Where’s Wally?
Mr Hull bucked the trend
for Alice in Wonderland
costumes in the English
Department on WBD instead dressing as Where’s
Wally. His top fancy dress
even made the Manchester Evening News who
claimed to have found the
biggest Wally in Manchester!

World Book Day 2015
World Book Day 2015 saw the return of the BooX Factor in
the LRC with returning judge Mr France and newcomer Miss
Hilton taking to the panel. Pupils had two minutes to present a book of their choice with Vivos and chocolate eggs
up for grabs for all of the performers.
The LRC was transformed by Craft Club
into Wonderland with Mrs Farrell taking on the role of Alice and the English
department filling the rest of the roles
from Lewis Carroll’s classic novel. Mr
English got into character to host a
special Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at
lunchtime with treats on offer.
Staff around school volunteered themselves as ChatterBooks identifying
themselves with WBD badges. Their role was to discuss their favourite children's books and characters with pupils who were tasked with collecting as
many answers as possible to be entered into a prize draw.
The school was buzzing with excitement from so many events. A big thank
you to all the pupils and staff who participated and helped to organise it!

Comic Relief
Cut for cash
Art teachers Miss Lad and Miss Eccleston went to extreme lengths to
raise funds for Comic Relief having
their long hair cut clean off.
The sponsored chop took place on
the dining hall balcony with pupils
gathering below as happy volunteers
snipped at the top of their plaited
locks. Students broke into cheers
and applause as the teachers held
up their plaits whilst sporting new
bobbed cuts.
Earlier staff had also been taking
part in a sweepstake guessing the
combined length of the plaits.
Miss Lad and Miss Eccleston went
further for charity still by donating
their hair to make wigs for children
who been suffering from cancer.
Their efforts raised a staggering
£850. Well done ladies!
Pupils broke into cheers and applause as the
teachers held up their plaits
Fundraising fun
It wasn’t just the art department
raising money for Comic Relief, the
whole school got in on the action!
Red Noses were on sale throughout
the week. Mr Aiken set up a photo
booth which ran for the whole week
at lunchtimes from the LRC. Pupils
and staff couldn’t help but delve
into the fancy dress selection and
strike a pose for a donation. The
pictures were shared throughout
the week on the dining hall screen.
Mrs Brown spent the day face
painting for those willing to make
their face Funny for Money! Red
Nose nails were also on offer with
funny manicures.
Staff and pupils took part in a big
bake donating the cakes to a break
time bake sale.
Donations big and small were
gratefully received with
Change for Change collection
buckets circulating to collect
any spare change.
As a school we raised £400
and counting in addition to
the brilliant sum raised by the
hair chop!

Millbrook Primary Languages Day
Year seven girls Elinor Payne, Tamzin Streeter, Faith Stokes, Talia
Hodginson, Morgan Andrew, Sara
Teluvo and Ellie Eccles went to
Millbrook Primary in February to
help with their Languages Day.
enjoyed our time at Millbrook because we had the chance to teach
something that we are good at.
Thank you Mrs Clarke for arranging
the visit and teaching us how to
speak French!’
They worked with years 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5. They prepared and planned
their own activities and taught colours, numbers and dates in French.
The Millbrook children enjoyed the
activities and learnt a lot! We have
been asked to go back later in the
year.

Behind the scenes on the street
Five Year 11 students and Mrs Davison visited the new
ITV studios for a special tour around the
Coronation Street
set. The trip had
been kindly donated
by Mr Jennings’ sister, who had bought
it at a Charity Ball in
November.
We arrived at lunchtime when there was a break in filming and were met by
Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald). He showed us around both the outside
sets and the indoor studio. He was really informative about filming and we
were able to ask lots of questions about life as an actor. We bumped into
Jason Grimshaw and Sean Tully, and saw Gail in hair and make-up! We also
pretended to pull a pint in the Rovers!
It was a fantastic trip and we really enjoyed the experience. It was real insight into working in television.

