekend
races hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club,
January 15-16. Straddling a completely off-the-charts
party after Saturday racing, the fiends on the
white building’s race deck don pointed hats
and divine courses which crisscross the bay
and periodically spit hapless participants into
the ocean. The only certain mark is a devious
turn up against the Tiburon sea wall which
marks the final length to the finish. It is not
unusual for the various fleets to hit this mark at
the same time, thereby creating certain pandemonium. Viewers are treated to all manner of
excitement as it appears as if some boats will
simply sail into their laps. Racer X is the
two-time defending Champion and currently
looks to be posturing a third defense.

TYC junior member races in Bay Area Laser Youth Series
Nicole DeAngeli, a member of our youth laser team, represented
- in the Bay Area Youth Series (BAYS) Regatta held September 5-6,
in San Francisco Bay at Richmond Yacht Club.
Nicole, who joined TYC as a junior member in
the summer of 2008, put in an outstanding performance in this regatta, finishing 11th out of 26
in the Laser Radial division.
This regatta was part of a series pitting some
of the best youth Laser sailors in California
against the stringent conditions of summer/ fall
sailing in San Francisco as well as against one

another. Some of the reasons that Nicole’s performance is so notable is that she had never raced in San Francisco Bay
previously and that the sailing conditions were so extreme.
On the first day of the regatta the wind was 20-25 knots and strong
tidal currents were present on the course set on South Hampton Shoal
in the main Bay. Nicole said once she got outside the Richmond sea
wall that the waves were huge and that she had not sailed in waves that
big before which caused her learning curve to be steep and involved a
number of capsizes and death rolls.
The races were much longer in length than our Monday Night Laser
races at Tahoe, lasting over an hour for some races. Nicole was careful to
follow her Tahoe Community Sailing coach’s advice, given prior to the
races, by drinking a bottle of water and eating half a power bar after each
race so that she would stay hydrated and have energy for the next race.
The second day of racing also presented her with significant challenges: while the heavy winds from the previous day subsided late on
Sunday morning, the tides became a much more significant factor. Starts
were much more difficult because the current would push the fleet away
from the starting line and made the up-wind legs very technical.
Finishing in the top half of 26 sailors in BAYS showed not only Nicole’s excellent sailing ability, but also her quick adaptability to very different and difficult sailing conditions. “I really learned so much from this
experience and had a great time,” she said. “I really liked sailing against
the other teenagers who were very nice. There was no yelling, swearing or
fighting at the starts, like sometimes happens at our Monday Night races
at Tahoe with the adults,” said the teenager.
Nicole is a senior at Reno High, and plans to attend either Boston
College or Tufts where she intends to be on the sailing team. She is also a
certified U.S. Sailing Small Boat Instructor and teaches in the summer in
the Tahoe Community Sailing Program helping our junior sailors become
masters of the sport of sailing.

As Squaw Valley USA readies for the 50th anniversary
of their hosting of the 1960 Winter Olympics, we were treated to a superb presentation by Staff Commodore Bill Briner
who served as official photographer for those winter games.
Briner first set the scene, taking us back to Wayne Poulsen in
1938, and the beginning of the ski resort that Alex Cushing
improbably “sold” the International Olympic Committee on
for the VIII winter games.
Look for 80 of Bill’s photos featured in the newlypublished book by David Antonucci entitled “Snowball’s
Chance—The Story of the 1960 Winter Games, Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe.”

It’s 6:00 in the morning and dozens of
people are huddled together at the bottom of
Homewood on this cool August morning. The
anticipation rises as we await our shuttle rides
and the beginning of the gruelling journey
ahead of us. We get rides down to Sugarpine
Point, discuss the route, and start skateboarding. It is the beginning of the 6th annual Skate
the Lake event.
More than 100 people came out this year
to longboard 27 miles in an effort to raise
money for breast cancer research in collaboration with Boarding for Breast Cancer.
Two weeks prior to this event, six local
gentlemen including founder Chuck Buckley,
Dave Brumm, Trevor Kecke, and Joe Bok
longboarded the lake in its entirety in two
days to raise awareness for the annual Skate
the Lake event. With the highest attendance in
history, I’d say they did their job.
The Skate the Lake Event starts at
Sugarpine Point, follows the bike path to
Squaw, back to Lake Forest, and finally ends
in Tahoe City at Dave’s Boardshop. It was a
long but fun and rewarding day.
Boarding for Breast Cancer is a fund that
was founded in 1996 by female snowboarders, including long-time Tahoe snowboarder
Tina Basich. Various events are held each
year with the proceeds going to the Susan G.
Komen breast cancer research fund. Within
the past decade Boarding for Breast Cancer
has expanded its horizons with the help of
those like Chuck Buckley by holding skate-
boarding and surfing events.
Tahoe Yacht Club sponsored my entry fee
for the event, which benefited the charity. If

As this years MNF comes to a close, I
would like to thank everyone for wonderful
food and friendship. Once again it was a banner season and I think I can speak for everyone
that we all had fun. We had many winners of
the pool and some great potluck dishes.
But now comes the biggest football potluck of them all for SUPER BOWL XLIV, Sunday, Feb. 7.
The football action (at Dolphin Stadium
Miami, Florida) will be played out live on nationwide TV beginning at 6 p.m. ET, which
puts the kickoff at approximately 3:28 p.m.
Tahoe time.
As we go “online,” 10 teams have made
the playoffs; the final two are anyone’s guess.
For certain is the half-time entertainment—
legendary rock and roll band, The Who —
some pretty amazing commercials, and some
pretty tasty “potluck” food at the club to tide
