MISSION STATEMENT
Former Youth Advisory Board
T
he Emery S. Hetrick Award (or “Emery”) for Outstanding Contributions to Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth is presented annually to individuals or organizations that meet these young people’s critical needs.
The Emery S. Hetrick Award (or “Emery”) for Outstanding Contributions to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender and Questioning Youth is presented annually to individuals or organizations that
meet these young people’s critical needs. Emery S. Hetrick, a psychiatrist, activist, researcher, artist,
and musician is best remembered for his thoughtful and creative leadership in the lesbian and gay
community. Emery, along with his partner, A. Damien Martin, founded the Institute for the Protection
of Lesbian and Gay Youth (IPLGY), now known as The Hetrick-Martin Institute, and was instrumental
in transforming the Institute from an advocacy group to an organization that provides comprehensive services for lesbian and gay youth. Emery was the first psychiatrist hired by the Ackerman
Family Institute, which pioneered family therapy, and in the 1960s was part of a mobile crisis team
that brought mental health home visits into building and housing projects that no one else would
enter. In the 1970s, he was one of the founders of Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE),
today known as Service and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders, and
the New York Psychiatric Association. Emery was also a driving force behind the formation of a gay
caucus inside the American Psychiatric Association, which helped eradicate the profession’s view
of homosexuality as a mental illness. When he died of AIDS in 1987, he was a director for medical
research at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in New York.

About Hetrick-Martin
The Hetrick-Martin Institute, founded in 1979, is the oldest and largest non-for-profit, multi-service
agency dedicated to serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, providing a broad range of vital programming, including educational services for at-risk youth in The
Harvey Milk High School; individual, group, and family counseling; concrete services and case
management for homeless and at-risk teenagers through supportive services; social and cultural
activities; health and wellness activities; and career exploration and youth leadership offered
through after-school services. The Institute serves youth from the five boroughs of New York City
and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Despite these difficult economic times, this has been a tremendous year of growth for HMI in the
vital services we offer. Recognizing the dramatic needs of many LGBTQ youth reaching adulthood, and those important rites of passage not afforded them due to their years of stigma and
isolation, we’ve increased our ages served from 21 to now 24 years old; a critical trend now
being recognized by other organizations across the country. We have expanded our hours of
operation Monday through Friday until 8pm, doubled our hot meal program in the last four years
to over 8,000 hot meals served, and are now approaching the 2,000 mark for young people
served directly on-site - 90% of whom are youth of color and most in need of our services. Within
our space, young people can avail themselves of our homeless pantry services offering them a hot
shower, clean clothes, a Metrocard, and mental health counseling, while our after-school programs
offer academic enrichment, job readiness, health & wellness, and arts & cultural programming within
a safe haven - free of bias, prejudice and fear. While our numbers increased at 2 Astor Place, our
social media youth-led programs training peers via the internet have helped us to reach an additional 6,000 more youth around the world. Help and Education are truly just a mouse click away!
But still, this was not enough for the nation’s oldest and largest LGBTQ youth services organization,
for the first time in our over three decades of serving youth, we have established a new center in
Newark, New Jersey, one that will become the first comprehensive LGBTQ youth after-school program in the city’s history!
While we’ve focused our energies around strategic growth and the world beyond our front doors,
we have not forgotten our responsibilities to our young people. We continue to utilize our longstanding hallmark programs and services, and our commitment as vanguards for a bully-free educational environment - Harvey Milk High School. Harvey Milk High School continues to produce
top-notch graduates in a school designed to provide a public education regardless of a young
person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. HMI continues to provide mental, health and supportive services, as well as academic enrichment and scholarship opportunities, so that these
young people can assume the fulll mantle of citizenship and thrive as adults. We remain committed
to this erstwhile cause and are proud of our founding and continued relationship.
Yet amidst this impressive time of growth and expansion at Hetrick-Martin, a wave of tragedy is gripping our community. The heartbreaking accounts of LGBTQ suicides across the country serves as
a constant reminder of just how much is as stake here tonight. As we gather in this fabulous event
space, let us not forget what it was like so many years ago when you were that teenage boy or
girl, sitting in school or at home, full of panic, fear and despair, feeling isolated, thinking that you
were the only one in the world who felt this way; told you were unworthy, made to feel unloved, and
unprotected from threats of violence. These suicides and acts of bullying strike a chord within our
very souls as we remember what it was like at that most vulnerable stage of our life.

