MANY BONES,
What began as a small ritual of mourning has become a ceremony to honor the dead for an entire community
MANY BONES, ONE HEART
ONE HEART
“When I first observed the All Souls Procession, the jubilant, costumed participants, and the
cacophony of sounds were delightful. But it was the shrines and photographs created by folks to
honor their beloved dead that moved me to begin creating a documentary. Since 2010, I have
devoted most of my time to producing the film, in hopes of revealing the healing power of giving
creative voice to grief, aiming to portray the nourishing compassion cultivated when we share our
deepest sorrows—aSMALLWHEEL

Run Free - The True
Story of Caballo Blanco
Tucson, Arizona is home to the
All Souls Procession, a yearly
costumed parade honoring the
dead. Once small, the Procession
now hosts some 100,000
participants. The event brings
people together to share in their
sorrows by giving a creative voice
to grief. The film portrays the
regenerative power that results
from this collective cultural
tradition.
Recently diagnosed with ALS,
28 year-old Steve and his wife
Hope hit the road to see the
country, meeting musicians
Michael Franti, Garath Asher,
and Dave Matthews along the
way. As his disease progresses,
Steve struggles to find joy in an
ever-limited life. Through support
from each other, their Atlanta
community, and Facebook
followers, the couple endures.
Artist-organizers Nadia Hagen
and Paul Weir, along with
other participants, share their
experiences with planning and
participating in the Procession.
Because of the event’s popularity,
one struggle they face is
preserving the integrity of the
grassroots event by keeping it
free, peaceful, and imaginative.
