Hello Readers,
Season’s greetings! The holidays are here, and that means it’s time to kick back and soak in
the festive cheer.
How about some Christmas music to get you into the holiday mood? Let the Sembawang
Wind Orchestra whisk you away to a winter wonderland with their performance of popular
Christmas tunes (page 5). If you fancy some jazzed up renditions of Christmas classics, pop
in for Jazz for Curious Listeners: The Christmas Sessions, and you can even try your
own jazzy improvisations too (page 4).
Is your Christmas home decor is still lacking pizzazz? Perhaps a Christmas wreath will
spruce the place right up. Join us a hands-on session in Wreath up and ring in the jollies
and create your own handmade Christmas wreath (page 17).
Don’t miss out on our special holiday film screenings this month (pages 18 and 19).
Highlights include a double feature Christmas Movie Marathon and Christmas classic
Home Alone, about a young boy who has to fend off two burglars when his family
accidentally leaves him behind when they go on their Christmas vacation.
From all of us at the libraries, have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

SHELFIE
IRENE LIM
Irene Lim, an instructor with Genesis Stained Glass, gets lost in the kaleidoscopic world of
stained glass. She has been involved in various glass art commissions, restorations and
education in Singapore. The latest restoration project has been most rewarding – bringing to
their former glory some forty numbers of stained glass panels around hundred years old at
The Wesley Methodist Church.
My bookshelf is…
a shelf right behind my work
desk in the office.
I have... 100 books
My top three picks are...
Decorative Glass
by Nance Fyson
This book is presented with
a historical appreciation of
the role of stained glass in
architecture in the 19th and
early 20th century. The pages
take the reader through
the history and evolution of
decorative glass styles through
the times. One is inspired
by the generous illustrations
and comprehensive text. It
also includes short practical
information on repair and
restoration methods.
Kiln-formed Glass
by Brenda Griffith
The draw of the book is the
various magical projects
within. Griffith introduces us
to different methods and
techniques in kiln-forming,
guiding us through the entire
process with the final outcome
of beautiful kiln-formed
projects, inspiring all to build
on our own imagination and
creativity.

make difficult healthcare decisions for you.
You can ease their burden by voicing your
choices now. Advance Care Planning (ACP)

health. It is a series of voluntary discussions
that help you better understand your state
of health. Your preferences will be recorded
and used to guide the healthcare team and

on your behalf, in your best interests, if you
are unable to do so yourself. This talk is
conducted in both English and Mandarin.

Why was the Industrial Revolution
not born in China?
One of the most intriguing issues for historians is, “Why
did the Industrial Revolution not occur in China in the
fourteenth century?” At that time, almost every element
that economists and historians usually considered to be a
major contributing factor to the Industrial Revolution in late
eighteenth-century England also existed in China. Why did
China not take the next step? Studies seem to suggest that
it was the socio-political structure that limited the scientific
developments of China. What were the inhibiting factors?
For adults. This talk is brought to you by the Ancient
China History meet-up.

The Greatest Gift of a Generation: Life Stories
From 30 May 2015
Woodlands Regional Library
An exhibition by the Singapore Memory Project, “Greatest Gift of a Generation: Life Stories”
celebrates the quiet triumph of overcoming personal adversity. In this exhibition, we explore
the personal stories of the generation born before Singapore’s independence – people who
have experienced and witnessed great joy but also great hardship. Each individual’s story is
paired with evocative portrait photography conducted by a group of photography majors from
the School of Art, Design and Media from the Nanyang Technological University. Visitors to
the Woodlands Regional Library will be able to explore these life stories, woven through the
shelves and walls of the library.

memory showcases and resources. You will find interesting and fun information widgets on
the Media Wall, for example popular dating spots or favourite playgrounds. There are also
images of places in Jurong floating in our Memory Pool – ‘catch’ these images to discover the

Date: 5th December 2015, Saturday
Time: 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm
Venue: Woodlands Regional Library, Programme Zone
All children have the ability to learn. They learn at their own pace and
in different ways. When children are not learning in the typical way at
school, parents may find it a challenge to teach them. These children
are also at risk of social and emotional difficulties due to their learning
differences. This workshop helps parents to identify children who are at
risk of learning difficulties, apply strategies to support their children with
their learning, and provide a supportive environment for their children to
become confident learners.