Welcome to the 24th Annual Emery Awards benefitting The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI). I am
thrilled and honored to share this evening with you. It’s been a long time coming and, in truth, the
road that led us here this evening has been one fraught with many perils and pitfalls, making it most
bittersweet.

Dear Hetrick-Martin Family Members,
While the documented responses by the LGBTQ community, as well as those of our straight allies
have been both inspiring and humbling, I remind us all here tonight the importance of not just offering hope, and waiting for things to get better, but providing the critical assistance on a daily basis
to these youth in the “here and now.” That is what has driven HMI since its inception over 30 years
ago: make life better for our youth today, recognizing them for the wonderful beings that they are,
perfect in their creation, they add their own special and unique thread to the tapestry that is our
world. Your presence here tonight is helping to ensure that it will indeed get better for these youth;
they too will be able to grow and mature into caring adults such as yourselves and enjoy the bright
and amazing future that all of you here this evening represent. Thank you for being a part of our
evening; thank you for being a part of their future. Finally, I thank you for helping us to provide our
young people with an opportunity of a lifetime!

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Hetrick-Martin Institute’s Board of Directors, welcome to the 24th Annual Emery
Awards. We are honored to have you join us tonight and would like to express our profound gratitude for your tremendous support throughout the year.
As we gather here tonight, we are reminded, now more than ever, of how critical it is to provide help
and support to our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. The recent suicides and reports
of bullying underscore what it means for an organization such as HMI to exist, to have a place for
those who have been rejected, shunned, harmed and marginalized by everyone else. Hearing
these stories of young people who had nowhere else to turn but to a desire to no longer exist is
beyond heartbreaking. It is inexcusable. And that is what drives all of us at HMI. It is why we reach
out to thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth who are at risk. It is why we ensure
that they have the very basic things a person needs just to get through the day. And it is why we
dedicate each day to making sure they know that they are special and that they are loved.
This has been a very exciting year for Hetrick-Martin. From greatly expanding the number of youth
served on-site to utilizing on-line media and networking to reach those beyond our region, we are
making a bigger impact than ever before. We are particularly proud of our new center in Newark,
New Jersey, the city’s first that caters directly to the needs of its LGBTQ youth. And it is with the
generosity and support of all of you here tonight that makes these advancements possible, and
for that, we can barely begin to express how incredibly grateful we are. We are all aware of what
a difficult economic time this has been for everyone and yet, in spite of all of this hardship, HMI has
diligently worked to make this one our most successful years ever!
On a personal note, let us add what an honor it has been for us to be associated with HetrickMartin. To commit time and effort to a cause we believe in so deeply has been a deeply humbling
and life-changing experience. And to see on a daily basis the impact HMI has on our LGBTQ
youth just continues to amaze and inspire us. We are thrilled that HMI remains at the forefront of
helping our youth and for serving as model for similar organizations and programs throughout the
country. And as the sharp rise in services over the past year reminds us, these efforts are needed
more than ever before.
Tonight, we pay tribute to three individuals whose work and dedication to the LGBTQ community
and our youth have made a real difference in all of our lives. They truly represent the best of our
community and our allies, and for that, it is our honor to pay them the special acknowledgment they
so richly deserve.

Our first honoree tonight is a woman who pioneered the use of on-line news and commentary as
a global platform for free speech and progressive causes. Arianna Huffington’s passionate commitment to free expression has helped countless gays and lesbians and straight allies give voice
to our cause. Just as Hetrick-Martin Institute provides a safe environment for LGBTQ youth to thrive
and express themselves, so too has Ms. Huffington provided a space for LGBTQ advocates of all
ages and backgrounds to express themselves.
Our second honoree has been a longtime supporter of Hetrick-Martin Institute and defender of
equal rights for our community. Not only is Marc Ecko one of the world’s most successful designers,
he is also a role model and icon for LGBTQ youth. His support of HMI has been of vital importance to our success and our future.
Our final honoree tonight is an artist who has revolutionized the representation of our community in
the entertainment industry. Ryan Murphy’s eloquent and compelling portrayal of not only gays and
lesbians but of all persons who fall outside of the “mainstream” has been met with not only industry
accolades but also an incredibly wide fan following. His most recent success with the blockbuster
television series ‘Glee’ has truly given every one of us something to sing about.
Finally, let us conclude by making special mention of our incredibly hard-working and dedicated
staff at Hetrick-Martin Institute, our many volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and efforts
on our behalf, and our fellow Board members who continually amaze us with the dedication and

