AMA CHARTER 1458
Hard to believe we’ve been doing the DRCS Scale Meet for 17 years now! This year’s
event was fantastic with 23 pilot entries and 44 models! We also drew our second largest
attendance after getting a couple advance publication in the QC Times. Photo coverage of the
event was much better in the Argus/Dispatch. We are lucky to have the combination of local
media to contribute to the success of our event! We are also lucky to have the contribution of our
membership who helped make the event as great as it was. Thanks to all who helped get set up
and tore down and also to all those who helped staff the event. Of particular note again this year is
the contribution of Jerry Raisbeck who acted once again in the capacity of our gate boss. All
flight operations went seamlessly in large part to his expertise in handling this job for the entire
day. Thanks Jerry! The weather was also great that day so everything went about as good as it
possibly could have. We revised the trophy classes this year to split only Giant and Sport classes.
This simplified voting as well as trophy production. Here is a listing of all the trophy winners:
Best of Show - Wendall Maakstad - B-17
Giant
Todd Davis - T6-11
Ron Gooch - Pete
Mike Kaas - Mustang
Sport
Phil Vernon - Gee Bee
Brian Utter - Zero
Jack Kester - Minnow
July is kind of a slow month for DRCS, the only scheduled event we have is a pylon race
on July 8th. Good to relax a bit after the Scale Meet. August 4th though is the Flying Weenie
Roast and night fly. There won’t be another newsletter before then so I’m covering this topic
now. The event start about 5:00 pm at Norman Frye field. Please bring a dish to share and your
own drinks. The club will furnish weenies, condiments and plastic ware. Get your night flyers
tuned up for some early season fun in the dark following the weenie roast!
We’ve been experiencing some nearly intolerable conditions so I haven’t ventured out
much to fly lately. The heat sucks all the fun out of it. If you go, be sure to take plenty of water to
stay as safe as possible until the heat breaks. Flyers also need to be more vigilant about putting
their card up on the frequency board when flying. I realize the 2.4 frequencies all work together
without interference, however, you still MUST display AMA/club credentials when ever
utilizing our club field facilities. This assures all users have the proper AMA/club membership.
Get back in the habit of putting up your card! Last Saturday when I left and picked up my card,
there were at least 5 other pilots on site and NO cards on the board except mine.
If you didn’t get enough scale flying at our meet the Cedar Rapids Skyhawks, Warbirds
over Iowa event is coming up July 21-22. Check our web site or theirs for further details.
Assuming the weather is nice this month’s meeting will be at the field, remember ALL
meeting now convene at 7:00 pm. If the weather turns sour watch for email notices on the
preceding Saturday.
I’m closing on a sad note this month. Long time member, Kelly Bryant’s wife Peggy
passed away on June 13, 2012. We send our deepest condolences to Kelly and his family during
this time of their tragic loss.
Keep the wheels down,
Phil
MINUTES OF THE 11 JUNE 2012 MEETING
The meeting was called to order at the Eastern Avenue Branch of the Davenport Library by President Phil Vernon.
There were 17 members and no guests present.
The Treasurer reported an operating balance of $1995.01.
Norman Frye Memorial Field - The ruts are back under the north end of the runway mat. Since we can't make
permanent changes to the field, it was suggested that we shorten the mat.
Scale Meet - We have a gate boss, but need more help. Mike Kaas has the prizes ready. Phil has the ballots and
will make the clothespins to mark the entries. Hy-Vee is scheduled. Tables should be set up by 8AM for
registration.
Events - The next event is on 8 July, a pylon race.
FAA Rulemaking - The FAA has delayed it's rulemaking on model aircraft.
Indications are that they still intend to do so, in spite of the Act.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30.
MINUTES OF THE 25 JUNE 2012 BOARD

Vernon at the Davenport Village Inn.

Weenie Roast - Bring your night flyers, after the weenies,
there'll be night flying.