REVIEW
R
obert Harris has written many
historical novels, alternating between
ancient Rome and Europe during the
Second World War. His Roman trilogy has
Marcus Tullius Cicero as the hero. The trilogy
began with Imperium, and its main theme was
the rise of a non-warrior-like Marcus Tullius
Cicero, a lawyer, orator and philosopher who
rose to become consul of Rome. Lustrum,
was next, and there Harris told a riveting
story of the famous Catiline Conspiracy to
overthrow the Roman government. The plot,
hatched by Lucius Catiline, was exposed and
thwarted by Cicero. Dictator brings the trilogy
to a close.
As consul, Cicero persuaded the Senate to
execute many of the conspirators without trial.
There were still many Catiline sympathisers
in Rome. One of them, Publius Clodius,
managed to push through a law that made
it a crime for Romans to execute Romans
without trial. Dictator begins with Cicero,
unable to challenge the new law, going into
exile, a seemingly ignoble end for a man who,
five years before, had been the most powerful
man in Rome. By the time Cicero went into
exile, the Roman Empire was under the
control of the first triumvirate – consisting of
Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompey, and Marcus
Crassus. One of Cicero’s famous sayings was
“While there is life, there is hope.”
Political intrigue ran deep in Rome, the city
that governed the vast 600-year-old empire
that stretched from Britain to the Middle East.

Coming to libraries this month
Whoever ruled Rome ruled the Empire. The
idea of a triumvir was to keep a balance of
power because, as Cicero wisely assessed,
when there are only two, sooner or later
they will turn on each other. The problem,
however, is that when there are three, there
will be politics. Clodius was supported by
Julius Caesar, so Pompey persuaded Cicero
to make peace with Caesar and have his exile
rescinded. This was done, but there was a
political price, Cicero found himself cornered
into supporting a new legislation proposed by
Pompey which angered Crassus.
The murder of an Alexandrian philosopher
named Dio sparked a series of charges
and counter-charges in which Cicero, once
again, showed his shrewd political acumen
and oratorical skills when he went in aid of
defending an accused and later, helping the
other side when the tables were turned (by
Cicero’s scheming). By that time, the intrigue
among the triumvirate increased and rumours
began to circulate that Pompey and Crassus
were planning to oust Julius Caesar and run
for co-consulship together.
Then Milo, a supporter of Cicero, killed
Clodius. Milo had also been running for
consulship and seemed to be in a good
position because he had rid Rome of the
unpopular Clodius. But Pompey countered
and brought his troops into Rome, under the
guise of restoring order so that the killers of
Clodius could be brought to trial. Cicero gave
another of his famous oratories: “No one

has greater respect for Pompey than I, but
we must be careful not to do our enemies’
work for them. To argue that to preserve our
freedoms we must suspend our freedoms,
that to safeguard elections we must cancel
elections, that to defend ourselves from
dictatorship we must appoint a dictatorwhat logic is this?”
The middle of the book is a breath-taking
account of the open warfare between the
Roman Senate and Pompey who wanted to
seize power for himself. The civil war ended
with Pompey’s death. Meanwhile, Crassus
had also died. Julius Caesar stood alone and
powerful. He manipulated an ageing Cicero
into helping him attain consulship and ruled
the Empire. But Julius Caesar was murdered
on his way to the Senate, lured there by
a trusted friend, Decimus. The struggle for
power and control over the Roman Empire
was rekindled. Mark Antony made the first
move to grab power.
Octavian, like Julius, was an ambitious man
even though he rose to power when he was
barely 19 years old. In one debate in the
Senate, Octavian was touted as the man
to be given charge of the Roman armies to
fight Mark Antony. Reservations arose many
felt that Octavian was too young to be given
so much power, fearing that he might turn
against the Senate. In a careless moment,
Cicero said, “Perhaps he will. But we can
deal with him later. He can be raised, praised,
and erased.”
Octavian eventually succeeded in pushing
Mark Antony to the brink. When two
powerful senators, Pansa and Hirtius were
mysteriously killed in the battle with Mark
Antony, the Senate appointed Decimus
to take over control of the Roman armies,
which meant that Octavian had to report
to Decimus. Lepidus was also dispatched
to ensure that Octavian had the support to
fully and finally crush Mark Antony. But no
news came back to Rome. The reason for
the eerie silence soon emerged. In one of
the most devastating accounts of treachery
and betrayal, Lepidus crossed over to Mark
Antony’s side, and the two in turn held private
discussions with Octavian. A new – the
second – triumvirate was created in which
power was shared among Octavian Caesar
(an adopted son of Julius Caesar), Mark
Antony, and Lepidus.
When Octavian returned to Rome, he met
Cicero. Warm greetings were exchanged
between the two and Octavian promised
Cicero safe passage on account of their
past friendship. But as he turned to leave,
Octavian asked Cicero, “[W]as it a joke, or
would you really have me erased?”

