Welcome to CurlManitoba`s
Welcome to
CurlManitoba’s
Strathcona Trust Senior Men’s
Provincial Championship
Beausejour Curling Club
February 23 – 27, 2012
Message from CurlManitoba President Resby Coutts
Manitoba curling is in a time of
change – a time when
CurlManitoba, as an organization,
is seeing the implementation of a
new governance philosophy. It is a
philosophy which re-focuses the
attention of your association on a
healthy future for our sport by
focussing on the health of our
member clubs and facilities.
It is a philosophy which springs
from a recognition that our sport
faces challenges – the challenges of aging facilities, the challenges of
competition for people’s time and disposable income, the challenges of an
increasing gap between the elite competitor and the rest.
It is a philosophy which challenges each of us to contribute to the sport to
ensure that curling has a future in Manitoba. CurlManitoba recognizes the
importance of championships, and of striving for championships. However, it
recognizes that the legacy of excellence in Manitoba curling has sprung from
a strong, but diminishing, base of Manitoba curling clubs.
The Mission Statement of CurlManitoba defines the challenge we all
face: To promote, develop and grow the sport of curling in Manitoba, Canada
and the world by providing leadership, services and programs for the curling
community from grassroots to elite.
The reference to Canada & the world define our responsibility to
continue to be a resource to curling outside the provincial boundary. However,
the mission statement primarily recognizes that championships will grow from
a strong base where curlers play the game for the joy of the game in vibrant
local facilities.
No doubt, our Senior competitors understand this better than most and
I ask for your support of CurlManitoba’s focus on our clubs just as you have
supported our clubs in the past. To each of you as Senior Curling
Championship competitors, I extend best wishes as you continue a career of
competition among long-time rivals and friends.
And on behalf of all of the CurlManitoba, I extend sincere thanks to the
sponsors and volunteer organizers of the 2011-12 Strathcona Trust Senior
Men’s Championship.

Message from the Beausejour Curling Club
We extend a warm welcome from Beausejour Curling Club to all competitors,
spectators, Curl Manitoba and media at this Strathcona Senior Men’s
Provincial Curling Championship.
Congratulations to all the competitors for winning your regional or zone
competition. We wish you great curling, super ice and good luck and hope you
will take away fond memories of this event and your visit to Beausejour.
Thank you to the spectators for your support and interest. The Strathcona
Senior Men’s promises to be an excellent display of exceptional curling and
good sportsmanship with the additional benefit of wisdom that we have come
to expect from “seniors.” Please avail yourself of the amenities of our club and
the service of our friendly staff and volunteers.
Thank you to Curl Manitoba Board and staff, in particular, Cole Skinner, for
your help in getting ready to stage this event. The host committee and
Beausejour Curling Club appreciate the opportunity we have to host this event
and showcase our club and community, especially during this, the 100th
Anniversary of our town of Beausejour.
Finally, we thank the media for their coverage of this event and the positive
impact they play in promoting this sport which we enjoy.
If there is anything our guests at this event require or any assistance you
need, please approach any of our volunteers and they will do all they can to
assist you.
Enjoy the curling and your stay in Beausejour.
Check out the many events taking place in Beausejour during our Centennial

A brief history of
Strathcona Curling Club
On a Sunday morning in 1908 after church, three men
got to talking. From that casual chat of R.J. Gourley,
J.T. Haig, and Walter Payne, the formation of the
Strathcona Curling Club began. The contract for the
building was signed December 29, 1908 and the rink
was ready for curling by February 1, 1909.
The five sheet club was located just north of Portage
Avenue between Furby and Langside Streets. This
facility served its members until the end of the
1967/68 season when the club’s property was sold.
The Club itself operated in other facilities until the
end of the 1981/82 season.
This championship is sponsored by the Strathcona Curling Club. The original trustees
are Jack Callum, Lyle Henry, and Bruce M. Hudson. Bob Scales has taken Lyle
Henry’s position for the 2009 season onward. The trustees are in care of the
presentation of trust funds to Curl Manitoba to conduct the Provincial Senior Men’s
Curling Championship in perpetuity. The Championship has been in existence since
1985.
The Strathcona Trophy, emblematic of the Provincial Senior Men’s Championship, is
presented for annual competition to recognize the contribution to curling made by the
Strathcona at the executive and competitive levels, nationally, provincially and
locally.
Three members of the club served as President of the Dominion Curling Association
(forerunner of the CCA) - Senator John T. Haig, Gordon M. Hudson, and Jack
Dutton. Nine members served as President of the MCA -Senator John T. Haig, John
S. McDiarmid, Robert J. Gourley, Gordon M. Hudson, Clifford R. Hudson, Jack
Dutton, J. Ken Watson, Leo E. Johnson, and Bruce M. Hudson.
On the ice, Strathcona’s rinks captured seven Brier Championships – Gordon M.
Hudson (1928 & ‘29), Robert J. Gourley (1931), Leo E. Johnson (1934) and J. Ken
Watson (1936, ‘42 & ‘49). In addition to the Brier winners, Strathcona rinks won
eleven more provincial championships with Ross Kennedy, Albert Wakefield, J. Ken
Watson, Leo Johnson (2), Roy Forsyth (2), Mac Scales, Norm Houck, and Bruce M.
Hudson (2) as skips.
The Strathcona Curling Club has forever etched its name in the history books of
curling in Manitoba and Canada and although it ceases to exist as a club entity, it lives
on through its Curling Championship namesake.
