I am pleased to report that we are in the swing of another great season here at Boca Pointe Country Club, with all of our members getting together with friends and partaking in all of the great programs and amenities offered at our great Club. Wrapping up 2007 was the highly successful 7th Annual Andy Roddick Foundation Celebrity Tennis Exhibition, which was held here on December 9. Andy’s charity event raises money for organizations that help children in distress. A very worthy cause that helps change the future of so many deserving children. I am very pleased to tell you that the Roddick Foundation has already raised over $2 million this year! It was wonderful to see such a packed house with everyone enjoying the many activities, including a Pro-Am, children’s programs, vendors and raffles. And, since Andy Roddick and James Blake won this year’s Davis Cup, the actual Davis Cup was here at Boca Pointe for all to see. This was very exciting, since it is the first time in many years that the U.S. team has won the coveted Davis Cup. Highlighting the event was a wonderful tennis exhibition put on by Andy Roddick, James Blake, two-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova and Brenda Schultz. Also, our own Howie Weinstein got to play a round of tennis with the stars! The success of this event was due in large part to the enormous efforts of so many people including Joyce and Marvin Bloshinsky, Howie Weinstein and the dedicated and faithful Boca Pointe Staff. Many thanks for a job well done. I am also pleased to inform you that the Task Force formed by the Country Club and the Community Association is off and running, working on identifying and implementing the best and most cost-effective ways to make Boca Pointe the premiere country club community in South Florida. I also realize that the members have a sense of uncertainty about what is actually going on within the Task Force. At this point, I can only tell you that we are working with the Community Association looking for joint solutions to issues dealing with both the Country Club and the Community Association. They have come up with an overall concept, but until there is a definite plan that can be presented to you, there is nothing more specific to report. Until that time, please be positive about the future of Boca Pointe and do not buy into the rumors and speculation. I look forward to reporting on their progress in the very near future. Board Message Directory Board Message Also, by the time you receive this letter, candidates for the Board will have submitted their resumes, which will be mailed to you shortly. I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of getting to know the candidates who are running for your Board. You will have a critical decision to make — to vote for those people who bring the most knowledge, experience, and commitment to the position. Serving as a Board member is a very difficult job requiring a large time commitment and the ability to meet the needs of the members while controlling costs and providing a multitude of amenities and services. I highly recommend that you study the resumes carefully and attend the Meet the Candidates night on Monday, February 4 at 7p.m. After having the opportunity to hear each candidate speak, you should then submit your ballots for those candidates who you feel will do the best job for the Club. I look forward to continuing to keep you updated as to all the exciting happenings at Boca Pointe Country Club, and to seeing you around the Club! Welcome Back Clinic 10 11 Fitness & Spa healthy happenings WE HOPE THIS NEWSLETTER FINDS ALL OUR clients in good health and the best of spirits now that 2008 is here. Where do the years go? Season is well underway but remember in the rush of everyday life and your busy schedules, we need to take time to reflect on the things, both large and small, that you have to be thankful for. We have so much! Everyone here at the spa hopes you have the best year ever. Fitness & Spa A few reminders to help you make the most from your visit to the spa especially if you are a first timer. • Turn off your cell phone when you arrive. • Arrive at least 20 minutes before your appointment to allow yourself time to check in, change into your robe and slippers, and take a steam or a sauna. It will help you relax. • A hot shower will also relax you before your spa treatment whether you are having a massage, body scrub or facial. • Massage is always done unclothed and you are covered with a sheet at all times in a dimly lit room. However if you are uncomfortable with this and want to keep your underwear on that is fine. Try reflexology where you are clothed. • If you schedule two treatments together remember a massage should be taken before a facial and a body treatment before a massage. Nails should always be last on the agenda. • If you feel uncomfortable with anything during a massage, whether it be the music, the pressure or the temperature tell your therapist. Don’t suffer in silence. • It’s your choice to stay quiet or talk during a treatment. The therapist will follow your lead. • If your therapist tells you to take your time getting up don’t take it literally! It usually means rest for a few minutes and get up slowly. • Don’t forget to tip 15 - 20%. If you were given a Gift Certificate always ask if the tip was included. Gift Certificates are a perfect way to say Thank You, I Love You, Congratulations or Have A Nice Day. The Spa is open Tuesday - Saturday. Consultations are always free. Please call Wendy at 864-8552. 