As the convention chair, I would like to give sincere thanks to the entire Louisiana volunteer team who were the true backbone to the board in making this convention a triumph. I feel very confident in saying that each Leuva Patidar including the LPS board, the great volunteers, and the supportive attendees gained something of significance and merit at the convention. Personally, it is a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to humbly serve as your current LPS of USA President for 2011-2012. Furthermore, I am truly excited to continue the excellent work done by our former presidents and boards. I would like to thank those who have accomplished so many achievements which continuously improve the strength and unity of Leuva Patidars from all over the United States. LPS of USA is a non-profit organization cultivating unity and providing a platform for generations to preserve our religion, culture, and heritage through society, education, and communication. The organization’s ultimate goals are to bring awareness, as well as promote and preserve our heritage and cultural traditions of the Leuva Patidars in the USA. Every community and society has its precious heritage which must be passed on and it is our society’s responsibility to transfer that heritage to the next generation, which is our Leuva youth. In the upcoming weeks we will be scheduling a meeting with the current board in New Orleans, Louisiana to strategically plan the future of our association. We must also remember that serving on the board is a volunteer effort, meaning the entire board travels on their own expense and dedicates their time for the betterment of the association. At this upcoming meeting we will be creating several committees with goals, which if unaccomplished may be passed on to the next president, such as: 1. Directory Committee – Produce an updated directory 2. By-Laws, Policies, & Procedures – Review and recommend changes to our current by-laws 3. Unity & Leadership Conference – Promote leadership skills and unity 4. Lifetime Membership & Financial Freedom – Achieve lifetime or annual membership and revenue stream 5. Youth & Women’s Conference – Network and build relationships through conferences 6. Wow what a year! It has been a wonderful journey personally for me and my entire board. Rain or shine, our goal stays same: as I’ve said before, LPS of USA has one goal and one goal only, to pass on our colorful culture and rich heritage to our new generation and generations to come. As the new year for LPS of USA begins, the old board moves on and new board hails in, but our duties are same or rather increase. LPS of USA has set a goal to achieve financial sustainability. In the past, financial crunch was a norm for LPS of USA. Back then the board worked very hard to grow our association and thanks to them our association now has more than 4500 families in our database. But today, time has changed. We need funds for youth activities, senior programs and daily operation. The Founding Member Partnership program is very handy for achieving this goal of financial sustainability year on year. Thanks to Hasubhai Patel, Jayesh Patel and Kirit Patidar, along with the entire board, we’ve managed to lift this program to the next level. Now the control is entirely in their hands to take the Founding member partnership program to even a higher level! We have completed the year with 150 new lifetime members ($150,000.00) and the membership including annual membership of 4500 families. Our daily operation and convention are both profitable. The top seven officers, EC Board and other board of directors have traveled extensively during the past year attending 25 town halls, regional and other meetings across the country. Now, more about the LPS of USA Convention in the Bayou state of Louisiana. What a success for LPS of USA! More than 2,500 people (including 1000 youth) attended the convention that also saw the participation of 90 vendors for the trade show. Be it the speakers; the seminars for young and old; as well as the wonderful women’s session organized by Nancy Patel; we could tell from the faces of the attendees that they enjoyed the events! Thanks to Sunilbhai, the youth activities were a tremendous hit while security for the youth was provided by Kirit Patidar. Thanks to all the leaders from Louisiana and to each and every volunteer from the state. I mean young and old, men and women: wow, you picked up all tasks without any hesitation! Without you our National Convention would not be this successful! You have done a wonderful job of fulfilling your community duty. You have sacrificed your time and enjoyment for the LPS of USA National Convention in your own city of New Orleans, and to make sure that members are handsomely taken care of ! My hats off to you, ladies and gentlemen, you have worked tirelessly around the clock, yes around the clock, to show your southern hospitality. Folks, let me tell you, you have achieved that goal and you have achieved it in style, we are very proud of you! I would really like to thank all of you again from the bottom of my heart. The successful hard work of Louisiana’s leaders and volunteers has encouraged LPS of USA to hold a National Convention at such remote locations which opens up the possibility for many locations. Your faith in us has made our experience truly enjoyable and we are saddened and simultaneously enthused that we must transition to ensure Leuva Connection is always full of fresh and new ideas. For us, Shailesh Patel, Nancy Patel, and Harshad Patel, it has been our deepest pride to know that we have added value to the Leuva Connec tion magazine and humbly hope that we have increased your expectations towards new ideas and thoughts when it comes to Leuva Connection or even the LPS of USA. Moreover, we have built a strong foun dation for the new team and we are very honored and privileged that the new team, comprising of Samir Patel (TX), Manish Desai (TX), and Jayesh Lallu (AR), have asked Nancy Patel and Shailesh Patel to work with their team to help them through out this year. For us it is not a position or title that matters but a collaborative effort for the