Join us and think like an engineer at Summer
Camp!
Meet our Camp
Instructors!
Kristen, Jazmin, and Moises are the
2011 summer camp instructors.
Read more about them below.
Kristen Shumake
I studied Mechanical Engineering at
The University of Southern
California. I am very excited to teach
experiments such as wind turbines
and robotics. I love teaching and
cannot wait to build all of the fun
experiments we have this summer!
Fight on!
Animals as our Engineering
Inspiration
July 11 - 15, 2011
Ages: 6-10
When attempting to create manmade flying machines,
both Leonardo da Vinci and the Wright brothers studied
the way birds fly!
Today, scientists and engineers continue to study animals
to get inspiration for new inventions and technologies.
Children will learn how animals are inspiring new
technologies from airplanes to wind turbines. In this camp
we will think like engineers and pay close attention to the

I am a first-generation Latino student
at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie,
New York with a double major in
Mathematics and Latin American and
Latina/o Studies. I am excited to
interact with K-12 students from
similar backgrounds and gain
experience in science education. I
aspire to become an awesome
mathematics teacher for students
from low-income communities.

animal world to create things that help create things in
spired animals and use it to improve our own lives.
One of nature's most skilled engineers, the honeybee!

Musical Instrument
Engineering
July 18 - 22, 2011
Ages 6-10
Help us think like engineers and explore the physics of
sound!
Musical instruments create sound by vibrating in different
ways. Children will investigate the physics of sound using
musical instruments that they create. Campers will learn
how sound is made and how sound travels through
different materials.
I am studying Mechanical Engineering
at the University of Southern
California. I'm really excited to have
the opportunity to impact a younger
generation by giving them the
chance to be engineers for a couple
of days. I know we're going to have
lots of fun!
All camps run
Monday – Friday
from 9am–3pm. The
cost is $300 per
week. Camps will be
held at the Iridescent
Science Studio:
532 W. 22rd Street,
LA 90007

Playful Inventions
August 1 - 5, 2011
Ages: 8-12
Playful Inventions is an approach to using new
technologies that integrates art, science, and engineering.
The goal is to enable children to create, invent, and
explore. This course will teach computer programming
using the PicoCricket Kit. Participants will design and
program their own artistic creations with lights, sound,
music, and motion.
Invention with art and technology!