My Career #Makeithappen inspires Copley girls
Year 9 girls have spent a morning
with inspirational career women to
learn about different professions and
rule out stereotypes between ‘male
and female’ jobs.
Around 75 girls at Copley Academy
attended the My Career
#MakeItHappen event at the school
run by housing association New
Charter Group and Inspiring Women
Awards.
Women from a variety of industries
talked to students about their careers in law, health and science, the
police, IT, accountancy and PR and
media. Women from the motor
trade and gas engineering were also
on hand to pass on their experiences.
The event aimed to inspire the girls
(age 13-14) to think about different
careers including roles that are often
associated with men. It was also
Christine Amyes, Chair of Governors
at the academy and New Charter
Group’s Executive Director of People
said ‘This is our first event like this
and we thought it was important to
inspire young women to think differently about their futures.
‘Professional women from a variety
of backgrounds talked about their
routes into their careers and challenges they may have faced along
the way. Women from different areas of the New Charter business were
also mentors on the day and we’ve
had some positive feedback from the
girls which we will be following up.’
My Career #MakeItHappen was run
to coincide with National Careers
Week (2 - 6 March) and International
Women’s Day (8 March) – a worldwide celebration of the achievements of women whilst calling for
greater equality.
A special
thank you
Year 8 pupil Luke Cain
has been sincerely
thanked by a local
resident after finding a
wedding ring that was
almost lost for good.
Thankfully, Luke spotted
the ring in Tesco
Stalybridge and handed
it in at Customer
Services and it has since
been returned to the
owner.
Mr Butterworth is
extremely grateful to
Luke for handing in his
irreplaceable ring and
visited school with a
note of thanks for Luke
and a letter to be held
on record.
The event aimed to inspire girls to think about different careers including
roles that are often associated with men
held to help the pupils make more
informed decisions about their GCSE
options which they will soon be making.
Businesswoman Jan Lord from Guide
Bridge MOT spoke about her journey
to a successful career in the motor
industry. Scientist and nutritionist
Jeannette Jackson shared her own
inspirations with the girls and how
she started her business - which has
seen her publish a book and work on
TV programmes with celebrities.

Afternoon Tea at The Hilton
On Tuesday 17th March, year 10 went on a Catering visit to The Hilton hotel
in Manchester. In preparation for their controlled assessment, they had a
special opportunity to experience the delights of Afternoon Tea.
In the dining room at the top hotel they enjoyed teas, coffees and juices and
indulged on posh sandwiches, fresh salmon and crusty bruschetta bread
capapés, scones with luxuriously thick clotted cream
and smooth, rich chocolate
tarts.
The delicious treats were
all in the name of useful
research for our year 10s
as they had to log tastes
and textures of the different food served. They
gained ideas for presentation as well as observed
how flavours complement
each other ahead of preparing their own Afternoon
Tea back at school.

Harry Potter Book Night
The LRC hosted a Harry Potter
event as part of a UK celebration of
the wizard books. The day started
with character anagrams and a Harry Potter quiz during registration.
Mr Taylor was impressed with Korrey Beard in his form who got every
single question right. The LRC were
so delighted with his enthusiasm
and knowledge of Harry Potter that
Korrey has been rewarded with a
copy of one of the books with the
brand new cover illustrations by
Jonny Duddle.
Later at lunchtime there were extract readings, a film show of the
Harry Potter characters and the 50
best moments in the films.
A great big thank you to Mr English
who dressed up as a wizard com-
plete with magic wand challenging
pupils to guess the quote. If pupils
could name the character correctly
they were treated to a chocolate
frog from his special wizard’s bag. It
was lovely to see pupils interacting
and gathering round him eager to
have a try. The whole event was
enjoyed by staff and pupils and was
a big celebration of Harry Potter.
Thank you to all the staff who
joined in during registrations and
lunchtime. It was magic!
Copley pupils gathered outside in the yard to view the eclipse at its best
Solar Eclipse
On Friday
20th
March
came a
rare opportunity
to witness
a solar
eclipse
over our
home
town.
Copley pupils gathered outside in the yard to view the eclipse at its best.
Pinhole cameras provided the chance to monitor the moon’s path as it
blocked over 90% of the light from the sun for a few minutes around
9.30am. There was a distinct chill in the air and shadow passed overhead as
the eclipse reached its maximum in Stalybridge.
Those in the Faroe Islands north of Scotland saw a total eclipse a little later.
The next total solar eclipse in the UK won’t happen until 2090.
