2012 Gala - Davenport Schools
What is “The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread?”
On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Davenport Schools Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary with a
gala/fundraiser at the Davenport Radisson Hotel. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed cocktails, a sandwich buffet
and piano music by D.J. Broyles, CHS ’98. Vocalist was North grad Justin Hall.
West High student photography was on exhibit, along with historic displays from
the Davenport Schools Museum and the Davenport Schools Foundation. Keynote
speaker was Tom Hudson, CHS ’90, who is the co-anchor for the PBS national
broadcast “Nightly Business Report.” Other speakers included DSF President Tony
Williams, DSF Chair Emeritus Lisa Arbisser, and DCSD Superintendent Art Tate.
Fourth-graders from Eisenhower Elementary offered dramatic poetry recitations to
demonstrate the excellence in our classrooms. The “Sliced Bread” theme refers to
Otto Frederick Rohwedder, left, a product of Davenport Schools, and the inventor of the bread-slicing
machine in 1928, which inspired the “greatest thing” slogan.
