LE VOYAGE
A NANTES...
In 2011, our city of Art and History emerges
fitted with new flagship facilities whereas
in 2012, this rich cultural heritage will embark upon a more enriched journey and
truly… out of the common !
Go out Gare Sud side to enjoy a first viewpoint on the Canal Saint-Félix and on
this peaceful little marina, sheltered from
the tumult of the Loire river. A first unusual
vision: trees growing in some of the boats ! A
proposal from Fabrice Hyber, a reflection on
the place of nature and of its mutations.
A few meters away, you can see the coloured
and richly decorated dome of the LU Tower.
Keep it in focus: this is le lieu unique, your
next destination. By pushing open the door
of these old Lefèvre-Utile biscuit factories,
discover the most atypical national stage in
France. You will have access to plenty of
opportunities: enjoy a drink at the bar, stop at
the bookshop, visit the contemporary art
exhibition in the Courtyard, that used to
house the production workshops of La Paille
d’Or, relax in the hammam or enjoy a first
view over Nantes from the top of its Tower.
After leaving, cross the canal, under this
bridge, the water looks still but if you come
back by nightfall, you’ll get an unusual sight
thanks to Nymphéa, an artwork by Ange
Leccia, belonging to the cultural tour Estuaire
Nantes <> Saint-Nazaire. A young woman, a
nymph or a mermaid, quietly moving in an
aquatic environment: the creature seems to
be imprisoned by the tunnel, her body seems
to disappear in the inhospitable narrow passage. The light of the projection plays on the
moving surface of the water, a quite perceptible homage to Claude Monet’s painting
experiments. This water sprite is personified
by Laetitia Casta, a worshipped icon of our
society, that has become here a mythical and
contemporary nymph.
Then go back towards the cours Saint-Pierre
and push open the door of the Chapelle de
l’Oratoire. This beautiful desecrated building,
with a wooden arch evoking the hull of a
ship, is an annex of the Musée des BeauxArts (Fine Arts museum) and houses temporary exhibitions.
Right in front the St Peter ’s and St Paul’s Cathedral, whose construction lasted 457 years,
is standing in front of your eyes. Fall under
the spell of the clarity of this monument,
remarkable for a number of reasons, from its
flamboyant gothic style, to its arches higher
than those of Notre-Dame-de-Paris (37,5 m),
or to the masterpieces confined in its naves…
A few steps away, while the cobblestones
foretell the medieval district, cross over the
drawbridge of the Château des ducs de
Bretagne (the castle of the Dukes of Britanny)
and discover Duchesse Anne’s residence.
Fully restored, this fortified castle confines all
the architectural refinement of the court of
Britanny. It is the opportunity to visit the
musée d’histoire de Nantes (museum of the
History of Nantes) with the very contemporary
scenography, or, from the battlements, ask
“Anne whether she can see anything coming”.
Then lose yourself in the pedestrian streets of
the Bouffay district. Depending on your
course, you can go past timbered houses, the
remains of an old Renaissance chimney on
the side of a building, the metal belfry with a
— 02 —
crown of angels blowing the trumpet at the
four cardinal points of Eglise Sainte-Croix
(the Sainte-Croix church). A crossroads, an
area to stroll, to go shopping, the district
swarms with a permanent crowd and at night
changes into a festive spot.
While crossing the Cours-des-50-otages to
reach « the other city centre » – the one of the
Quartier Graslin (Graslin district), named
after its developer, that even if it was hit by
the bombings of the last global conflict, it
remains one of the finest example of urban
planning of the XVIIIth and the XIXth centuries
– first look up to the Tour de Bretagne… And
who knows, the boldest ones will be able to
enjoy a 360° view on the urban community
of Nantes, perched on the 32nd floor, 150
meters above the floor of the inhabitants of
Nantes.
Come back down to earth for a shopping « à
la nantaise » by crossing the Place Royale
whose fountain is reminiscent of the fact that
Nantes is a city on a river, then walk up the
stairs of the Passage Pommeraye, this shopping arcade dating back from the XIXth
century: there are very few cities in Europe
that can boast of having a covered passage
with such an architectural value. This peace
have inspired more than one artist, from
Jacques Demy, the filmmaker (Lola, Une
Chambre en ville), to Tardi, the cartoonist
(L’Histoire du soldat inconnu). It results in the
Crébillon street where you can « Crébillonate » among the chic boutiques.
Les quais de Nantes
... a new cultural offer that positions Nantes
as the inevitable destination of urban tourism...
Up this street, enjoy a gourmet break at La
Cigale, this Modern Style brasserie, registered
historical monument, offers at any time of the
day a XXth century decorum as a lunch setting.
The view from the terrace is also well worth a
visit with a breathtaking view on the corinthian columns of the Graslin Opera House.
Open to the public, you will probably hear the