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is an eight month internship. The members are charged with representing the Hetrick-Martin youth population to The Hetrick-Martin Board of Directors, Program
management and Program staff. The YAB also represents Hetrick-Martin in the greater LGBTQ and
non-LGBTQ community. The goals of the YAB are to represent their peers, learn how to impact

Over the years, his portfolio has expanded to include an array of progressive men’s and women’s lifestyle
brands including: *Ecko Unltd, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew, Zoo York, and Complex Magazine and Media Network.
In 2005, Marc established Sweat Equity Enterprises (SEE) as an after-school program based in his corporate
headquarters. SEE was created to give students access to opportunities and experiences not typically
found in the classroom. Through SEE, students work on real-world business challenges with corporate and
non-profit partners.
In 2006, Marc launched Marc Ecko Entertainment and released his first-ever video game through Atari called
“Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.” It was well-received by gamers and critics, selling approximately onemillion units and winning an MTV Video Music Award for “Best Videogame Soundtrack.” Today, Marc Ecko
Entertainment is focused on creating branded mobile content and social media, with Showtime recently enlisting its services to execute interactive strategies surrounding the Emmy award-winning series, “Dexter.”

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON
Marc Ecko was born Marc Milecofsky in Lakewood, New Jersey in 1972. In the mid-80s while still in high school,
Marc’s artistic journey began in a makeshift design studio housed within his parents’ garage. As a dedicated
member of the then emerging hip-hop scene, Marc garnered interest from the generation’s new cultural icons
like Spike Lee and Chuck D, who wore his custom T-shirts with pride. These auspicious events precipitated his
founding of *Ecko Unltd. in 1993 at the age of twenty.
Arianna Huffington is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, a nationally syndicated
columnist, and author of thirteen books. Her latest, Third World America, published in September 2010,
chronicles the struggles of America’s besieged middle class. She is also co-host of “Left, Right & Center,”
public radio’s popular political roundtable program, and “Both Sides Now,” a weekly syndicated radio
show with Mary Matalin and Mark Green. She is a frequent guest on television shows such as Charlie Rose,
Real Time with Bill Maher, This Week with Christiane Amanpour, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The
Rachel Maddow Show.
In May 2005, she launched The Huffington Post, a news and blog site that has quickly become one of the
most widely-read, linked to, and frequently-cited media brands on the Internet. She was named to the Time
100, Time Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people, and to the Financial Times’ list of 50
people who shaped the decade.
Originally from Greece, she moved to England when she was 16 and graduated from Cambridge University
with an M.A. in economics. At 21, she became president of the famed debating society, the Cambridge
Union.
On the media front, Marc is the majority shareholder and creator of Complex Magazine and the Complex
Media Network, which boasts more than 20M unique users and 250M page views monthly.

Ryan Murphy is the Golden Globe® Award-winning creator, writer, and director of FX’s original drama series
“Nip/Tuck” and the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe® Award-winning Fox series “Glee”.
Murphy began his career as a journalist, writing for such publications as The Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times,
The New York Daily News and Entertainment Weekly. His screenwriting career began in the late 1990’s when
Steven Spielberg purchased his romantic comedy “Why Can’t I Be Audrey Hepburn?”. Murphy’s next effort was
The WB’s Popular, an award-winning black comedy/satire which he created and produced with his fellow “Nip/
Tuck” executive producers Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin.
In 2003, Murphy’s “Nip/Tuck” premiered on the FX Network. The show would soon become one of the network’s
most popular and most well-known series. “Nip/Tuck” was named to the American Film Institute’s list of the 10
Best Television Shows of 2003 and 2004 and was the only first-year drama series in 2004 to earn a Golden
Globe® Award for Best TV Series, Drama. In 2004, Murphy earned an Emmy® Award nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
A star of stage and screen, Matthew Morrison has been nominated for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
Morrison currently stars in “Glee,” Fox’s hit musical comedy series from Ryan Murphy. In the show, Morrison stars
as Will Schuester, an optimistic high school teacher who tries to refuel his own passion while reinventing the
high school’s glee club and challenging a group of outcasts to realize their star potential. Morrison will next be
releasing his debut solo album with Mercury Records in early 2011.
Morrison studied musical theater, vocal performance and dance at New York University’s renowned Tisch
School of the Arts. His big Broadway break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit “Hairspray.” Morrison was later nominated for a Tony Award for his role in “The Light in the Piazza,” and received a
Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for “10 Million Miles.” He also starred in the Tony
Winning revival of “South Pacific” at Lincoln Center Theater in New York.
A California native, Morrison divides his time between Los Angeles and New York.
In 2006 Murphy expanded to the big screen by writing, directing and producing his adaptation of the bestselling book “Running with Scissors” starring Annette Bening and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Murphy is currently in production on the smash hit Fox Television series “Glee”, which won the Golden Globe
Award for Best Television Series Comedy/Musical and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast
in a Comedy Series. “Glee” was the highest nominated television series at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
Ryan currently has Emmy nominations for Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writer
for a Comedy Series.