The Shape of the New: Four Ideas and
How They Made the Modern World
BOOK
REVIEW
T
he authors in The Shape of the New
assert that four ideas shaped the
modern world. They begin with an
illuminating exploration of Adam Smith’s
world and the impact of his book, The Wealth
of Nations as the first big idea. Free market
or not, that was the unending economics
debate in modern times, and they often
careened off into debates about capitalism
and anti-capitalism, each side striding
forward, brandishing Adam Smith’s The
Wealth of Nations in support. Chang HaJoon, for instance, reminds us in his book 23
Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism
that there is no such thing as a free market,
and reels off example after example to show
that the free market does not exist. Indeed,
the very existence of free trade agreements
is proof that there is no free market. But if
the free market was not all that Smith was
proposing, what was his big idea? The
authors write: “Smith is telling us, then, that
there is a state of perfect civil society where
personal liberty and personal industry and
personal reward work together and reflect
one another. The superior economy is the
one that approaches this ideal condition,
where each man becomes a noble atom of
self-interest, and all atoms are in a state of
righteous order and equilibrium.”
Then along comes Karl Marx, who “inveighed
against the celebration of individualism and
deprecated its fledgling democracies” which
were to him “a bourgeois fraud, designed to
solidify the power of an emerging capitalist

class”. Marxism was not just the countercapitalist idea; it was the second big idea.
But like Smith, Marx’s ideas are at once
inspiring and complex. ‘Marxism’ has been
branded in so many forms that scholars often
scream, “Will the real Marx please stand up?”
In spite of the many forms it has exhibited
and the many deaths it has endured,
Marxism is not dead and continues to
shine as a beacon.
The authors present to us a fascinating
and enriching study of Marxism and its
Communist offspring. They trace the rise
and effects of the Great Depression in
which capitalism took a big hit, driving
many capitalist countries into the arms of
fascism – Germany and Japan being the
principal examples. The outlandish versions
of Marxism by influential men like Stalin and
Mao was a major reason for its decline. Yet,
the authors write, “Marxism provided the
promise that oppression, either domestic or
foreign, would not prevail. It could be and
would be overthrown. And…the Marxist
perspective has also offered a way to be
anti-Western while at the same time justifying
the adoption of Western science and
technology”. The authors think that “Marxist
ideas remain appealing to some who need a
model for the construction of a better, fairer,
more utopian future society”. Whether that
may see success for the future of Marxism
depends on another of Marx’s beliefs – the
cyclical nature of history.
The Little Paris Bookshop