lyrical outbursts of a diva or of an orchestra.
The musical notes ring out as far as the peaceful alley of the Cours Cambronne. The twin
buildings running alongside this public
square throw them back at each other
mischievously. All of this doesn’t seem to
bother the General, who, determined, gazing
when he says: « the Guard dies but does not
surrender ». Make a detour via the Natural
History museum, one of the most important
in France in the number of specimens.
Make your way to the Quai de la Fosse
through the small alleyways where, in former
times, sailors used to enjoy themselves before
sailing back to faraway lands.
In this part of the city that opens up on the
harbour, our slave-trading past resonates. You
can share our work of collective memory by
visiting the Mémorial à l’abolition de l’esclavage (Memorial museum dedicated to the
Abolition of slavery) built by the artist Krzystof
Wodiczko and the architect Julian Bonder.
Cross the Loire river via the Anne de Bretagne
bridge and leaning on the railing, take a
moment to dream about the ocean (it’s not far
from here !)… You can now discover the new
district of the Île de Nantes. Completely overhauled for a few years, an urban planning
programme on an amazingly large scale and
focused on energy has been developed there,
where culture and creation are mixing with
the port, the industrial and the maritime
heritage.
First of all stay in the realms of dreams and
of the ocean, straddling one the animals of
Les Machines de l’île and of the Carrousel
des Mondes Marins (Merry-go-round of
Marine Worlds). Why not going towards the
Station Prouvé by Elephant ? This prototype
of a service station created in the sixties by the
architect Jean Prouvé changes at night into a
magic lantern, as an invitation to a still journey and to a discovery of the artworks
through an open air tour of Estuaire Nantes
<> Saint-Nazaire.
Along the Loire River, compare yourself to the
yellow Titan crane, discover the various
viewpoints offered by Les Anneaux by Daniel
Buren, Estuaire’s emblematic artwork. Continue to the Hangar à bananes restored into a
succession of bars and of restaurants with
their own various but original universe for a
deserved break. The sight on Trentemoult, on
the estuary, and on the Chantenay district,
will make you really want to go for a stroll
there… This works out great, each of these
area offers new facets that are essential for
your trip in Nantes !
Retrace your steps to discover more thoroughly the contemporary architecture and
this changing area. Behind the naves of the
Elephant, La Fabrique appears suddenly, the
new pole for contemporary music and digital
art. Accross the street, and if it is dark, the artwork De temps en temps by François Morellet
extends over 8 000 m2 of facade: red neons
— 03 –
(sun), white (clouds) or blue (rain) will forecast
with certainty the weather in four hours.
While on the other side of the river you can
the Memorial stretching out, walk along the
contemporary architectures signed by the
greatest architects of our time and more particularly the Courthouse designed by Jean
Nouvel, the Maison de l’avocat (Counsel
house), or again the incredible Manny building (from the nickname of the mammoth in
the movie “the Ice age”) of the Nantes agency
Tetrarc to which two artworks of Estuaire are
reacting with, to the new school of architecture of Nantes of Lacaton et Vassal. From its
terrace, its a new breathtaking vista that you
will discover and for those who’d rather take a
break, the peculiar sculpture and snack-bar
L’Absence designd by Atelier Van Lieshout is
waiting for you !
To finish off your visit, the district of the
Feydeau Island links the Memorial to the
Château des ducs de Bretagne thanks to a new
heritage tour. Of the word « island », this area
today only bears the name (around twenty
years were necessary for its filling) but the
buildings of the wealthy families of shipowners, put up on a sandy ground, have ignored
these changes: they are leaning, creating a
very peculiar optical effect ! Trimmed with
mascarons (the head of animal, man or
woman placed on facades), equipped with
wrought iron balconies, these residences
illustrate with their pomp the whole dimension of this commercial past. You can also
visit the exhibition at the Temple du goût, a
typical building dating back from the beginning of the XVIIIth century Baroque in style.
Les Machines de l’île – Île de Nantes
In 2012, culture turns
Nantes upside down !
You thought you knew the westernmost
urban centre in Europe ?
The metropole is one of the major cultural, artistic and creative pole in France but you haven’t seen anything yet…
Château des ducs de Bretagne, lieu unique, Nantes-Angers Opera house, the Hangar à bananes exhibition place,
The Machines de l’île, the Memorial museum dedicated to the Abolition of slavery, the open-air museum of Estuaire,
La Fabrique, the festivals, the heritage… Le Voyage à Nantes would like to make you discover this scattered monument
in one single tour that makes of Nantes a sought-after destination, as a city of art and culture.

