It Is Really All Of Us
Jake Wieseneck, Junior Boy 2007, Homework assignment
Assignment: Describe a Person who has been a significant
influence in your life. Explain how you are different from having
known him/her.
“It never rains and there are no hills” is not just one of Camp
Towanda’s many mottos. This saying also reflects the positive
attitude of Mitch Reiter, the camp’s owner and director. In my two
summers at Camp Towanda, a sleep-away camp in Honesdale,
Pennsylvania, Mitch has made a significant impact on my life.
Right from my first time meeting with him, at a barbecue for new
campers, he convinced me that camp was fun and that I should
not be scared about leaving home. His calm and caring personality
helped me relax and get excited about the next summer. Also, his
positive attitude and sense of humor convinced me that Towanda
was the right camp for me!
When I left for camp it was the first time I was going to be separated
from my family for more than one night. I was excited, but I was
also nervous. From the time I arrived in Honesdale, Mitch,
Stephanie, his wife, and the counselors all helped me to feel comfortable even walking up the big hills!
Mitch also helped me overcome one of my biggest fears in the
very first week of camp. Before my summer at Towanda, I was
scared of most dogs. On the first day, I was introduced to the
Reiter’s two dogs, Taxi, who is old and calm and Casper, who was
still a puppy and was very wild. I was so scared of Casper that
one of my counselors gave me a piggy back ride to the opening
evening activity so I could avoid running into Casper. When Mitch
heard I was scared of Casper, he helped me by showing me how
to play with him and convinced me that the dog was not dangerous.
Even when I was anxious, he calmed me down and gave me
confidence not to be afraid. In the next few weeks, I got over my
fear and I now love Casper like he was my own dog!
One of the Mitch’s best qualities is that he is always using humor
to make the campers happy and create a great environment at
Towanda. During my first year, I figured out that Mitch even
teaches the counselors to use humor to help campers with home
sickness. Mitch always knows what kids like to do and he treats
all the campers like they are his own children. This is important
because he tries to be fair to everyone and give every child a
chance to make an impact and feel important and loved. He went
out of his way to make me feel special and that really made a
difference in my camp experience and influenced my life. I realize
that I should always treat everyone fairly and that a positive
attitude and humor can help you when you are afraid or unhappy.
Because of the fun environment Mitch creates at camp, and my
desire to get into the five year club, I went back to Towanda for my
second summer. That first week of camp was full of bingo, board
games and THIRTEEN INCHES OF RAIN! Mitch never changed
our motto and planned some great activities for the kids including
bumper cars, indoor basketball and football in the rain. Even
though it rained for seven days straight, Mitch used a lot of jokes
and his positive personality to make sure camp was fun for all the
campers and the counselors. After a wet start, it turned out that
the summer was even better than my first year!
Mitch also teaches campers that everybody can give back to the
community. During the summer, everyone at Towanda participates
in a Swimathon for Morry’s Camp, which is a summer camp for
underprivileged children. It is named after a man, Morry Stein,
who dedicated his life to offering camping to children who could
not afford to pay for camp. Morry was my father’s camp director,
which makes the Swimathon special for me. By swimming forty
laps this year, I raised $80 for this charity. I felt great about my
accomplishment. Even though we spend a lot of time having fun
at camp, Mitch’s influence teaches us that we can also help other
people at the same time!

Crazy Towanda Fact
What are our official camp colors???
???
Amazingly, we seem to be quite the colorful camp… But officially, due to Olympics, we
would really say “red
red and blue
blue” .
Logo colors: yellow
yellow-blue
blue-green
green -with a hint of
Team colors: red and blue
Retro colors: brown & gold
black
Logo wear: Oddly enough, although Mitch seems to have a shirt with the logo in every hue,
his most popular color combo is green and khaki.
Hope this helps!!

The New New Jersey Reunion was excellent. The new location, Space Odyssey
proved to be a great improvement. We had our own private space, enough
room, plenty of parking, ease of food and games and an overall great flow for the
people. Those of you who attended for the first time, you have to realize how
whacky our days at SportsWorld were! I think we have found a new home… and it
was great to see everyone.
Those of you who were unable to attend, you should have received your bunk picture and DVD of
Friday Nite Flix in the mail. Any staff that would like a copy of FNF, please send Dusty an email at
[email protected]. Staff will be able to download their bunk pictures from the Media
Room in December.
The day started out with hugs and handshakes, followed by some game time and the
Best Of Friday Night Flix Highlights, which ended in a mysterious 2007 snowstorm (was
that a hint, a fakeout, a gag or was it just totally lost in the frenzy of the day?); Regardless,
after the video, it was lunchtime and gamecards…..the overnight bag room
was full…the lost & found cage was ignored for the most part and many
people left with a great feeling, good smiles and plenty of Camp Towanda
Post-it pads, pencils, pens, bumper stickers, a 2007 calendar, a bunk
picture and of course, the DVD highlights.

Advice From The Past
Dear Mitch and Stephanie,
I recently reconnected via email
bunkmate from 1994.
I had lost touch with her after
senior summer, and I thought it
she had sided with two other
thought didn’t want me to return
Dorm summer. As you know, I
back for my Dorm year.
with an old
I left camp
was because
girls who I
to camp for
didn’t come
Anyway, it's really stupid--but it was something
that kinda "haunted" me for a long time.
Amazingly one of my biggest regrets is NOT
going back to camp for Dorm summer. I know
NOW that I would have worked it out with all
my friends if I did just go back... after all,
we were just growing up!
Cover Story Continued;
Since first meeting Mitch, I feel I have grown up a lot. I am more
independent and I am willing to try new experiences on my own.
I am able to spend seven weeks away from my family and I am
less afraid of dogs and other animals. Mitch helped to bring me
into the Towanda family and now I understand that all people
should be treated fairly and that people can be different and still
be a part of a group or community. When I meet someone who
is different, I accept their differences and treat them the same as
everyone else.
Finally, Mitch has taught me that being funny and positive is so
important to making the lives of all the people you speak to a
little bit better. I now believe that humor conquers everything
and I am certain that wherever Mitch Reiter is “it never rains and
there are no hills” !
Note From Mitch: Okay first, because of Weeze’s essay, The
Junior Boys will get a special late night pizza party! Seriously,
Stephanie and I are constantly reminded by our wonderful campers
and staff that Towanda is an unique and special place that is
very rewarding for all of us. We are proud to have the opportunity
to help make a positive difference. Thanks, Weeze!
It seems so strange to still even talk about it
after all these years as something I regret.
But if you ever have a camper who tells you
they don't want to come back to camp
because of a spat with their friends---you just
send them my way. I'll set them straight!!
So I am happy to say I have reconnected with
my friend and feel really good about it all. I
really thought that she was part of what I
thought was the "treatment" I was getting
from my other friends. But she was really my
friend all along.
Phew!! How's that for gossip!! I love camp…
it really is a special place and time.
Love, Libby Cobb
(should have been Dorm 1995)!