betterment of our Samaj and as a much larger team we look forward to continu ing to build on what we have started; but with new vigor and new vision to ensure that the traditions and goals of LPS are well documented and in a more fresh and appealing way. Also, it was a pleasure working under Bharat Bobby Patel’s term as he is a person who understood and worked with the entire board no matter what it took. Bobby Patel is someone who inspired and motivated the entire board and was very supportive to get things done. Yet we receive only a handful of small gestures. That’s not enough! You must become a better member, encourage your area representatives to be more responsive in making their districts better known and strive to make Leuva Connection a beacon of Leuva status in the USA. Furthermore, we would like to say that while our convention was a tremendous success, we must strive to do better. Many people were clapping and cheering with many of the speakers about learning Gu jarati, and speaking it. Three days every two years isn’t by any stretch long enough to teach anything valuable enough to stick; but all LPS can hope to do is create the spark. Only you can create, nourish and grow the fire. If kids are to become more involved within our Leuva community, then it is the responsibility of the parents to direct that young energy towards your belief path through communication and teaching of your experiences and goals for them. Respected Leuva Members, Jai Shree Krishna and Jai Swaminaryan. I hope this letter finds everyone in good health. WOW! Once again, we pulled off our National LPS of USA Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a bang. The initial decision to have the convention in New Orleans was a tough one. There were two main reasons for this: remote location and youth security. In the history of LPS of USA, we have never had a convention in an area where there is not a large society of LPS members, such as that in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville or other major cities. Louisiana has a lot of LPS members but all are scattered in different cities. Nevertheless, the volunteers of Louisiana surprised the entire nation. The LPS members of Louisiana have made a mark on the map. They have provided their courage, loyalty and hard work to our LPS Samaj. The journey to the convention was a tough one, but a successful one. A famous peace activist once said “Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it.” The volunteers are obviously both wise and virtuous. Please accept my sincere thanks for volunteering your time and effort in putting together such a grand convention. Without all of the volunteers, the convention would have not been a huge success. If we have made any mistakes or upset anyone, please accept our sincere apology. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help. We continue to witness more participation and involvement than ever before. This past c o nve n t i o n in New Orleans helped demonstrate how our yo u t h a r e stepping up el at P Dipesh K and becoming leaders. As you may have heard, the youth were represented in unprecedented numbers and were among the most active attendees at our convention. The youth committee and we were shocked at the number of youth wanting to actively participate and attend all the sessions and having over 600 youth at the convention. This was truly unique as we have never seen such activity among youth at any previous LPS conventions. We credit the LPS Board with providing the youth with forums and activities due to which they were able to attend the convention to both learn and enjoy. As most may not realize, the youth were and are very adamant about making sure they attended the functions creating havoc for the youth committee to cater to all of our youth attendees. This was an unexpected but pleasant surprise to us all. The success of the convention and planning for youth was due mostly to our youth. More importantly, their behavior during the entire convention was cordial, respectful, and graceful. Being a youth myself, this year’s convention provided the most opportunities to learn about our samaj and network with other people. There were lots of activities for the youth to attend that did not detract or distract from the convention and its goals. Furthermore, we enjoyed also being able to see friends and meet new people, which is important for our youth as they will be the next generation to uphold the family name and values. We t o o k great pleasure in seeing smiles all around with our youngsters having fun at this convention and getting involved in the samaj, thus enabling them to have a brighter Hitesh Patel future for LPS. We had several youth and other committee members give many positive comments, making the entire convention and stress of organizing, worth it. We feel it’s important to see our youth wanting to attend the conventions and enjoying their experiences because they will be the future of our samaj. The makings of a great convention Sunil Patel rounds off the many interesting activities that youth in the age group of five years to 35 years enjoyed at the annual convention… AROUND eight months ago I was given four committees to lead, for the convention. Of all my committees, the Youth Committee seemed like it would be the most challenging. The notion of having the first remote convention in the history of LPS didn’t help matters. Not to bore anyone with the behind Sunil Patel the scenes planning, let’s talk about the results. All-day activities for the age group of five to nine years included trips to the insectarium and aquarium, which saw the participation of over 75 children. Youth in the age group 10 to 17 years enjoyed listening to speakers including our own Dhansukh Dan Patel and Mukesh 14 September 2011 Mowji sharing thought-provoking, funny and engaging topics such as “Maa, Ben and Beti” and “What is Leuva.” For those in the age group of 18 to 20 years, we had dynamic speakers such as Sanjay Ram and Dr Vikas Jhingran speaking about “Community Involvement” and “Beauty of Tradition.” All rooms were standing room only and all the seminars were interactive. Lastly for youth