Welcome to 2015 Ballarat Cabaret Festival,
Australia’s only regional festival dedicated to the art of
cabaret as we return for our fourth year. Representing
the best in cabaret from around the country, the 2015
Festival takes a great leap forward. This year we
feature our first ever international artists. Performing
the sensual music of the Tango, these wonderful
artists come to us from Argentina, the home of the
music and dance phenomenon. You can find all the
details on pages 8 - 9.
The Festival opens with the now traditional gala
on Tuesday 6 October and runs through to
Sunday 11 October. We are also thrilled to bring
back Caravan Burlesque to “Rock the ‘Rat” with
four high-energy performances in the Ballaarat
Mining Exchange, sumptuously decorated to
welcome you. But the fun doesn’t stop there.
With the Archibald Prize running at the Art Gallery of
Ballarat until November, the Festival continues to play
each weekend with an exciting selection of portraitbased shows from a range of exhilarating artists. Full
details of the Archibald Cabaret Portraits Series can
be found from page 31.

Ballarats reputation as a city alive with cultural
diversity. I just love our city and after a cold winter I

celebrated musician and actor, Rob Mills.
Despite proving himself in the world of pop music,
television and music theatre, Rob has amassed

Astor Piazzolla is Tango’s foremost emissary to the
world and Argentina’s greatest cultural export.
This towering musical visionary has taken tango
to its limits.
Incorporating jazz and classical forms, Piazzolla
enriched and revolutionised its concepts, creating a
transcendent musical expression called ‘New Tango’.
Alicia Rappoport brilliantly supported by Gabriel
Fernández on the traditional Bandoneón, combines
radiant vocal expression with arresting soul, drama
and movement.

Comparing Argentinian soprano Alicia Rappoport
to France’s beloved little sparrow, Edith Piaf, is by
no means a stretch of the imagination.
Rappoport vividly evokes the passion of her native
Argentina’s iconic music through the powerful
resonance and soulfulness of her voice. Like Piaf,
Rappoport’s magnetic stage presence draws you
into the emotional drama and message of the music.
Forbidden Tango is a trip through an Argentina
when tango was prohibited by the rampant fear and
suspicion it inspired in every one of the dictatorships
that have governed the country.

to police encounters, chicken nuggets in your bra,
hijacking buskers and everything in between - after
this ride all that can be certain is you’re not going
to work in the morning.

numbers, These Things Take Wine is a cheerfully
tipsy celebration of wine, inebriated hi-jinx and

It’s nerdy. It’s pun-filled. It might just make you

Zulya and the Children of the Underground is set
to intrigue and transport Cabaret audiences
with smouldering vocals and superb accordion,
trumpets, guitar, double bass, percussion and
visual projections.
A unique selection of fairy tales and riddles
inspired by lead singer Zulya’s heritage is set to
music in an exquisite arrangement of Tatar and
Russian sounds and realised in a performance that
is nuanced and transformative.

More Than a Sentimental Bloke
John Derum

The Bloke is a hundred not out! The immortal
musings of Bill the Sentimental Bloke about his
girl Doreen, his mate Ginger Mick and the ups and
downs of life have never been out of print since they
were published by poet and journalist C.J. Dennis in
September 1915.
In this theatrical presentation, actor John Derum
takes us on his journey of discovery of Dennis’s life,
performing some of the many gems of this comic
genius.

VOX with Bronwyn Blaiklock

Pianist, composer, musicologist, inventor, sexual
experimenter — Percy Grainger is one of the
most original and creative figures in Australia’s
cultural history. A child prodigy, he was to develop
a sensational international career as a concert
pianist, but he also followed his interests in
collecting and arranging folk tunes, as well as
composing original pieces.
Join classical vocal ensemble VOX and pianist
Bronwyn Blaiklock as they tell the story of the life
and career of this remarkable Australian in music
and song.

Exquisitely performed by Michaela Burger with
Greg Wain on guitar and directed by Shona Benson,
Exposing Edith is PIAF… her life, loves, soul and
songs… as never seen before.
Showcasing many favourites including La Vie en
Rose, Padam and Rien de Rien alongside lesser
known gems, Burger interlinks touching stories
while seamlessly playing the part of Edith, her halfsister Momone and various famous lovers.
Burger has been dubbed Australia’s very own
“Little Sparrow”! With a voice of ‘uncanny
beauty’ she sings many of the songs in French
and being only 2cm taller than Piaf, and dressed
in her trademark black, she bears an uncanny
resemblance to the legendary French star.
Celebrating 100 years since Piaf’s birth, this is an
unforgettable portrait not to be missed.