12 JANUARY KEEP THE PRESSURE DOWN… LEARN HOW TO CONTROL HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE High blood pressure can damage internal organs and blood vessels without showing any initial symptoms. That’s why it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly and to learn what you can do to help maintain a healthy heart. In the Fitness Department we can check your blood pressure daily. THE DANGERS OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE The higher your blood pressure, the harder your heart has to work to pump blood through your body. Over time, high blood pressure can cause your heart to enlarge and make your arteries less flexible. These conditions increase your risk of having a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. High blood pressure becomes a more serious threat to your health as it gets higher. WHAT YOU CAN DO? Your lifestyle greatly influences your blood pressure, and making simple lifestyle changes can often make a big difference. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Eat more fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods and whole grains. • Start exercising. Add a half-hour walk to your daily routine. Be sure to talk with your doctor before beginning any new exercise program. • Skip the salt. Cut back on your salt intake by avoiding processed foods (check the salt content on all processed food labels), using the salt shaker sparingly and not cooking with salt. • If you smoke, stop. Smoking usually does not affect blood pressure, but if you have high pressure, smoking increases your risk for blood cardiovascular disease. • Take medication as prescribed. If you have side effects from your medication, work with your doctor. Don’t stop taking you medication without your doctor’s approval. The first step toward controlling high blood pressure is knowing you have it. If you can't remember when you last had your blood pressure checked, call your doctor for an appointment. But for those of you who do, the memories remain crystal clear when the chance to compete as adults in a variety of games and sports becomes a reality. At Boca Pointe, Color War has become an annual event. It begins with members reserving their spot on a team. And to become a team participant, Color War Breaks in early fall when we gather and names are drawn. At dinner, members become part of the Red, Blue, Green or Yellow Team and Captains are introduced. A surprise is planned signaling the beginning of Color War. The first year a Fire Engine appeared at the Clubhouse; the second year, a High School marching band entertained near the Golf Pro Shop and this year, the Team Captains, dressed as Indians, performed in the main dining room! All teams meet and plan their strategy for the weekend of competition which follows. Outside judges and inside coordinators help to keep the variety of events running smoothly. Beginning months in advance, Howie Weinstein, Carol Kaye, Jerry Adelson and Eileen Kleinman discuss and work out time lines for all the activities which make up Color War Weekend. Looking ahead, future plans are being made to change the theme and several events to keep games fresh. Of course, favorites will be retained like softball, volleyball, tennis, water sports, team cheers, banners and skits. Past games have included bingo, trivia, a scavenger hunt, ping pong, bocce ball, neighborhood games, fun golf, relay races, and a watermelon eating contest. The final competition, a dance contest, is held Sunday evening at a special Awards Dinner Dance. The scoreboard is unveiled and everyone can view final team scores. The winning team is announced (Blue Black Foot this year), the Color War Trophy is presented to the Champions and blue ribbons awarded. If you want to experience something a little different at Boca Pointe, don’t miss out. Stay tuned in - because there’s more excitement ahead in Color War IV! Thanks to all the Captains, past and present, for their hard work: Aggie Winthrop, Arlene Berkwich, Arline Brotspies, Barry Oster, Chuck Kaufman, David Mondschein, Elaine Siegel, Jerry Kaye, Iran Gratzon, Joyce Bloshinsky, Lisa Moskovitz, Marvin Lazarowitz, Mary Weinstein, Rich Seiden, Roberta Pheifer, Sandy Porten, Shelly Apel, Steve Drandoff, and Stu Itzkowitz. — By Eileen Kleinman III Photo Gallery Photo Gallery COLOR WAR COMES IN FOUR COLORS! 17 Photo Gallery Photo Gallery 18 Photo Gallery Photo Gallery color war 19 Photo Gallery Photo Gallery Photo Gallery tree trimming Introducing Boca Pointe Country Club Real Estate Direct A unique and exciting concept in real estate marketing and sales created exclusively for Boca Pointe homeowners.