The Abolition of Slavery
Memorial Museum (free admission)
Designed by the internationally renowned artist Krzystof Wodiczko
and by the architect Julian Bonder, this memorial museum was
conceived as an urban, a political and an art project. On a revegetated
esplanade, 2 000 commemorative plaques recall the slave trade shippings that started from Nantes as well as the major trading posts in
Africa and in America. A contemplative trail, punctuated with quotes
in every language, of all times and all places, becomes part of the Loire
waterfront, at the very spot where the slave ships used to berth. Both
underground so as to evoke the holds of these dying places and also
aerial to open the debate, this piece is unique in France. What a strange
feeling to wander under this waterfront at the same level of the Loire
River in a luminous atmosphere and a particular soundscape.
Visiting Nantes in the days
of shipowners and The Abolition
of Slavery Memorial Museum

In Nantes, we face the past to try to build the future in a better way… This
visit that will lead you to this great stone ship that is the Feydeau district
to the Abolition of Slavery Memorial Museum will allow you to find out
how Nantes has developed and enriched via a triangular trade between
the most important French port at the time, the Guinean coasts and the
West Indies. Once an island in the city, the Feydeau district stands as the
witness to this period where shipowners used to form veritable dynasties. Discover the courtyards of their buildings, the stairs with a stone
arch, the wrought iron of the finely worked balconies, the stone
mascarons with the heads of seamen and of the Gods of winds and
seas… The Memorial Museum will give to the visitors the keys to the understanding of this transatlantic slave trade that made 11 million prisoners.

Le Carrousel des Mondes Marins
Les Machines de l’île
Le Carrousel des Mondes Marins
Le lieu unique and its district
A team of builders, of craftsmen and of artists, led by François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice, settled its workshop in the Naves of the old
shipyards of Nantes. Their imagination explore the treetops, the
savannah or the seabeds. A bestiary of living machines are escaping
from the workshop…
At the very same spot where the big ships were built, at the crossroads
of the « invented worlds » of Jules Verne, of the mechanical universe
of Leonardo da Vinci and of Nantes’ industrial history, these monumental structures are for all an invitation to dream and to travel.
Discover the Merry-go-round of the Marine worlds, a genuine
360-degree panoramic theatre, that will receive the audience during
the summer 2012 in an amazing urban sculpture dedicated to the sea.
In the Marine Worlds, you will be the spectator of these strange and
disturbing marine creatures that will move in a huge room built on
three levels. You’ll discover the sea in all its states, from the seabeds,
the abyss to the surface of the oceans.
The name of this atypical national stage is not only an allusion to its
history, the one of the old Lefèvre-Utile biscuit factory where the
famous Petit-Beurre used to be made. That too, is not a misleading
advertising, this place being so peculiar. Visit the temporary exhibition
or stop at the bookshop, enjoy a drink in a deckchair on the terrace
before enjoying the sunset on the city from the belvedere with its
gyrorama. A unique place with multiple choices…
This Nantes’ sweet madness ! An area loaded with popular and industrial history whose rehabilitations reflects the contemporary architecture that is continuously developing in Nantes.