As for the third big idea, the authors turned
to Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution
by natural selection. His book, the title of
which was changed twice, finally to The
Origin of Species, was the foundation
and spark of modern science. It began as
biology but has since subsumed physics
and chemistry. The authors relate Darwin’s
struggle in the race with Alfred Russell
Wallace to publish the theory of evolution.
This chapter continues with a discussion
of the matters that make Darwin’s ideas in
the 21st century “more alive, controversial,
and capable of inspiring emotion than
ever”. They continue to be attacked from
some religious quarters and at the same
time, there is “an opposite track, finding in
Darwin ultimate explanations for all human
phenomena”. One such area is in the field of
evolutionary psychology. Getting to the mind
and the source of how we think examines
the reach of natural selection and pushes
the “precinct of science” to new frontiers.
Here the authors bring us to the possibilities
in contrast. Darwinians in Darwin’s time
argue that evolution is a phenomenon of
progress. Evolutionary psychologists argue
that we retain our Paleolithic past in our mind.
Thus, they say, “We are back to debating
yet again the nineteenth-century idea that
organic evolution and cultural evolution are
homologous.”
The fourth big idea, democracy, was shaped
by two men, in the authors’ view, namely
Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.
Hamilton was a member of the Federalist
Party, which eventually vanished and was
replaced by the Democratic Party. Jefferson
was from the Democratic-Republican Party
which had evolved into the Republican
Party. The state and nature of the American
democracy, the much vaunted model of
exportable democracy, had a fascinating
history that was carved out by the vision
and actions of the two rivals, Hamilton
and Jefferson. They had “visions of two
different Americas, not friendly to one
another”. America today is the product
of the compromise between those two
visions. Hamilton wanted ‘a strong central
authority, a large military, a federally driven
industrial economy, and an active foreign
policy. Jefferson wanted a weak center, local
militias, a nation of yeoman farmers, and
“entangling alliances with none”’.
The big ideas that have so rapidly brought
the world to modernity are challenged
by counter-enlightenment forces which
include fundamentalist religions, both from
Christianity and Islam. The authors examine
the roots of their rise and what they hope
to achieve. They examine the shared core
traits of all fundamentalists as well as their
differences. They conclude with an emphasis
on the importance of big ideas for the
continued development of civilisation.

The Crane Wife
Author: Patrick Ness
Publisher: London: Edinburgh: Canongate, 2013
E-book
George Duncan is an average middle-aged man whose life takes
a magical turn one night after he rescues an injured great white crane in
his backyard. The next day, a mysterious lady called Kumiko appears at
George’s printing shop and begins to tell him a wondrous story – one that will inexplicably
change his life and the lives of those around him forever.
Beautiful and romantic, Patrick Ness’ The Crane Wife was inspired by a classic Japanese
folktale of the same title. As with his previous work, A Monster Calls, Ness shows his ability
to suspend reality for his readers and weave fantasy into real-life issues. All in all, The Crane
Wife is a surprisingly moving tale which might just leave its readers wishing for a similar
transformation of their own as well.

Prominent sportsmen featured include swimmer Ang Peng Siong, who emphasises how
failures are crucial to attaining greater achievements; cyclist Dinah Chan, who shares the
importance of passion in order to succeed; and Bosnian-born footballer Aleksandar Duric,

and having a country to call home.
These are just three of the stories featured, but every tale offers an inspiring message that
Singaporeans can learn from and be proud of. Reading this book just goes to show that

The Story of Music: From Babylon to The Beatles:
How Music Has Shaped Civilization
Author: Howard Goodall
Publisher: New York: Pegasus Books, 2014.
Call No.: 780.9 GOO -[ART]
Many of us enjoy music. We listen to the latest songs and attend music
concerts. But what inspired humans to create it? How did music first begin?
In this fascinating work, Howard Goodall provides an account of how music came to be.
He shares how music has evolved from prehistoric to present days, as well as a summary of
musical innovations through the years.
The book also provides interesting anecdotes about music during its early stages.
For example, in Ancient Greece, there were no musical scores and people were free to
explore and perform in any way as long as it suited the occasion. It was only later on when
people realised the challenges of teaching music – and preserving it – that the concept of
musical notation was born.
This is an enjoyable read for anyone who is curious about the history of music and how it has
influenced us from past to present.

tekanan dan sering berasa senang putus asa.
Walaupun tiada satu jenis makanan yang dapat mengawal atau menyembuhkan penyakit diabetes,
pengambilan makanan yang sesuai mampu mengurangkan komplikasi. Ramai berpendapat
bahawa pemakanan hanya merangkumi pemakanan gula sahaja. Tetapi, walaupun pemakanan
gula seharusnya disekat, ini tidak bermakna makanan-makanan lain kesemuanya dapat dimakan