in the age group of 21 to 35 years, we took a different approach to the traditional “matrimonial.” With Dipesh Patel, FL and Kappa Patel, LA heading this group, they also saw participation stretch beyond maximum capacity. Their focus was social and professional development in a totally relaxed atmosphere. Now let’s get to the entertainment. For the first age group we had DJ Sai (Leuva) from Houston, TX. For the second and third age groups we had DJ Rocky from Houston, TX and DJ Krush from Chicago, IL mixing it up at the House Of Blues and The Republic. These are two prominent bars in New Orleans. To top it all off we had a special appearance by Culture Shock from Canada. So for all of you who missed out, don’t let it happen again. And for all of you who came, Thank You! Now for the rest of the Thank You’s: The board for giving my team the opportunity and the budget (LoL). All the volunteers who helped with the “Little Leuva’s”. At this year’s convention, the panel discussion hosted five members within the age group of 20 to 50 years, addressing questions relating to and concerning the samaj. The purpose was to make a platform for all members of our samaj to understand as well as participate in shaping the future of LPS. Here are some the questions and their thought provoking answers. With American culture and the financial success of the first generation’s hard work, have the second and third generations lost some ‘ambition’ and ‘drive’ to succeed as a result of the luxuries and lifestyles that their parents may not have had? • Sometimes they lose drive growing up and assimilating to the western culture because they don’t have the same understanding of the struggles their parents went through • They develop drive and ambition later rather than earlier • Their drive and ambition is to achieve a lifestyle where they are comfortable There are opinions that if you are a very strict parent, your kid won’t learn how to adapt very well socially and that they will lack ‘common sense.’ On the flip side, there are opinions that if you parent too loosely, your kid won’t have discipline and values. What would you say is the essence of Hindu culture? A. The individual acceptance of religion is the real essence of Hindu culture. Since the ancient times, Indian Vedas and saints have cultivated the Hindu culture in the form of a science, as each and every aspect of it is concealed completely with a scientific approach which has a strong and convincing logic behind it. In business they now go shoulder to shoulder with men and have acquired the requisite skills to show their hidden talents to the world. Unlike men they still take up the responsibilities of bringing up children and looking after the individual needs of every family member. Q. What advice would you give women, struggling to balance their roles as a wife, mother and daughter-in-law? A. Again, it is not struggling in any way; rather it is balancing their roles in varied forms. It is the versatility of the woman that gives her strength to perform her duties for everyone. Family values, ethical behavior and crediting the surroundings become a part of this. That’s why Indians worship not only the Almighty but also everything which helps them directly or indirectly. In all these the pride of being Hindu comes first. The real ways of living life also form the essence of Hindu culture. The scientifically proved Indian culture is considered the real mirror which shows the ways to live life. Q. Is this still relevant for Indians in the US? Please explain how and why? A. Indians residing in abroad, like in the US, cannot be apart from this as this is a part of their blood. Living in another country and following the traditions or rules of that country does not mean that one leaves his or her virtues behind. Indians residing in the US love and respect their country a lot, and always wish that their next generation should know everything about the Indian culture. They continuously make efforts to pass on the essence of Hindu culture to others. We can proudly say that the Indians in the US are rather more devoted towards the Indian culture. Q. For Leuvas living in the US, how should one go about living their life? A. The Leuvas living in the US are very hard working, friendly and known for their hospitality. They have struggled a lot to make and keep their place especially in another country. They’re a very dominating community that has unity and excellent harmony within itself. As entrepreneurs they have had the courage to settle in any part of the world. As excellent businessmen, they know how to start a business, run it, establish it and take it to the peak. But I must say that they should not blindly follow the features of other cultures. Because their next generation may face problems of living in dual cultures which may harm their individual image 26 September 2011 A woman in this context should be completely devoted in her every role and perform more dedicatedly. It is the strength given by God to a woman alone, for she is considered the producer of life. This strength makes her more emotional, attached and sensitive towards everything. What do the Hindu scriptures say of women and their role in family life? A. As such, Indian women have never been undervalued. They are given equal rights and freedom just like men, although they sometimes sacrifice their other roles to fulfill their role towards society. That’s why we say ‘nari tu narayani.’ Since ancient times, Indian women have always given importance to the duties dedicated towards their family and society. This is not to be considered the devaluation of Indian women but should rather be seen as a part of traditional Hindu approach. The Hindu Vedas have very distinguishing roles for women but on the other hand they also consider them a link between religion and family values. Women are, in reality, considered the backbone of the Hindu culture as they always performed their own roles, duties and commitments not only for their family but for the society also. Women have now made their own image in the corporate business world also. For increasing this strength, they should become more spiritual and not lose their faith in God. Having trust in God will definitely give you the courage to balance yourself in all your versatile roles: be it as a mother, wife and daughter-in-law. It is due to a woman’s inner abilities that she is successful in all fields and aspects of life. Q. Daughters-in-law are in some cases not treated with equal respect in Indian families. How can this change? A. Giving and getting respect is a part and parcel of Indian culture, a culture that is influenced by complete hospitality. The relation of daughters-in-law now has changed completely, because people realize that their own daughter also plays the role of a daughter-in-law in some other family. In the ancient times there were some inequalities seen but now the trend has completely changed. Of course daughtersin-law should be respected in their families as they are the persons who give an extension to the family name in the society. People should understand this fact, that in their absence the world cannot go further. People should value and quantify them as the foremost part of the family. Q. A. Every husband should spend time with the family members and try to balance himself in social, personal and financial aspects. Shouldering the responsibility of earning and the expectation of providing better lifestyle may sometimes make him tense and more workaholic, but spending time in spiritual activities as well as having faith and trust in the Divine power will definitely assist men in creating a peaceful and happy environment in the family. Participating and assisting in the bringing up of children and child care will also create a happy atmosphere in the household. Finally, the husband should always value the sacrifice made by his wife, who has left behind her family, friends and society with a promise to accept everything expected from her husband and his family. Q. Youth in America are caught between two cultures – and both are at odds with each other. What advice would you give these youths? A. The youth of America don’t exactly suffer between two cultures but are rather trapped between them. Following the culture of the host country is of course needed but the traditional culture that is one’s own should not be overlooked. They should learn the culture of their religion and should strictly follow, albeit in their own ways. The Indian youth living in the US should not forget the roots of Indian culture with their day to day interaction with latest technology. The Indian culture, religion & spirituality should be passed on like a heritage or heirloom from the parents to their young ones. They should clearly know the distinguishing features of both cultures. Q. This often leads to conflict with parents. What should parents do to when it comes to their relationship with their children? A. The generation gap may lead to conflicts between parents and their children. However, having a religious and spiritual environment in the home may solve these problems very easily. Parents should convince and guide their children regarding the different cultures, while stressing on the importance of Indian culture and the values of our traditions. In simple words, according to me, there should be an open talk with acceptance from both the sides. Give your child ‘value education’. Education which takes into context Indian traditions, culture, virtues and spirituality. Parents should also make the children understand the difference between Eastern and Western cultures. On the one hand, the Indian culture is rich in its virtuous values, and on the other hand, the Western culture offers a luxurious lifestyle with the latest amenities. The perfect guidance given by parents will definitely help Indian children living abroad to live their lives with real Indian values blended into international lifestyle. Q. What should parents do keep our culture alive in the US? A. As parents, you are the only ones who can change the minds of your children, and walk with them on the path of culture and spirituality with traditional understanding. Some simple ways in which you can preserve your culture is by making your children believe in the Indian value system. Explain to them in depth the richness of the Indian culture. I strongly believe that spending time together and sharing a meal are the best options for making the youth aware of the essence of Indian culture. YOUTH WINS AT 2011 LPS GOLF TOUNAMENT IN NEW ORLEANS, LA. TWO YOUTH TAKE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE AT THE 2011 LPS GOLF TOURNAMENT IN NEW ORLEANS DURING THE LPA CONVENTION. The Leuva Patidar Samaj of USA (LPS) held its convention and conference in New Orleans, Louisiana July 28 thru July 30, 2011. The LPS convention was attended by over 2000 people and was a resounding success. Organizers were overwhelmed at the participation by the youth as well as the adults in the various activities planned, including the 2011 LPS Golf Tournament, which was held on July 28, 2011. The players endured a 100 degree plus day with 100 percent humidity as it rained during part of the day. The course conditions were muddy and provided no roll with much standing water. Regardless, and true to those that love the game, the participants completed a full round at First place winner of the 2011 LPS of USA Golf Tournament were Jatin D. Patel, who plays for his high school, and is from gaam Umrakh and lives in Louisiana. Second place winner of the 2011LPS of USA Golf Tournament was Avee M. Arvind, who also plays for his high school and is from gaam Kharvasa, and lives in California. The top score for the tournament, a natural 78, was Raju C. Patel, who is an avid golfer, from gaam Bajipura, and lives in California. According to Arvind Patel, a life member and one of the organizers, “this type of activity that promotes youth participation is the direction the organization should take.” Arvind also commented that “golf is fast becoming one of the top sports for our community and youth and we should continue the tradition of a golf tournament at future conventions”. The tournament showed a profit for the LPS of USA and the profit was proudly given to president Bharat “Bobby Newman” Patel at the convention.