Jules Verne, the city is a novel
Other discovery days
The native city of one of the most translated writer in the world still
arouses our imagination and our dreams. Departing point of extraordinary trips and destination place of deep-sea expeditions, the city
of Nantes has kept this spirit of curiosity, adventure and of exoticism.
Nantes harbours a rich and tumultuous history, which successively
made of the city a port open to the outside world, a spearhead of the
shipbuilding industry or an inspiring place for the surrealist artists.
To further develop into a theme in particular, these discovery days
offer to explore the city with an expert guide.
Nantes in the days of shipowners
Bring back to life the pomps of the XVIIIth century and these wealthy
times in Nantes. The economy of the city was essentially based on the
port activities and on trade. Discreetly called « ebony », the trafficking in
human beings partook of the unprecedented development of the city
and made of Nantes the most important slave-trading port in France.
In a privileged fashion, get inside the courtyards of the shipowners’
buildings, to the stairs with their stone arch that bear witness to this
prosperous time and find out about the history of these strange
mascarons and wrought ironed balconies. The tour ends with The
Abolition of Slavery Memorial Museum, a unique artwork by the
internationally renowned artist Krzystof Wodiczko.
Programme :
10 am: Nantes History museum, (Château des ducs de Bretagne) with
a visit of rooms 11 and 17 dedicated to slave trade.
12 am: Lunch on the Feydeau district
2 am: Visit of Nantes in the XVIIIth century and of the Abolition of

Le Voyage
à Nantes in 3 days:
a suggestion
for a stay
To excite your palate, start this day with the
Talensac market. Standing as a true institution in Nantes, this morning and daily meeting (except on Mondays) is inevitable. Taste
the local specialties: buckwheat galette with
salted butter, oysters, curé nantais cheese,
garden products, greengrocers… A mixture of
tastes, of smells and of colourful characters.
On saturday mornings, you can also go to
the Petite Hollande market, more popular
and focused on world’s products.
A few steps away, the Abolition of Slavery
Memorial Museum, a monument unique in
the world built on the waterfront of the Loire
river. Built as a meditative trail, this work of
the artist Krzysztof Wodiczko touches people’s conscience and encourages thought.
Sail away and meet in Trentemoult thanks to
the Navibus, the Nantes Vaporetto. This former fishing village is a real postcard: coloured
facades, charming alleyways and a fabulous
view in the Loire estuary. A gentle way of life
will gradually reach you as soon as you have
lunch in this old open air café called La Civelle.
At the edge of the waterfront, confront the
inexorable flying of time with Le Pendule,
an artwork of the Estuaire tour, signed Roman
Signer.
DAy 1
You will go back in time by striding the historical parts of the city of Nantes. Each stone
tells the tumultuous and fascinating story of
this city, as much about its connection to Britanny as its opening up to the outside world.
The opportunity to visit the cathedral and
the masterpiece confined in it, the Château
des ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of
Britanny) will disclose the secrets of the city
through its museum with a contemporary
scenography. Continue your visit with the
temporary exhibition and a viewpoint from
the top of the battlements.
Lunch break ? Many typical restaurants are
waiting for you. Strolling in the Bouffay district: timbered houses, remains of an old
Renaissance chimney, belfry with a crown of
angels of the Sainte-Croix Church.
A shopping escapade. There is a proper
expression for this activity, appreciated by the
inhabitants of the city: “to crebillonate”, from
the name of the street (Crébillon) connecting
the Place Royale to the Place Graslin. Not far
from there, you’ll be able to continue your
window shopping session in the Pommeraye
passage, gallery enjoyed by surrealist artists
and filmmakers. In front of the Graslin opera
House, our suggestion for dinner: La Cigale,
Modern Style brasserie registered historical
monument that offers at any time of the day
a XXth century decorum as a lunch setting.
In the afternoon, go back to the north bank
for a new adventure with the Great Elephant,
the Machines gallery and the Merry-goround of the Marine Worlds.
Walk along waterfront up to the edge of
the Île de Nantes district: heritage of the
shipyard industry, artworks, contemporary
architectures redesign this changing area.
The last building, the Hangar à bananes
rehabilitated in various eating places, also
offers an exhibition place for contemporary art.

