STEPHEN MINISTRY
Listening,
Comforting, Caring
Under direct supervision of Fr. Mark Knestout, this is an
ongoing pastoral care ministry. St. Stephen Ministers are
members of the parish, intensely trained to care for people
who are experiencing a loss, or going through difficult times or
life transitions. Please contact: Deacon Julio Blanco-Eccleston
for assistance as a care receiver or to get involved in the
ministry. Tel: 703-821-1654; [email protected].
We have a good selection of CD’s, DVD’s, and books - CD’s and
DVD’s are only $3, books are $4 each! They can be found at
the Lighthouse display in the vestibule.
JULY 3, 2016
SOCIAL CONCERNS
The Poor Box for the month of July is for Interfaith
Housing Coalition, part of Interfaith Works. IHC
provides supported housing to homeless families. IHC
families live in one of 26 housing units scattered
throughout the County, supported by dedicated
professional case managers. When ready, families are
linked with teams of volunteer mentors through
Interfaith Works’ Friends in Action program, who give
guidance, support, and friendship as families work
towards economic independence and social stability.
Are you cleaning out your closets? Our Lady of
Lourdes on East West Highway has a homeless program
providing meals on Sunday nights and a “clothes closet”
where needy guests can obtain donated clothing? Men's
Clothing is always needed. You can bring items to Our
Lady of Lourdes school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30 PM
on Sundays and ask for location of drop off. Or you can
call
Livia
Gatti
at
301-469-6552
,
[email protected]; or Selma Deleon at 240-372
5915, [email protected] for clean clothes pick
up. Since the clothes closet is a bit hidden, we would be
happy to assist.
Bethesda House - thank you to all the volunteers for
another successful first half of the year providing
dinners for 20 men in Bethesda House. A calendar for
July to the end of the year is posted in the church
vestibule to be signed according to your availability. As
usual, three volunteers are requested for the third
Tuesday of each month. Important reminder: we are
serving dinner for 20 BIG men each time. Let’s keep this
in mind when we cook! Thanks! Carol Bergin:
[email protected], or Livia Gatti: 301-469-6552/
[email protected].
Share Mercy with People in Need - Catholic
Charities, the social service arm of the Church,
welcomes you, the Church, to share mercy by serving
people in need. Come make a difference in someone’s
life – and your own! Sign up for a one-time event or make
a bigger commitment: be a mentor to someone returning
from prison, welcome people arriving at a shelter for the
night, or help provide 1,000 people with dental care at
the Southern Maryland Mission of Mercy (clinical and
general volunteers needed for this event July 28-30 in
Waldorf). Get information and get started by visiting
www.CatholicCharitiesDC.org/volunteer.
S.O.M.E. - on June 13, S.O.M.E. neighborhood #7
(Landon, Pyle, Whittier, and Wilson) provided the midday
meal, consisting of lasagna, green beans, and bananas to
over 400 people. Many thanks to all those who
responded so generously to the request for donations
(submitted by Pauline Reeping).
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The flowers on the altar this weekend were
sponsored by the Reilly Family in honor of
Maria Reilly on the anniversary of her passing.
If you would like to sponsor flowers on the
altar in memory of loved ones, living or deceased, please
print your name, phone number, and the occasion or
loved one you wish to remember on a purple Flower
Contribution envelope, which you will find in the church
vestibule. Minimum contribution for two vases on the
main altar is between $90—100. Please drop off your
envelope in the collection basket, or call the parish
office, 301-229-7933, and your request will be posted in
the weekly bulletin. We can only honor one individual
request per weekend, so please bear in mind that,
sometimes, the date you require may already be taken.
Also, for your information, we will not be able to accept
requests for the sponsoring of flowers on specific
liturgical dates.
The parish community of St. Bartholomew
extends its deepest sympathy and prayers to
Pablo Renart and family and friends on the
death of his wife, Lucia Renart, on June 20,
2016. A Memorial Mass for Lucia was
celebrated at St Bartholomew Church on
June 24. Please keep the soul of the
deceased and her family and friends in your prayers.
St. Bart's Middle School Youth Group: we are 6th,
7th and 8th graders interested in serving our neighbor,
playing together and getting to know Our Lord Jesus
Christ! All are welcome! If you would like to learn
more
please
email:
John
&
Maria
Archer,

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Have you been considering a Catholic education but have
not enrolled your child because you couldn't afford the
tuition? Or, perhaps you are currently struggling to pay your
child’s tuition. Your child may be eligible for a scholarship as
part of a new Maryland state program that will provide $5
million in scholarships for low-income elementary and high
school students starting in the 2016-2017 school year. To be
eligible for the scholarship, your family must meet certain
household income guidelines. For more information, please
contact St. Bartholomew School at 301-229-5586 and ask for
information about the BOOST program. Deadline to apply is
July 11.
TV Mini-Series: Catholic Beginnings in Maryland - EWTN
will premiere a new 8-part mini-series on the Catholic roots of
Maryland. Shot on location in southern Maryland and featuring
several parishes of the archdiocese, Fr. Charles Connor’s
series will explore how faithful settlers and settlements
impacted the growth of Catholicism in the United States. Look
for Catholic Beginnings in Maryland, premiering on EWTN at
6:30pm ET, Sunday, July 3.
If you’re looking for a flexible volunteer opportunity and have
4-5 hours to offer each month, consider the Senior
Connection. Our volunteers serve Montgomery County seniors
who can no longer drive and need help to get to the doctor and
to shop for food, or to manage their budgets. Senior
Connection provides training and liability coverage, and
volunteers use an online ride-scheduling system to create their
own volunteer schedules. It’s convenient and easy, and makes
volunteering
completely
flexible.
Contact
[email protected] or 301-962-0820 for more
information. Offering a few rides each month to a senior
neighbor is a great way to “pay it forward”!
The Board of Directors of the Catholic Business Network
of Montgomery County invites you to its next monthly
Friday Networking Breakfast Meeting being held on Friday,
July 8, at 7:30am. This month's speaker is Susan I. Wranik,
MS, MA, CC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist, linguist,
speaker, and writer passionate about giving voice to other
people’s voices and helping them speak so others listen. She
focuses on helping men and women become stronger speakers
and better communicators. We meet on the second Friday of
every month at Timpano Italian Chophouse, located in the
Montrose Crossing Shopping Center at Rockville Pike and
Montrose Parkway. Parking is conveniently located outside the
restaurant. Please register to attend at www.cbnmc.com
3rd Annual Holy Land Festival - on Saturday, July 16, the
3rd Annual Holy Land Festival will be held from 11am-5pm at
the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, DC
(1400 Quincy St., NE). The festival highlights the culture and
life of Christians in the Holy Land with exhibits, vendors,
Mediterranean food for sale, speakers, demonstrations, and
tours of the Holy Land shrines and monastery gardens. Parking
and admission is free. In case of rain, the festival will be held
inside, and the closing Mass is at 5pm. For information and an
event schedule, please visit myfranciscan.org/holylandfestival,
or call 202-526-6800.
Right to Life of Montgomery County will be manning a prolife booth at the Montgomery County Fair, August 14-22. Any
new and interested volunteers are asked to call Tharpa
Roberts at 301-962-5611 or email her at [email protected]. If
you volunteered last year, there is no need to call (unless you
have moved) as she will be making contact with you.

DECIMOCUARTO DOMINGO ORDINARIO

firmamento.