Williams grew up in Ocean Township, New Jersey and currently lives in Northern New Jersey with her husband
Kevin Hunter and their 9-year-old son, Kevin, Jr. Williams attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in communications with a minor in journalism.

Williams was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame (only the second African American woman to
be honored by the organization) in November 2009. She is the author of two New York Times best sellers,
Wendy’s Got The Heat by Simon & Schuster and The Wendy Williams Experience by Dutton Books, as well as
several novels. Her latest book, Ritz Harper Goes to Hollywood , the third installment in her series of Ritz Harper

Called a “breakthrough in daytime,” by The New York Times, Wendy Williams burst onto the national talk show
scene in July 2009 with the launch of her daily, syndicated program, “The Wendy Williams Show.” A mother, wife
and best-selling author, Williams’ built a devoted cult following from her years as one of radio’s most popular
personalities, winning over legions of fans who couldn’t wait to see the host make her television debut. Touted
by People Magazine as one of the “best shows of 2009”, the critically-acclaimed series now has the distinction of being “must-see TV” and is now in its 2nd season.
Bethenny Frankel’s wisdom and humor first came to national attention when she was named first runner-up on
NBC’s “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.” Network executives saw a personality they couldn’t ignore and put
her center stage on Bravo’s hit series “The Real Housewives of New York” for three seasons. She emerged as
the star of the series, with a huge network of fans, which led Bravo to create a spin-off series, “Bethenny Getting
Married?” that premiered with the highest ratings ever in Bravo history.
Bethenny Frankel has a knack for making healthy food taste delicious. That knack, which started out as a
hobby and was enhanced with formal training, has elevated her to national prominence as a celebrated
natural food chef, the creator of the sought-after Skinnygirl Margarita, The New York Times best-selling author
of Naturally Thin and The Skinnygirl Dish, and a spokesperson for Pepperidge Farm. Frankel, who calls herself a
“health foodie” and attended the National Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts, focuses on sharing

Teams will be given their own link and web page and compete against each other to raise $3,000. For more

CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUTH
The Hetrick-Martin after-school Job Readiness program provides youth the opportunity to explore the world of
work through workshops and internships. Your involvement allows young people to receive in-depth information and interaction with corporate employees in a range of businesses.
YOUTH EVENTS AND FIELD TRIPS
Corporations can sponsor and underwrite an event, such as a youth art exhibition at a gallery, a block party/
open house, our youth holiday party, or our Pride celebration and/or float. Corporations are also invited to
broaden the experiences, by underwriting and accompanying a group of chaperoned youth on a field trip.
HOST A LUNCHEON OR COCKTAIL PARTY
Corporations are encouraged to host industry fundraisers or meet-and-greet events in their corporate event
space or elsewhere.
Does your workplaces match gifts to charitable organizations? If so, you can effectively
double your contribution to HMI.
HOST A PARTY
Hosting a party for HMI is a great way to contribute firsthand and share us with your
friends. Consider planning a cocktail party, brunch, or other unique cultivation event.
VOLUNTEER
Possess an in-demand skill? Why not share your abilities! HMI is always looking for
dedicated volunteers on our fundraising and special events committees.
DONATE TO EDUCATE
Raise awareness and contributions online.
Every dollar helps provide much-needed services for at-risk
LGBTQ youth. That’s why HMI launched “Donate to Educate.” If everyone gives just
$30, we can give young people the opportunities of a lifetime.
These opportunities provide both volunteers and youth with a unique opportunity to inspire, engage with, and learn
from each other. In addition, most volunteer opportunities will include:
- A press release announcing the adoption of
the event or program*
- A write-up about the event in our E-newsletter,
which is sent to over 5,000 Hetrick-Martin supporters*
- Placement of the corporation’s name Iin our
annual Emery program book