To finish off this day enriched with discoveries and with maritime emotions in a beautiful way, enter le lieu unique. This former

Go on a fascinating trip at the heart of art between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire along the
60km of the Loire estuary that connects
these two cities. This treasure was entrusted
to artists who bring this territory to light by
creating contemporary artworks of exceptional magnitude, fun and stunning! In SaintNazaire harbour, you can stroll around this
fortification, climb up to the roof to enjoy the
view and find the viewpoint on Felice
Varini’s artwork or Gilles Clément’s Jardin
du Tiers-Paysage. Visit the Life’s exhibition.
Stop by at Escal’Atlantic ! Unique in Europe,
this site is based on some of the few prestigious liners built in Saint-Nazaire and that
recreates on an area of 3 500 m2 the spaces,
the atmospheres, the luxury and the excesses
of these legendary steamships and great
liners. It gives a perfect illusion and the visitor
becomes a passenger just for the duration of
an imaginary cruise. Atmosphere, atmosphere: choose your cabin, breathe up the
ocean breeze on the promenade deck,
immerse into the heat and the sound of the
engine room, enjoy a cocktail at the bar…

under the watchful of Monsieur Hulot on the
mythical beach of Saint-Marc-sur-mer !

Nantes also offers a particularly extensive
range of unusual accommodations: Choose
a universe that matches with your personality, from the wisest to the craziest!
The apartments “a place on your own” (Un
Coin chez soi) are created around particular
themes such as: Captain Némo’s shed, greed,
childhood memories, playtime, a villa
conceived for a hamster… With Estuaire,
these rooms are designed by artists that will
take you to discover the estuary: the Villa
Cheminée by the artist Tatzu Nishi confronts
the iron castle that is the thermal power plant
in Cordemais and offers an outstanding view
on the Loire river while in the Pé castle in
Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau, six bedrooms entrusted to six artist couples who will open
their universe to you. Still in Nantes, find the
place you long for between a houseboat
along the Erdre river, a transformed workshop, or an unconventional flat in the most
beautiful gallery in Nantes that is the Pommeraye passage.

Opening of the Radisson Blu Nantes
hotel: October 2012
A novelty and an event because this is the
first time in Europe that a former Courtyard
will be transformed into an international
4-star hotel.
The Radisson Blu Nantes hotel will meet upscale customer expectations with:
– 142 rooms of which 20 are suites.
– an around 200 m² restaurant set in the
former Assizes Court trial room.
– spacious lobby in the waiting room, a bar
and a banquet hall will complete these spaces.
– a 219 m² spa-fitness room
– a 350 m² cultural space on the ground floor,
Contrary to many other great French cities,
Nantes cuisine is not typically characterized
through emblematic recipes.
Of course, we will always have a respectful
thought for Clémence Lefeuvre and her
white butter sauce and we will always treat
ourselves to a good Gâteau Nantais… but the
cuisine “à la nantaise” is something else.
Our cuisine is characterized by a singular
spirit linked to its history, its geographical
location and the figures that had an impact
on it. This spirit is the one of the opening to
the world, of multiculturalism, of curiosity, of
travelling… This is without a doubt because
Nantes is at a crossroads between the sea and
the land, between the sweet and the savoury,
the world of plants and the world of animals,
between Britanny, Vendée and the Loire river.
And also because Nantes, with its port tradition, has been enriched by the flavours of the
world that the explorers and the navigators
— 19 —
have brought back over the centuries.
Above all, the cuisine in Nantes remains at
the service of the local product because it is
plentiful in its variety and in its quality. So,
many chefs in Nantes serve this delicious
material to sublimate it, to put it together, to
associate it and in that way to renew everyday
a culinary repertoire always moving, but that
never forgets the main thing which is taste.
Things to know:
The savoury flavours of the Pays Nantais:
Vegetables (lamb’s lettuce, carrots, leeks..)
Seafood (crabs, scampis, oysters, mussels…)
Fish (sardine, sea bass…) fish from the Loire
river (pike, pike perch, eel, elver…)
Cheese (curé nantais, mâchecoulais..)
The sweet flavours of the Pays Nantais:
BN or LU biscuits,berlingot sweets,rigolettes
and caramels with salty butter, fouace and
Gâteau Nantais, chocolate, nantillais…
The Muscadet sur Lie
At the beginning of the century, our wine makers were used to keeping the best barrel of the
crop to celebrate the important family events.
Stored without racking, this “wedding barrel”
gave the wine a special character: they were
more refreshing in the mouth and their bouquet was more structured. The Muscadet « sur
Lie » wines were just born. This is all about a
natural technique, unique in the world.
For more specific request, we can advise you
with our choice of restaurants famous for
their cuisine, for their hospitality and their
setting.
